
Sweetgreen Layoffs: Cutting Support Staff, Ripple Fries
Sweetgreen, the popular eatery known for its $16 salads, is streamlining its staff and its menu after reporting disappointing earnings this week.
According to Restaurant Business, Sweetgreen has made job cuts equating to 10% of open and existing positions on its California-based support team. Sweetgreen employed over 6,400 workers as of the end of last year.
Meanwhile, the chain will also discontinue its $4.95 Ripple Fries, marketed as a healthier alternative to French fries, a mere five months after introducing the option.

Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Neman said on a Thursday earnings call with analysts that while consumers "loved" the air-fried ripple fries and had a "great reaction" to the product, it was a "distraction" to employees and added extra cooking complexity to their day.
Sweetgreen has already tested removing the fries from its menu in certain stores, and seen "huge improvements in customer satisfaction" as employees focus on the salad chain's core products, Neman said on the call. Sweetgreen will discontinue the item next week, he added.
Sweetgreen made these changes to its staff and menu after posting disappointing quarterly earnings. On Thursday, Sweetgreen announced its second-quarter results, noting that same-store sales fell by 7.6%. The chain reported a net loss of $23.2 million, up from $14.5 million in the same period last year. Total revenue increased by just 0.5% year-over-year to $185.6 million.
What is Sweetgreen's turnaround plan?
Though Sweetgreen may have reported poor financial results this week, the salad chain has a turnaround plan in place that includes offering larger sizes of proteins, improving the taste of its chicken and salmon, and offering discounts on salads ($13 instead of $15) for members.
Mitch Reback, Sweetgreen's chief financial officer, said on the earnings call that the company was also bringing back seasonal options and chef collaborations, as well as presenting new offerings at "more moderate price points."
"While we're not yet where we want to be, we're confident that these actions position Sweetgreen to emerge stronger, more focused, and better aligned with what our guests and investors expect from us," Reback said on the call.

According to Reback, the changes have already taken effect and have helped sales in the current quarter.
Sweetgreen's stock was down over 70% year-to-date at the time of writing. The company's market value was a little over $1 billion.

UnitedHealth jumps after Berkshire Hathaway buys new stake
(Reuters) -Shares of UnitedHealth Group surged more than 12% in premarket trading on Friday after Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway revealed a new investment in the health insurer. Berkshire owned 5.04 million UnitedHealth shares worth about $1.57 billion as of June 30, it said in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The investment comes at the time when its shares have been battered amid rising health care costs, a U.S. Department of Justice probe related to its billing practices, a cyberattack, and the shooting death of former top executive Brian Thompson in December. Oil prices dip ahead of Trump-Putin talks
Oil (BZ=F, CL=F) Oil prices dipped in early European trading on Friday morning, ahead of US president Donald Trump's meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska later in the day, to discuss the war in Ukraine. Brent crude (BZ=F) futures fell 0.6% to $66.44 per barrel at the time of writing, while West Texas Intermediate futures (CL=F) declined 0.7% to $63.51 a barrel. The talks are scheduled to take place at 8.30pm BST, so any developments would likely emerge after the US market close. This will be the first time Trump and Putin have met one-on-one in six years, as the US president tries to broker an end to Russia's war in Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News Radio on Thursday, Trump suggested that if the talks go well this could pave the way for a second meeting including Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, but also estimated that there was a 25% chance that the meeting would not be successful. Jim Reid, global head of macro research and thematic strategy at Deutsche Bank ( said: "[Trump] described this potential follow-up as 'very, very important', indicating it could be the forum for striking a deal. Our [economist] Peter Sidorov notes that while an imminent breakthrough is unlikely, the summit will still be an important signpost for US-Russia relations and the war in Ukraine." Gold (GC=F) Gold prices edged slightly higher on Friday morning, as investors remained cautious ahead of the Trump-Putin summit. Gold futures (GC=F) rose 0.1% to $3,387.20 per ounce at the time of writing, while spot gold advanced 0.2% to $3,343.85 per ounce. The precious metal is on course to end the week in the red, despite inflation data released on Thursday coming in hotter than expected. Gold is considered to act as a hedge against inflation, as when price growth erodes purchasing power, investors tend to look to the precious metal as a store of wealth. US PPI for July showed inflation for businesses rose 0.9% over the prior month, well ahead of the 0.2% increase that was forecast, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed Thursday. According to a Reuters report, Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said: "Gold is still grappling with the aftermath of the PPI jump, which raised questions over just how far the Fed may be inclined to reduce rates this year." Pound (GBPUSD=X, GBPEUR=X) The pound gained 0.2% against the dollar (GBPUSD=X) on Friday morning, to trade at $1.3555, helped by a weaker greenback. The US dollar index ( which measures the greenback against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.4% on Friday morning to 97.91. The moves come as Trump and Putin's talks loom, while investors also digest a raft of economic data both in the UK and the US released this week. Sterling hit a one-month high on Thursday, after UK economic growth data came in better than expected. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.3% in the second quarter, which was stronger than the 0.1% expected, though it still marked a slow from a rate of 0.7% for the first three months of the year. Attention will now turn to the release of US retail sales data and industrial production data for July, due out later in the day. Applied Materials' shares sink on weak China demand, tariff risks
(Reuters) -Shares of Applied Materials tumbled nearly 14% in premarket trading on Friday after the chip equipment maker issued weak fourth-quarter forecasts on sluggish China demand, fueling concerns over tariff-related risks. The Santa-Clara, California-based company's forecast comes after similar tariff warnings from ASML Holding, the world's biggest supplier of chip-making equipment, last month. CEO Gary Dickerson flagged lower visibility and increased uncertainty in the near-term, citing "wide-ranging implications for the semiconductor industry" from the dynamic policy environment, during a post-earnings investor call. China, Applied Materials' top revenue source in the July quarter, accounting for 35% of sales, has emerged as a growing risk as U.S. export restrictions weigh on new orders for chipmaking tool suppliers. "China volatility is significantly clouding visibility into core earnings potential both geopolitically and cyclically," Deutsche Bank strategists said in a note. Applied Materials expects revenue of $6.70 billion, plus or minus $500 million, for the fourth quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of $7.33 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Its projected profit also came in below estimates. Some analysts, including Harlan Sur, noted that the slowdown in China demand and erratic orders from major foundry customers are "more a reflection of timing of spending rather than structural issues." The stock has risen 15.7% so far this year, compared with a 12.5% increase in the Nasdaq index and a nearly 10% gain in the S&P 500 index. The company's third-quarter revenue rose 8% to $7.30 billion from a year ago, beating estimates of $7.22 billion.
