Ryan family in the dark about show detailing life of notorious gangster
Gerry Ryan's son Rex has shied away from sharing details about his upcoming stage role as Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch from his siblings, sister Bonnie has revealed.
The eldest child of the late RTÉ broadcaster is set to direct and star in a play based on the veteran criminal's life at Ryan's Glass Mask Theatre in Bestseller Café on Dawson Street next month.
'The Monk', a one-man show, takes place entirely in the holding cell of the Special Criminal Court, five minutes before Hutch is set to receive the verdict of his 2022 trial at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin, where he stood accused of murdering David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in February 2016.

But the Ryans have no idea what to expect when it comes to the 65-minute drama – having to wait until June 10 to see their brother transform into The Monk on opening night.
'We actually really know nothing at all about it. It's going to be a total surprise,' Rex's younger sister Bonnie Ryan tells the Sunday World.
'He's been working really hard on it and I've no doubt that it's going to be amazing.
Rex initially got his blessing after a half-hour video call with Hutch from Wheatfield Prison back in 2022, organised by Hutch's son Jason.
Speaking to the Irish Independent this month, the 35-year-old explained how he sought permission to tell The Monk's story on stage.
'
He told me to do what I like and that if it was my fiction, and not his, I could go ahead. 'I don't give a bo***x, Rex.''

He met Hutch at Glass Mask Theatre last year around the time of Hutch's Dáil election bid
'I asked him loads of factual questions and probed him about his first memory, his childhood,' Rex detailed.
This meeting, paired together with research from 'multiple other sources' – including Hutch's appearance on the Crime World podcast last November – helped him piece together the story of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch.
Rex is now finally ready to play one of Ireland's most polarising figures on stage.
'The Monk' will take place at the Glass Mask Theatre on Dawson Street from June 10 to 21.

Zemeckis claimed: "We almost always called him Marty. We thought it was silly, but we figured if it helped him do his job, it was harmless. Inside Dr Tony Holohan's 'second chance' at love with Ciara Cronin

Dr Tony Holohan and partner Ciara Cronin are headed for the chapel in the next few days, but what do we know about the former Chief Medical Officer's 'second chance' at love? Dr Holohan and yoga teacher Ciara Cronin have been together since 2023, some two and a half years following the passing of his wife, Emer Feely. As the pair prepare to head down the aisle, here's everything we know about Dr Holohan's 'second chance' at love. Ciara Cronin and Tony Holohan as seen on The Meaning of Life. Pic: RTÉ Both Dr Holohan and Ms Cronin were previously married, with the former CMO's first wife, Emer, passing away from multiple myeloma, a form of cancer, in February 2021. The pair met when they were both in medical school, with Tony just 19 years old at the time. Emer went on to become a specialist in public health medicine. The couple had two children together, Clodagh and Ronan. Ciara had also been married before, meeting her ex-husband, Michael Ryan, when he attended one of her yoga classes. For years, they ran the Yoga Room in Ballsbridge together. Opening up about the relationship in 2013, Ciara told the Irish Independent: 'We see a lot of each other on a daily basis but have a flexible schedule, so we can share childcare and spend more time together with Soilse [Michael's son], which is really important. 'But flexibility at work also means that it spills over into our home, and we often have to really try to create clear boundaries in order to give our relationship and family time more attention and space.' She added: 'So, no talking shop at the dinner table or late at night — of course, yoga is a way of life and it is important to us both to work on staying mindful and compassionate with each other.' Dr Holohan and Ms Cronin have been dating for two years now, with the happy couple now set for the aisle in the next few days. Dr Holohan first revealed his new relationship when he spoke to Joe Duffy on an episode of The Meaning of Life, which aired on RTÉ 1 in October 2023. 'I have met somebody new,' he revealed, 'I have a new partner for the last number of months in my life, which is wonderful.' Pic: Justin Farrelly Asked if he was nervous about the new relationship, he responded: 'Nervous isn't quite the word, but it was a significant thing to find the basis for moving on and Ciara, Ciara Cronin is her name, has made that easier and it has been lovely, very enjoyable and we have had enjoyable new times together.' He added that meeting another family for just the second time in his life was 'kind of strange and lovely all at the same time.' Fortunately, it was smooth sailing with Dr Holohan confirming that Ciara had been 'very well accepted' into his immediate family as well as the wider family. It comes as Dr Holohan shared a selfie alongside Ciara at Dun Laoghaire as he revealed they were just days away from their nuptials. 'One week to go to our big day — I'm so happy that Ciara and I will spend the rest of our lives together,' the author wrote. Friends and followers took to the comments, with one writing: 'Huge congratulations,' and another adding: 'Wishing you both every happiness you both deserve this.' A third commented: 'Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness together. Congratulations Dr Holohan and your new bride Ciara.'

