MoS unveils new biotech innovations, opens country's first animal stem cell biobank
Hyderabad: Union minister of state (Independent) for science and technology Dr Jitendra Singh on Saturday unveiled new technologies developed by city-based National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), under the department of biotechnology's Biotechnology Research Innovation Council (BRIC) and inaugurated India's first animal stem cell biobank, a facility to store and preserve high-quality stem cells from various animal species, at its facility at Gachibowli. The biobank would provide quality-controlled animal stem cells and indigenous, cost-effective cell culture media to veterinary clinics, research institutions, hospitals, and industry. This first-of-its-kind resource would accelerate advances in veterinary medicine, regenerative therapies, and animal cell-based smart protein production, reducing dependence on imports and fostering the country's biomanufacturing capacity. "These field-ready and affordable innovations will improve animal health, increase livestock productivity, and protect farmers' livelihoods," Singh said, adding, "They will also strengthen our ability to combat zoonotic diseases, which cause nearly two-thirds of new and emerging infections globally, including Covid-19." Nation's first animal stem cell biobank inaugurated at NIAB
Union Minister of State for Science & Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated the nation's first 'Animal Stem Cell Biobank', a state-of-the-art facility that will store and preserve high-quality stem cells from various animal species, at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), a premier institute under the Department of Biotechnology's Biotechnology Research Innovation Council (BRIC), in the city on Saturday. The Minister also unveiled a set of five breakthrough technologies developed by NIAB for protecting animal health and safeguarding farmer livelihoods like BruDIVA – diagnostic test that distinguishes between animals infected with brucellosis and those vaccinated to track and control the disease more effectively. Udder Care: An affordable, field-friendly kit for early detection of mastitis, a common udder infection in dairy cattle which reduces milk production and quality. CureCheck: A portable device for rapid antibiotic sensitivity testing in livestock infections such as mastitis providing results in under two hours. Toxo Antibody Rapid Test:A simple, on-the-spot test for detecting toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease affecting both humans and animals causing abortions and stillbirths in livestock. RapiChex JE NS1 Test: A rapid, point-of-care diagnostic kit for Japanese Encephalitis, a mosquito-borne viral disease affecting humans and animals. Dr. Singh praised the NIAB research team and said that field-ready and affordable innovations will play a crucial role in improving animal health, increasing livestock productivity, and securing farmers' livelihoods. Besides, such advances also strengthen India's ability to combat zoonotic diseases, illnesses that spread from animals to humans and account for nearly two-thirds of new and emerging diseases globally, including COVID-19. Director General of BRIC and DBT secretary Rajesh S. Gokhale noted that knowledge-driven livestock production and the sustainable use of livestock as a biological resource form a key pillar of India's growing bioeconomy. He commended NIAB director Dr. G. Taru Sharma for steering farmer-focused innovations that bridge cutting-edge science with field-level impact. The Animal Stem Cell Biobank, developed in partnership with HiMedia Laboratories, will provide quality-controlled animal stem cells and indigenous, cost-effective cell culture media to veterinary clinics, research institutions, hospitals, and industry, he said. He also laid the foundation stone for a new hostel and residential block on the institute's campus to support its growing scientific community, said a press release.

India's 1st animal stem cell biobank, lab to boost regenerative medicine & therapies for livestock
New Delhi: India on Saturday got the first animal stem cell biobank and animal stem cell laboratory that will focus on regenerative medicine and therapies for livestock. Inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the biobank and lab is situated at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Hyderabad. The cutting-edge facility of Animal BioBank is spread over 9,300 sq ft and has been constructed at a cost of RS 1.85 crore. The laboratory is equipped with a stem cell culture unit, 3D bioprinter, bacterial culture lab, cryostorage, autoclave rooms, advanced air handling systems, and uninterrupted power backup. It will advance research in disease modelling, tissue engineering, and reproductive biotechnology. With support from the National Biopharma Mission (NBM) of DBT–BIRAC, the facility will be expanded to enable biobanking of animal stem cells and their derivatives. 'We had such facilities for human stem cells, but hardly any for animal cells. The best of NIAB, and the best of Indian biotechnology, is yet to come,' Singh said, adding that these facilities will contribute "to making India future-ready". 'We will not lag behind when the next industrial revolution—driven by biotechnology—takes over. The economy will shift from manufacturing to regenerative and genetic processes, and India has already initiated this transition,' he added. The Minister also laid the foundation stone of a new hostel block and Type-IV quarters at NIAB, approved by the Department of Biotechnology at a total cost of Rs 19.98 crore. The infrastructure will cater to the needs of research scholars, faculty, and staff, fostering a vibrant academic and innovation ecosystem. In addition, Singh launched innovative veterinary diagnostic tools designed to revolutionise animal health management and support the 'One Health' approach. These include a field-deployable, DIVA-capable diagnostic kit for early and accurate detection of Brucella species; a cost-effective on-site diagnostic assay for subclinical and clinical mastitis in dairy cattle; a portable antimicrobial sensitivity testing device providing results within two hours to promote responsible antibiotic use; a sensitive and specific test for Toxoplasma gondii infection in animals; an indigenously developed rapid strip for large-scale surveillance of Japanese Encephalitis in animals and humans. 'These innovations will boost agriculture-linked GDP, enhance livestock productivity, and pave the way for an 'Evergreen Revolution' in the animal husbandry sector,' the Minister emphasised. On the agricultural front, 'these releases mark a new phase of animal-based agricultural productivity -- an 'Evergreen Revolution'. With 18 per cent of GDP from agriculture and 60 per cent of our workforce depending on it, innovations in veterinary health will have a transformative impact,' he said. 'One rupee spent on agricultural research yields a return of Rs 13, and linking industry partners from day one ensures these technologies reach the ground,' Singh added.
