Lewis Hamilton Shouts Out Kimi Antonelli After Stunning Mercedes Lap in Miami Sprint Qualifying

Yahoo03-05-2025

Even after a disappointing P7 finish in Sprint Qualifying, Lewis Hamilton took a moment to celebrate a rising star—his Mercedes successor, Kimi Antonelli. The 18-year-old Italian stunned the paddock by clinching pole position for the Miami Grand Prix Sprint, becoming the youngest driver in F1 history to achieve pole in any format. Antonelli's lap of 1:26.482 edged out McLaren's Oscar Piastri by just 0.045 seconds.
Hamilton, now racing for Ferrari, shared his excitement on Instagram, posting, 'Amazing lap, Kimi[Antonelli], so happy for you guys[Mercedes]!" It was a classy nod to the teenager who moved into his former seat at Mercedes this season.

Antonelli's pole is not only a personal milestone but also a significant moment for Mercedes as they have been struggling to perform. The achievement is even more impressive considering the young Italian's limited experience in F1, having joined the Silver Arrows in 2025.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff praised the young driver's progress, emphasizing the significance of the achievement regardless of it being a sprint pole.

Wolff elaborated on the team's decision to integrate Antonelli directly into Mercedes bypassing a preparatory year at another team, as many had suggested. 'We were willing to take that risk even if it meant mistakes. And now we're being rewarded for our courage. We always said there would be mistakes. But he's kept developing steadily and hasn't made those errors, though they will come at some point. But the mileage he's put in is now paying off, and that's what's allowing him to perform at this level.'

Reflecting on Antonelli's rapid ascent, Wolff added, 'This young guy – just a few years ago, he was standing next to me in the garage, eyes wide, taking it all in. It feels like that was only yesterday. And now, the speed he's showing is incredible. He doesn't even know the track yet, this was the next big step. It may only be a 'mini pole', but you've got to take it when it comes.'
As the F1 world turns its attention to the Sprint race, all eyes will be on Antonelli to see if he can convert his historic pole into a strong finish. For Hamilton, the moment serves as a passing of the torch, celebrating the next generation of talent poised to make their mark on the sport.

Formula 1 sponsorship revenue over $2B in 2024, closing on NFL

Formula 1 is hot on the tail of the big dog of professional sports marketing, the NFL, and cleared $2.04 billion in sponsorship revenue in 2024. SponsorUnited, which tracks sponsorship and advertising takes across sports, had F1 and its teams behind only the NFL at $2.5 billion in total sponsorship revenue. The total advertising spend for F1 in 2025 is on course to exceed $2.5 billion, according to Ampere Analysis. But major U.S. sponsors such as American Express and IBM still are flowing in with the circuit catapulting in popularity off the success of Netflix series "Drive to Survive" while thriving under the control of Liberty Media. F1 tops the NBA, MLB and NHL and its racing teams each accounted for more than $6 million, according to the report, which breaks down the airbox and sidepod ad placement cost at more than $5 million for the most popular drivers on the circuit. Tops among individual sponsor agreements with F1 is the 10-year, $1 billion pact with luxury conglomerate LVMH, which holds a portfolio anchored by TAG Heuer, Louis Vuitton and Hennessy. The largest sponsor for any F1 team is the Williams contract with Australian software corporation Atlassian valued at a reported $25 million to $30 million per year. On the NFL side, the most significant singular sponsorship commitment is with Pepsi. That contract is worth a reported $2 billion over 10 years for exclusive rights at all NFL events and use of the league's trademark in advertising. With F1, Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren are the highest earners in the sponsorship category. Car and driver technology accounts for nearly $500 million in partner income for the 10 teams, according to the report. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Formula E's Miami E-Prix returns in 2026 with a new site — Hard Rock Stadium

