Bike theft a problem of 'epidemic proportions,' Winnipeg councillor says
Social Sharing Some Winnipeg residents say there needs to be more places where they can safely stow their bikes, as a local councillor is calling for the city to explore ways to curb theft. Nearly 3,000 bikes are stolen every year in Winnipeg, according to the city. It's challenging for owners to recover them even if they know where they are. Coun. Markus Chambers, chair of the Winnipeg Police Board, said Thursday it's a problem of "epidemic proportions," and that all of the relevant city departments need to get together to come up with a strategy to address the issue. "Whether it's a combination of building bike lockers, whether it's revisiting the bike bait program where … if an individual steals that, they're immediately arrested," he said. "But again, what we have to do is figure out a way of curbing the amount of bike thefts." Cyclists at The Forks Thursday told CBC News they would like to see infrastructure that would make stealing more difficult, such as bike lockers and more racks. Some like Ken Beckett say they've learned the hard way not to leave their bikes unattended. "We've had bike thefts in the past," he said. "You get it stolen once, then you get closer to your bike after that." WATCH | Winnipeg bike advocates say city needs to crack down on 'rampant' theft: Beckett's wife, Barb Schwartz, said additional security measures would encourage them to spend more time in the area. "If there was a more secure place, I think then we could actually go inside and eat at other restaurants," she said. "Now, we just maybe do takeout and sit outside all the time." The Forks says more than 100,000 cyclists have visited the market at the historic downtown Winnipeg site so far this year. A bike valet was added last summer to help reduce thefts as part of a 10-week pilot project, but The Forks said not enough people were actually using it. "We couldn't really justify keeping it," said communications and marketing manager Blair Malazdrewich. "We have decided to try to bring them back on the busier days. For example, this year we did it on Canada Day, and sadly even then people didn't really utilize it." Malazdrewich said The Forks is always looking to improve safety measures at the site. He said there are still plenty of bike racks as well as security staff patrolling the area.
