The FIDE Women's Chess World Cup resumed action on Wednesday after the players enjoyed a break in the 'Free Day' on Tuesday. And among the players standing out in Game 1 of the fourth round was India's Divya Deshmukh, who has one foot in the quarter-finals after her stunning victory over Chinese Grandmaster Zhu Jiner in Batumi, Georgia.
The 19-year-old International Master had a 0-5 record against the Chinese second-seed, including three defeats in the Classical format. The poor record against Zhu become was something of a mental block for Deshmukh heading into the opening game of Round 4 on Wednesday, but she managed to overcome it by focusing on 'playing the pieces' and not the opponent.

'Actually I expected it to be worse. It's good to know that it's just 5-1. I didn't have any specific preparations. Since I had a bad score, I guess there was some sort of a mental block. But, I just tried to think that I'm playing against the pieces, so it doesn't really matter who I'm against,' Deshmukh said in an interview with FIDE after her stunning victory over Zhu in 49 moves.
'Once the game began, it didn't matter who I was playing against. I think I also got a favourable opening and the position was quite comfortable,' she added.

Deshmukh sets sights on 2-0 against Chinese second-seed Zhu
The second Classical game of the fourth round takes place on Thursday with the tie-breaks set to take place on Friday in case two players finish level on scores. And Deshmukh has made it clear that she has a 2-0 on her mind against her opponent, ranked sixth on the latest FIDE Women's Classical ratings – 12 places above her.
'I guess it's a normal game. I don't think it's anything special, but of course I have to give my best and see how it goes. It will be pretty great if I can score 2-0 right?' Deshmukh added.
Besides Deshmukh, Zhu's compatriots GM Lie Tingjie, Song Yuxin and Tan Zhongyi won their opening games while playing as white. Each of the remaining Indians in the tournament – GMs Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli and R Vaishali – collected draws.

AIFF Breaks Silence On Xavi Hernandez, Pep Guardiola's 'Applications For India Coach'

A day after its top official claimed that World Cup-winning Spanish great Xavi Hernandez was among the applicants for India football coach's position, the All India Football Federation said that the e-mail received in his name was found to be "not genuine" and three others have been short-listed for the job. The AIFF did not reveal the names in the pruned list but it is widely believed that Khalid Jamil, currently the head coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, is the front-runner for the post left vacant by Spaniard Manolo Marquez. "The AIFF received an e-mail furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the e-mail applications were not genuine," AIFF stated in a media release. One of its officials, on conditions of anonymity, had stated on Friday that the application of Xavi could not be processed as the AIFF did not have resources to hire his services. The IM Vijayan-headed Technical Committee, it is learnt, has also kept Englishman Stephen Constantine, who has previously coached India, and Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic in the short-list. Constantine has coached the Indian team in two phases earlier, while Tarkovic is the most decorated among the shortlisted candidates having managed Slovakia during the 2020 Euro Championship, where his team beat a fancied Poland which had Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski in its ranks. "Following comprehensive discussions and a rigorous selection process, 10 candidates were selected for the committee to review, following which, the TC shortlisted three," the release also stated. "Given the immediate needs of the national team, it is advisable to recommend three coaches from the short-listed pool for final consideration," former India skipper Vijayan was quoted as saying in the release. "Other prominent applicants, many of whom are highly qualified international coaches, will be taken into account for long-term strategic roles in the future," he added. National Team Director Subrata Paul, also a former India skipper, spoke about preference being given to those with some understanding of Indian football. "It is a very important moment for Indian football, and we are committed to appointing a coach who not only brings technical expertise but also understands the unique style, culture, and dynamics of Indian and Asian football. "We believe such a coach will be able to connect with our players quickly and effectively," Paul stated.

‘Tendulkar's debut was before I was born' Joe Root talks about chasing Sachin's run-record and playing one Test with Indian legend

Joe Root went past Ricky Ponting and is now second on the highest run getters list, 2512 runs short of Sachin Tendulkar. But he has said that he will not focus on beating Tendulkar's Test run-scoring record during the rest of his career. He now has 13,409 Test runs and surpassed Ponting with his 120th run in England's first innings. Earlier in the knock he also went past Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis. This is his 157th Test, Tendulkar played 200 Tests. Root made his debut in a Test in Nagpur in 2012 when Tendulkar played for India and Root looked back at that series and experience of playing with the Indian legend. 'It was huge. He made his Test debut before I was born. And to be playing on the same ground as him to get a chance to play against him was incredibly cool. Someone you grew up watching, admiring, and trying to learn from him – to be on the same field watching him go about through that whole series. To get the reception he would get when India would lose a wicket was bizarre. It was quite a memorable experience, I will never forget to play that series with him,' Root told BBC Sport. Is he thinking about breaking Tendulkar's record? 'It's not something I would focus on. Those sort of things should look after themselves. The focus has to be about winning games, setting them up if we're earlier on in the Test match and if we need to chase something down, figuring out how to play that situation well. 'It might sound a little bit boring and methodical, but ultimately that's what I need to do to help England win and that's why we play the game. 'It was a great day for batting first and foremost. It was really quite cool to experience the whole ground standing like that for you is a really nice feeling. At the same time you have a job to do – a huge moment within a big series. That's ultimately what you play for – set games up or chase scores to get teams across the line. It [crowd's reaction] was obviously very touching but there is a bigger fish to fry,' Root said. Root also spoke about going past Ponting. 'I saw Ricky Ponting this morning. Ricky's someone that I grew up admiring, watching, trying to emulate, copy in the garden and at my local club – trying to play the pull shot that he's obviously world famous for. So even just to be spoken about in the same sentence as those guys [Ponting and Tendulkar], the people that you grew up wanting to emulate and pretending to be is pretty cool.'