FIA's Formula E electric car racing series will run its 2026 Miami E-Prix at the same site as FIA's Formula 1 runs its Miami Grand Prix — the Miami International Autodrome at Hard Rock Stadium. The Formula E event on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, won't use the same 3.36-mile (5.41 kilometers) track used for the annual F1 race, rather one of four shorter configurations. Unlike the F1 course and accompanying event fuss, none of the four options will affect access roads to or from Florida's Turnpike. Nor will it alter life at the nearby Miami Dolphins facility, on the chance the Dolphins are still playing. The Formula E event falls six days after the AFC Championship Game and during the Pro Bowl weekend between Championship Sunday and the Super Bowl. This will be the third venue in three Miami E-Prixs. In the series initial season, 2015, the event — practice, qualifying, race all in one day — ran on a downtown Miami course that included Biscayne Boulevard and the then-AmericanAirlines Arena. This year's return to Miami-Dade, despite scant local promotion and media coverage, drew 18,000 to 20,000 to Homestead-Miami Speedway. For comparison, that beat at least two days of qualifying and racing during March's NASCAR weekend at Homestead. And, there's a permanent road circuit at Homestead. But, Formula E prefers life on those downtown streets or at least closer than 35 miles (Homestead-Miami Speedway to the Freedom Tower) or 63 miles (Homestead-Miami Speedway to downtown Fort Lauderdale). 'It's a bit far from the city center, which is not what Formula E is about,' Formula E co-founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo said Monday. 'We like to be as close to the city as possible. We have always liked to say, 'We're bringing motorsport to the people' not the other way around, to have to get in your car and drive for one and a half hours to get there.' Longo felt that solid crowd got swallowed by Homestead's massive grandstands, saying 'If you saw that when we were racing in Paris, it would be amazing because the grandstands would be full.' Also, 'the cars are going to look way better at [Hard Rock] than Homestead.'

Imola F1 Circuit Releases Statement After 2026 Calendar Exit

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. With the growing global demand to host Formula One races, the sport decided to drop Italy's iconic Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola from the 2026 calendar to make way for Madrid. With the number of Grands Prix in a year capped at 24, F1 faces a challenging task to retain historic circuits while introducing new venues from across the world. While a plan for rotational circuits is on the cards, the absence of Imola from the 2026 calendar raised eyebrows. Now, Imola Mayor Marco Panieri has issued a statement, revealing that the announcement was not a surprise, and hopes that the circuit will be included in the calendar in the future. He said: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands driving the (1) Oracle Red Bull Racing RB21 leads Oscar Piastri of Australia driving the (81) McLaren MCL39 Mercedes George Russell of Great Britain driving the (63) Mercedes AMG Petronas... More"The provisional calendar of the Formula 1 Grand Prix for the 2026 season has been announced, from which Imola is excluded. "This is news that we were aware of and that understandably generates questions, disappointment and a sense of bitterness on the outside, because in recent years our territory has proven to be able to host an extraordinary event with record numbers. "In fact, the Grand Prix in Imola was one of the most loved and appreciated by fans and drivers, as was also forcefully demonstrated in the days following the event, and its uniqueness in the world was evident: that of uniting the race on the track with the surrounding territory, starting from a historic center to be experienced. "However, we want to be very clear: this news is by no means the final word. For the Region and the territory, the path undertaken by Imola and the Gran Premio del Made in Italy e dell'Emilia-Romagna does not end here. "We are and were aware of the complexity of the dynamics linked to the calendar and the picture was very complicated from the beginning. The contract signed in 2021 – which few believed possible at the time – envisaged the stable return of the Gran Premio to Imola until 2025. "As the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of Imola, among the promoting partners, we have truly done everything that could be done in this phase." The statement also confirmed that funds were allotted for the 2026 season to make up for the Grand Prix in 2023 that was cancelled due to floods. The mayor added: "Furthermore, the territory, as the Emilia-Romagna Region and as the Municipality of Imola / Consorzio territoriale had confirmed its availability for over a year and allocated the necessary resources in the budget also for 2026, as had been requested by the other institutional and sporting partners after the commitment made to recover next year the missed 2023 edition due to the dramatic flood events. "This territory, when it makes a commitment, is used to respecting it and being ready when needed: as in 2020, when, in a world blocked by COVID, the Imola circuit made itself available to help a Formula 1 in difficulty. "However, this is not the time for controversy, buck-passing and resignation. Now is the time for everyone to take responsibility and resume discussions for a return to the calendar. This is why in recent days, since May 26, we have asked the Government and the sports authority for an Institutional Round Table to precisely examine the terms and methods of support and joint work to bring the Formula 1 Grand Prix back to Imola. "To those who live and love Imola, Emilia-Romagna and this Grand Prix, we say that in a moment in which it would be easy to give in to useless polemics and disappointment, it is instead the time for tenacity and increasingly constructive commitment from everyone. The game does not end here and up until now we have done things that only a few years ago seemed impossible. "We continue to believe in it, with conviction and clarity, with the pride of a territory that, together with other institutional partners, has demonstrated its ability to dream big and concretely build opportunities." It remains to be seen if Imola will find a spot on the F1 calendar in 2027.
