AI ignites Southeast Asia's tech boom as Gitex Asia debuts in Singapore
According to global consultancy Kearney, AI alone is expected to contribute an additional US$1 trillion to the region's GDP by 2030, positioning it as a critical driver of long-term economic growth.
As AI integration across industries intensifies, global investors are increasingly directing capital toward Southeast Asian markets—signalling confidence in the region's digital future.
A pivotal platform supporting this momentum is Gitex Asia, the newly launched Asian edition of the globally recognised Gitex (Gulf Information Technology Exhibition) brand, which originated in Dubai.
The inaugural edition was held in Singapore from April 23 to 25, 2025, at Marina Bay Sands, attracting over 700 tech companies and venture capital firms from more than 70 countries.
The event marks Gitex's strategic expansion into Southeast Asia, aiming to tap into one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies. It serves as a key enabler of innovation, fostering cross-border collaborations, investment flows, and public-private partnerships essential for scaling tech solutions regionally and globally.
Trixie LohMirmand, executive vice president at Dubai World Trade Centre and chief executive officer of KAOUN International, emphasised the importance of strategic alliances in AI development.
"AI cannot be developed or utilised in isolation. It requires public-private partnerships, but even more so, it demands cross-border, cross-continental, and cross-industry collaboration," she said at the launch of Gitex Asia x AI Everything Singapore here on Wednesday.
She further noted that events like Gitex Asia are instrumental in helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups scale globally, contributing to a more inclusive global tech ecosystem.
"Our commitment is to continue expanding the global ecosystem, providing more opportunities for SMEs and startups to grow," she said.
As Southeast Asia's largest platform for startups, accelerators, and investors, Gitex Asia enabled high-level discussions around strategic growth, including mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, and cross-sector collaborations.
The event also spotlighted cutting-edge developments in key sectors such as cybersecurity, fintech, smart cities, green technology, healthtech, biotechnology, 5G and telecommunications - underscoring the breadth of innovation reshaping the regional economy.
LohMirmand concluded that Gitex Asia is not merely a technology showcase - it is a strategic platform for fostering regional leadership and driving meaningful transformation across the global digital economy.

BANGKOK: Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong plans to request a 700 million baht (US$21 million) budget from the Cabinet for a domestic flight giveaway initiative aimed at attracting at least 200,000 international tourists to various destinations across Thailand. Sorawong said on Wednesday (Aug 20) that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will submit a proposal to the Cabinet next week for the allocation of the budget to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The initiative, 'Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights,' aims to encourage foreign tourists to explore destinations beyond Thailand's major tourist cities. The TAT will collaborate with six domestic airlines—Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Airways International (Thai), Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet—on joint promotional activities to boost Thailand's tourism industry as a key driver of economic growth. 'The government will support domestic flight tickets priced at 1,750 baht per one-way trip and 3,500 baht for round trips. The initiative aims to attract at least 200,000 foreign tourists, covering destinations across Thailand, with a particular focus on Unesco-designated cities, popular tourist spots, and key destinations nationwide,' Sorawong explained. 'The total budget for this project is 700 million baht, which will run from August to December, with travel to take place from September to November.' International tourists purchasing standard airfare tickets into Thailand through airlines' websites or directly with multi-city options from Thai and Bangkok Airways, or via fly-thru/check-through services from Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, and Thai, or through online travel agents (OTAs), will receive complimentary round-trip tickets for domestic flights along with a 20kg luggage allowance. Each traveller will be entitled to two domestic flight tickets (one for departure and one for return), or can opt for a one-way ticket depending on their travel plans. The scheme is expected to generate a direct revenue of at least 8.81 billion baht from international tourist spending, with a broader economic impact estimated at 21.80 billion baht. This initiative draws inspiration from Japan's 'free domestic flights' campaign, which aims to distribute tourist traffic away from major cities and into secondary destinations. It aligns with the Thai government's policy of declaring 2025 as the 'Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year'. Sorawong also provided an update on the 'Half-Price Thailand Travel' scheme, a domestic tourism promotion. He reported that bookings for major tourist cities have already reached capacity, while approximately 54,075 out of the 500,000 available spots remain in secondary cities, with full usage expected by September. The rule announced Aug 19 by the Bank of Thailand is meant to help combat the huge criminal industry of online scams, which makes billions of dollars annually and is especially active in South-East Asia. In many countries there is increasing pressure on banks to play a more active role in safeguarding the assets of customers targeted by scammers. The new measure aims to curb financial fraud by preventing criminals from receiving and transferring a large amount of money at one time, and enabling timely freezing of illicit funds in order to increase the chances that victims will be able to recover at least some of their money, according to Daranee Saeju, the bank's assistant governor for Payment Systems Policy and Financial Consumer Protection. Taiwan's 2026 defence spending to exceed 3% of GDP

(EPA Images pic) TAIPEI : Taiwan's cabinet plans defence spending next year of T$949.5 billion (US$31.27 billion), amounting to 3.32% of gross domestic product (GDP), the official Central News Agency said today, set to cross a threshold of 3% for the first time since 2009. The move comes as China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has ramped up military and political pressure over the past five years to assert those claims, which Taipei strongly rejects. However, Taiwan also faces calls from Washington to spend more on its own defence, mirroring pressure from the US on Europe. This month, President Lai Ching-te said he wanted to boost defence spending to more than 3% of GDP next year. 'The budget includes funding for the coast guard, veterans and special projects,' the agency added. It did not say what the meant in terms of a percentage increase over this year's defence spending. Taiwan was including spending for the coast guard in its total defence budget for the first time, two senior officials briefed on the matter told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'They are standing on the frontline,' said one, referring to the coast guard, which figures in regular stand-offs with China's coast guard and would, in time of war, be pressed into the navy's effort to defend Taiwan. The cabinet will hold a press conference later today to announce budget details. Taiwan's government has made military modernisation a key policy platform and has repeatedly pledged to spend more on its defences given the rising threat from China, including developing made-in-Taiwan submarines. China's air force flies almost daily missions into the skies near Taiwan, and holds periodic war games, the last in April. China is also rapidly modernising its armed forces, with new aircraft carriers, stealth fighter jets and missiles. In March China unveiled a rise of 7.2% in this year's defence spending, to ¥1.78 trillion (US$248.17 billion), outpacing its 2025 economic growth target of about 5%.