Love Island needs to stop casting influencers and 20-year-olds – we know why they're on there and it undermines the show

WE'RE about to jump head first into another long hot summer, brimming with bikinis, fire pit chats and cringe new slogans, with the sultry tones of Iain Stirling's 'tonight… on Love Island' wafting through our living rooms. And while that might spark excitement for diehard fans like me, there's also a creeping sense of deja vu - because once again, despite vocal feedback from viewers, we're getting the same recycled formula: a villa Advertisement 7 We're about to jump head first into another long hot summer, brimming with bikinis, fire pit chats and cringe new slogans Credit: Instagram 7 Many of this year's Islanders have sizeable social followings Credit: instagram/sophirelee 7 Olivia and Alex were a success story - but an Insta following wasn't a guarantee on their series Credit: Rex This year's summer Love Island cast is a who's who of social media stars. There's from Sophie Lee's popular Instagram account, Helena Ford's travel diaries, and TikTok personalities Megan Forte Clarke and Aaron Buckett. Megan Moore and Rose Selway also boast impressive followings - the latter rubbing shoulders with Love Island alum, thanks to her celeb-favourite tweakment clinic. And then there are the 20-year-old's among the cast, who are apparently 'looking for love,' on the show. Now I'm not saying you can't fall in love and meet 'the one' at 20 - Olivia Bowen was just 22 when she met her now-husband Alex Bowen, and Love Island superstars But things were different then. Love Island wasn't a guaranteed career launchpad. A deal with PLT was a bonus, not a certainty. Advertisement Read More on Love Island Now, those going on the show have seen the roadmap to fame paved before them, and enter the villa with eyes on the prize - and the prize is not love. Frankly, there really aren't enough success stories to say that casting 20-year-olds on the show is a winning formula. In fact, Love Island is more likely to move to Canvey Island at this rate, than it is to find a couple of 20-year-olds who put all their eggs in each other's baskets. So doesn't it feel a bit odd that we're all sat, every night from 9-10pm, investing all our time into people who, let's face it, are on the show to further their followings, and not to recreate a storyline out of a Nicholas Sparks novel? Would it not be more rewarding to watch people in their 30s, - those who may be genuinely starting to question if love is still out there- given a real shot at finding their someone? It would surely make the show a lot more relatable for a lot of people, instead of seeing influencers sling one-liners at each other on a Balinese bed, before heading into the outside world to land a situationship and a podcast deal. Advertisement Most read in Love Island And nostalgia for the old Love Island is running high on social media. Viewers seem keen to bring it back to the days of construction workers and fishmongers walking onto our screens, not people who are friends of a friend with an Islander, or have famous football star dads and brand deals lined up. Love Island 2025 cast revealed as footballer, actress and beauty influencer who cheated death sign up But let's be honest, you can hardly blame the 20-year-olds and influencers for going on to the show. Of course, given half the chance, they're going to want to further their careers on the UK's biggest dating output. You'd take one look at Molly-Mae's business empire and flashy mansion, Still, it's starting to undermine what Love Island was originally about. It's less of a search for soulmates, and more a talent pipeline for the next PrettyLittleThing ambassador or social media star, as opposed to sourcing the UK's most enviable romance story. Love Island winners - where they are now EVERY year Love Island opens its doors to more sexy Islanders who are hoping for a holiday romance that could turn into more. STATUS: Still together. 2015 - Despite poor STATUS: Broken up. I just worry that it will become broken, that people are starting to fall out of love with the island of love. As a huge fan of the show, I'm not ready to switch off just yet. But I no longer watch with rose tinted glasses, I watch with a lot more scepticism than I once did, which is a shame. I find myself trying to decipher between showmance and serious, instead of sitting back and enjoying the chaos of it all. Advertisement And I guess the big question is, can Love Island ever get back to how it once was? Can people still find true love over fame? Well we could at least give it the best chance to prevail by choosing age and career wisely when casting. Maybe then we could rekindle that magic of the earlier seasons, you know, the ones that made Love Island iconic in the first place. 7 Are people starting to fall out of love with the show? 7 Contestants aren't wrong for wanting to find success on the show Credit: Instagram Advertisement 7 Can people still find true love over fame?
