India must nail the conditions to do well in England: Former cricketers
New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) Former Indian cricketers on Monday advised the Shubman-Gill led side to ace the conditions in England for a successful tour while Michael Vaughan believes that the five-Test series could be a start of "something special" for the visitors. India are going through a transitional phase following retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and spin ace Ravichandran Ashwin, while fast bowler Mohammed Shami was not picked in the touring party. Cheteshwar Pujara said each and every player will have to contribute for the team to come up trumps. "India's team to England must adapt quickly and play (according) to the conditions. As someone who understands batting in English conditions and team dynamics, I believe discipline, patience and support for each other are crucial," said Pujara. "Every player will need to contribute and respect the challenges that lay ahead. I am sure this tour will be a great opportunity for the growth and success of each player and the team as a whole," Pujara told Sony Sports, the official broadcaster of India's tour to England. Former left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra also echoed the same sentiment. "To me, England tour is always challenging but it's great fun as well. Adapting to the conditions will be the key and I am sure our players are capable of doing that. Bowling wise we have the experience and stability." Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan said the sooner Indians adapt, the better it is for them. "India's new squad faces a tough challenge in England, but as an all-rounder, I know adaptability is key. Gill's leadership, Pant's energy, and India's young talent must step up. "England's conditions test every skill — swing, seam, and temperament. If India's players adapt quickly and stay united, they can surprise England, just as we've seen in the past with new teams rising to the occasion," he said. Could be start of something special for India ============================ India are starting a new era under the leadership of Gill and Vaughan, who led England to many memorable Test wins, said appointing the 25-year-old as their Test captain was a "bold move" and it could be a defining tour for them. "Well, it's official — Shubman Gill is the new face of Indian Test cricket, stepping up as captain for the England series. It's a bold move, trusting a young leader with a new-look team after the retirements of giants like Rohit and Kohli," Vaughan said. "Gill has got plenty to prove, especially away from home, but he has shown (that) he has got the temperament for big moments. With Rishabh Pant as his deputy and a squad hungry to make their mark, this England tour could be the start of something special for India's next generation. Don't be surprised if these youngsters rise to the occasion," he added.

IND vs ENG: 'Don't be surprised if ... ' - Ex-England captain makes big statement on Shubman Gill after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli retirements
Shubman Gill (AFP Photo) NEW DELHI: Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that naming 25-year-old Shubman Gill as India's new Test captain is a 'bold move' following the sudden retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from red-ball cricket. Gill will lead India in their first assignment of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle — a five-match series against England beginning June 20 in Leeds. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain. With Rohit and Kohli stepping away from the longest format, the responsibility of anchoring India's batting line-up now falls on the shoulders of Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal , KL Rahul, and Pant. India's home season: Kolkata, Delhi swap Tests against West Indies and South Africa
Kolkata's Eden Gardens and Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium will swap their allocated Test matches against West Indies and South Africa respectively during India's upcoming home season, the BCCI announced on Monday (June 9, 2025). While Delhi was set to host the opening Test against South Africa from November 14-18, it will now host the second Test against West Indies starting October 10. Though the BCCI release doesn't state the reason for the venue swap, it is understood that air pollution levels in mid-November in the National Capital Region become a health hazard like it happened during a Test match against Sri Lanka few years back. The Sri Lankan fielders were wearing masks and a few reportedly suffered from breathing problems. It is understood that BCCI's Cricket Operations team collated the AQI data over the past few years and decided that venue swap is a viable option. India's home season starts with two WTC Tests against West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, followed by the Delhi Test. India then play a full three format series against South Africa starting with two Tests, followed by three ODIs and five T20 Internationals across various Indian venues. While Kolkata hosts the opening Test against the Proteas, Guwahati's Barsapara Stadium will become the latest Test venue as the second Test will be played from November 22 to 26. The ODIs will be held at Ranchi (November 30), Raipur (December 3) and Visakhapatnam (December 6). The five T20Is will be held at Cuttack (December 9), New Chandigarh (December 11), Dharamsala (December 14), Lucknow (December 17) and Ahmedabad (December 19). Meanwhile Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has expressed its inability to host the women's ODI series against Australia starting September 14, which was supposed to serve as a pre-cursor to the 50-over World Cup starting September 30. The first two matches of the series will now be played in Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) and the third match in New Delhi. Men's A series vs Australia and South Africa The fringe players in Indian men's team set-up will have their hands full with BCCI hosting both Australia A and South Africa A for four 'unofficial Tests' and six List A games. Both the touring sides will play two 'Tests' and three List A games each. Australia A series will happen in Lucknow and Kanpur while Bengaluru's COE will host the Proteas A team for the 'unofficial Tests'. Rajkot will host three ODIs. Australia A Tests will be in Lucknow from September 16-19 and 23-26 giving chance to the Test specialists to get into groove for the West Indies games. Ditto for SA A series, which will be a shadow tour before the main event.
