Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm Officially Begins Commercial Operation
The Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm has begun commercial operation at its design capacity of 640MW. The project's 80 wind turbine generators lift Taiwan's installed total offshore wind capacity above 3.9 GW. Enough clean energy to power over 600,000 Taiwanese households annually. HAMBURG, GERMANY - EQS Newswire - 21 August 2025 - Yunneng Wind Power Co., Ltd. (Yunneng) announced today that the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) has officially entered full commercial operation. The 640 MW OWF, consisting out of 80 fully grid-connected wind turbine generators (WTGs), has successfully secured all required electricity business licenses, has met all mandatory regulatory aspects and has fulfilled all applicable contractual obligations under the financing agreement. This achievement marks a significant milestone as one of Taiwan's largest OWFs transitions into its operations and maintenance (O&M) is a joint venture of Skyborn Renewables, TotalEnergies, Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group) and Sojitz Corporation. Tanah Rata rep warns of local farming collapse from ‘uncontrolled inflow' of cheap Chinese vegetables
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Tanah Rata assemblyman Ho Chi Yang has raised alarm over a sharp surge in cheap Chinese vegetable imports, warning that the flood of produce is crippling Malaysian farmers and putting the nation's food security at risk. He said Malaysia's vegetable imports from China rose from US$550 million (RM2.3 billion) in 2022 to US$882 million in 2024, marking an average annual increase of 26 per cent. Ho argued that such a drastic rise could not be explained by domestic demand alone and suggested that it risks destabilising the local market. 'The uncontrolled inflow of imported vegetables, regardless of type, inevitably risks distorting the supply-demand balance and severely undermining the livelihoods of local farmers,' he said in a statement today. Farm-gate prices in Cameron Highlands have plunged to as low as RM0.50 to RM0.60 per kilogram for cucumbers and cabbages, leaving many farmers struggling to cover their costs, he pointed out. Ho said prolonged losses would drive small and medium-scale farmers out of business, discouraging younger Malaysians from entering the sector. He noted that several crops, including cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, eggplants and long beans, have already reached self-sufficiency ratios of over 100 per cent. In such cases, he said excessive imports amounted to oversupply that depressed prices and damaged the domestic agricultural ecosystem. 'Continued losses will drive farmers out of the sector, eventually collapsing domestic production capacity and undermining the nation's food security goals,' Ho cautioned. He urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to review the current import mechanism and impose targeted quotas for vegetables where local supply is already sufficient. At the same time, he called for subsidies on fertilisers and pesticides to reduce production costs for small and medium-scale farmers. Ho stressed that securing farmers' livelihoods and reducing reliance on imports would be a cornerstone in helpnig Malaysia achieve the agricultural priorities set out in the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Penang commits to nominal land rates for LRT Mutiara Line to keep costs down
GEORGE TOWN, August 21 — All state-owned land required for the LRT Mutiara Line will be surrendered to MRT Corp at nominal rates to help keep the project's costs low, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said today. He said the state has agreed that all lands under its ownership, including those held by local councils and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), will be provided at these rates. 'We are only claiming historical costs for lands that we might have acquired 30 years ago, and not the current market value,' Chow said at a press conference after launching the Icon Sunsuria and Island Hospital's Cancer Centre. He added that negotiations on land acquisitions are nearing completion. Chow also addressed the recent increase in the LRT project's budget ceiling, explaining that the new figure reflects a significant change in the project's scope after it was taken over by the federal government. 'The costs cannot be compared to what was announced two years ago,' he said, noting that the alignment was expanded to include a cross-channel connection to Butterworth. 'The increase in costs is due to the addition of this scope, which involves a connection from Macallum to Penang Sentral, and also includes land acquisition costs.' He reiterated statements by MRT Corp that the new budget of RM16.8 billion is a ceiling, and the final cost will only be known after all work packages are awarded. 'Only package one for civil and structural works from Silicon Island to Komtar has been awarded whereas the package two for Macallum to Butterworth has not been offered yet, the package for the systems works has not been offered yet,' he explained. Chow added that the government wants to ensure that the project comes in under the ceiling cost. Last month, MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim had appealed to the state government to set land surrender rates at nominal values to help lower project costs, calling the Mutiara Line the 'most reasonably priced LRT system in Malaysia.' The LRT Mutiara line will span 29.5km with 21 stations, running from Silicon Island to Komtar on the island, and then across the channel to Penang Sentral in Butterworth. The project is expected to be completed in 2031. Three other lines, covering areas like Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi, and Air Itam, are also planned, with all four lines projected for full completion by 2050.
