Kota Kinabalu: State Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib praised the successful implementation of a groundbreaking digital healthcare project at Tuaran and Beluran Hospitals. He said the initiative, a collaborative effort between the Ministry, Allyssa Certification Sdn Bhd, MQuest Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), had fully digitised critical hospital workflows, resulting in enhanced efficiency and improved patient care. James highlighted the project's significant achievements, including the complete integration of digital platforms across key departments, the transition from paper-based to digital systems for crucial processes like triage and clinical encounters, and the implementation of real-time dashboards for informed decision-making. He emphasised the project's success in integrating laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy modules with the Hospital Information System (HIS), and the deployment of AI-enabled tools to support clinical decision-making. The Minister underscored the project's positive impact on improving healthcare access for remote and underserved communities, accelerating data-driven state-level health policy decisions, and enhancing the efficiency and transparency of healthcare resource allocation. He called the initiative a 'low-risk, high-impact transformation' with the potential to set a new benchmark for smarter healthcare delivery in the region. 'The successful completion of the Proof of Concept (PoC) at Tuaran and Beluran Hospitals positions them as pioneers in digital healthcare within Sabah, paving the way for the development of a future-proof, autonomous digital healthcare ecosystem tailored to the unique needs of the state,' James affirmed his ministry's commitment to supporting the full implementation of this transformative initiative. The project aligns with the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025, promoting digitalisation for regional economic growth and resilience.

Tackling avoidable blindness

Held at Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (Thoneh), the event featured free eye screenings too. There were also public education activities to promote early detection and improve access to eyecare for underprivileged communities. The carnival was launched by Health (research and technical support) Ministry deputy director-general Datuk Dr Nor Fariza Ngah, Thoneh chairman Tengku Tan Sri Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar and chief executive officer Datuk Michael Goh. Dr Nor Fariza said early intervention was important to address avoidable blindness and reduce long-term health burden. 'Good vision is more than a health issue, it is a gateway to opportunity and independence,' she said. 'Early detection and timely treatment can reduce the risk of irreversible vision loss. The event was held at the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital. 'This is why screening is so important as many patients do not realise they are losing sight until it is too late,' she added. The event was held in collaboration with Hospital Ampang, Hospital Serdang and Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang. Tengku Azlan said the effort symbolised what could be achieved through strong public-private collaboration. 'Our commitment to outreach and preventive care is ongoing as this is more than a one-off initiative. 'We believe eyecare should not be a luxury, but a basic right. 'Our work continues through long-term outreach efforts,' he added. Tengku Azlan said the public and private sectors came together at this event with a common purpose. 'Our commitment to outreach and preventive care is ongoing,' he assured. Goh said that beyond the carnival, efforts to reach rural and remote communities continued through mobile eye clinics, which have delivered essential services to populations lacking access to specialised care. 'Through our mobile eye clinics, we have traveled to rural and remote communities to provide essential eye care to those who cannot travel to us. 'We plan to expand these services with innovations like teleophthalmology, so that every Malaysian has access to quality vision care regardless of location.' Goh said free eye screenings and education campaigns would continue to be delivered through Thoneh's outreach programmes in collaboration with public hospitals and community clinics nationwide.

Sabah Agro-Industrial Park enters new phase with agro-pharma firms

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Agro-Industrial Park (Saip) has entered a new phase of development with two leading companies, Callabio Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and Sanomedical Asiapac Sdn Bhd, officially commencing operations at the high-tech facilities in Kimanis. Callabio Manufacturing Sdn Bhd will operate the Herbal Processing Facility (HPF) and Product Manufacturing Facility (PLF), producing nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, herbal-based food products, and isotonic drinks. Meanwhile, Sanomedical Asiapac Sdn Bhd will manage the Cosmetic Laboratory, focusing on the manufacturing of medical and healthcare products. The lease agreements between Saip Sdn Bhd and the two companies were signed by Saip Directors Datuk James Wong and Datuk Dr Ramzah Dambul. Callabio was represented by its Chief Executive Officer Dr Shahir Suhaimi, while Sanomedical was represented by its General Manager Helgah Veronica Smith Lagadan. Both companies committed deposits of RM125,000 and RM100,000 respectively to begin operations at Saip. Present at the signing ceremony was the Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship who is also the Chairman of Saip Sdn Bhd Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. He said this development aligns with the State Government's goal to position Saip as an incubation hub for local agro-industry and biotechnology entrepreneurs. 'Saip is more than just an industrial park, it is a platform for talent development, innovation, and high-value manufacturing that will propel Sabah forward in the agro-biotech sector,' Phoong said. During the event, CAIQ Biosecurity Sdn Bhd also presented a proposal for a joint venture with Saip to establish the industrial park as a key centre for testing, inspection and registration of food, supplements, agricultural, and aquaculture products from Sabah for export to China.
