UN launches a rescue operation after 8 migrants die off Djiboutian coast
The UN migration agency said Wednesday that eight migrants died and 22 others were missing after they were forced off a boat near the Djiboutian coast.
The International Organization for Migration, or IOM, in a statement said the migrants were part of a group of 150 others who were forced by smugglers to disembark a boat and swim to shore on June 5.
The migrants were found in the desert by IOM patrol teams and taken to a migrant response center.
The IOM and authorities in Djibouti are continuing with a search and rescue operation to find the missing migrants.
'Every life lost at sea is a tragedy that should never happen,' said Celestine Frantz, IOM Regional Director for the East, Horn and Southern Africa.
Frantz said that the migrants were 'forced into impossible choices by smugglers who show no regard for human life.'
Thousands of migrants from African, Middle Eastern and South Asian countries seeking a better life in Europe attempt irregular migration every year.
Smugglers pack vessels full of desperate people willing to risk their lives to reach continental Europe.
Most of the vessels get migrants across the Red Sea to Gulf countries before they proceed further to European nations.
Yemen is a major route for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa trying to reach Gulf countries for work, with hundreds of thousands attempting the route each year.

In a Mexico Border Town Famed for Crossings, ‘There Are No Migrants'
Tijuana had migrants sleeping in its parks, shelters packed with families, and claimed to be the busiest border crossing by land in the Western Hemisphere. Now, the migrants trying to pass through Tijuana's gateway to Southern California have all but disappeared from sight. The street where people lined up, waiting for asylum appointments to try to enter the United States legally, lies deserted. At the border wall, which some migrants climbed in desperate attempts at illegal crossings, the only ruckus nearby is road construction. On Thursday morning, five people waited on the Mexico side of the border crossing where crowds had once gathered. 'People aren't coming here,' said Lenis Mojica, 49, a Venezuelan migrant who has been living in a shelter here since January. 'Everyone has left. No one else has arrived.' Mexican cities along the border have reported similar drop-offs in migrant numbers in recent months, a fall that began before President Trump was inaugurated but that has grown more dramatic since he took office, promising a crackdown on immigration. In April, U.S. border agents apprehended 8,383 people along the U.S.-Mexico border, down from 129,000 apprehensions in April 2024, and far below the record of nearly 250,000 apprehensions in December 2023. Homeland Security reveals identities of the 4 ‘public safety threats' who escaped Newark ICE facility
Print Close By Peter Pinedo Published June 13, 2025 The Department of Homeland Security has revealed the identities of the four migrants who escaped a Newark ICE facility on Thursday night, identifying all four as "public safety threats" who are still at large. The agency is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the four migrants who broke out of Delaney Hall, a privately run ICE detention facility on Thursday night, amid chaotic scenes both inside and outside the facility. According to DHS, "the four criminal illegal aliens currently evading federal law enforcement are public safety threats." DHS identified the four escaped migrants as Honduran illegals Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes and Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez and Colombian illegals Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada and Andres Pineda-Mogollon, each of whom has previously been arrested for felony offenses including aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a handgun and terroristic threats. RETURNED SALVADORAN MIGRANT KILMAR ABREGO GARCIA ARRAIGNED ON FEDERAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING CHARGES IN TENNESSEE Bautista-Reyes illegally entered the U.S. in 2021 under the Biden administration and was arrested by the Wayne Township, New Jersey, Police Department on May 3 for aggravated assault, attempt to cause bodily injury, terroristic threats, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. Sandoval-Lopez illegally entered the U.S. as a minor in 2019 and was arrested by the Passaic Police Department in October for unlawful possession of a handgun and again on February 15 for aggravated assault. Castaneda-Lozada entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 and was arrested by the Hammonton Police Department on May 15 for burglary, theft and conspiracy to commit burglary. Pineda-Mogollon entered the U.S. in 2023 and overstayed his tourist visa. He was arrested by the New York City Police Department on April 25 for larceny and again on May 21 by the Union, New Jersey, Police Department for residential burglary, conspiracy to commit residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. ICE OFFICERS ASSAULTED DURING RAID THAT NABBED 70 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AT MEAT PLANT: DHS Immigration attorney Mustafa Cetin told that around 50 detainees at the private facility pushed down a dormitory wall after becoming agitated when meals were delayed. "It's about the food, and some of the detainees were getting aggressive and it turned violent," Cetin said. He added that his client reported the wall was "not very strong" and described detainees hanging bedsheets in what may have been an escape attempt. The client also said he smelled gas during the incident. By 6 p.m., dozens of officers from the Essex County Sheriff's Office and Newark Police were present, according to Rutgers University-Newark professor Whitney Strub, who posted images of the police presence and said he and others outside the jail "were all coughing at the same time," after being exposed to what they believed was "some kind of gas," reported. DEMOCRAT ACCUSES TRUMP OF UNLEASHING 'CAMPAIGN OF TERROR' ON ILLEGALS AS LA RIOTS RAGE At approximately 9 p.m., a group of protesters blocked an SUV from exiting an ancillary gate at Delaney Hall, forcing it to back into the facility. PIX11 News reported that the escapees were seen running near Turnpike 78 and Delancey Street. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP DHS contested reporting that there had been widespread unrest at the facility, saying "this privately held facility remains dedicated to providing high-quality services, including around-the-clock access to medical care, in-person and virtual legal and family visitation, general and legal library access, translation services, dietician-approved meals, religious and specialty diets, recreational amenities, and opportunities to practice their religious beliefs." In a Friday statement, a senior DHS official said that "DHS has become aware of four detainees at the privately held Delaney Hall Detention Facility escaping" and that "additional law enforcement partners have been brought in to find these escapees and a BOLO has been disseminated." The senior official encouraged the public to call emergency services or the ICE tip line with any relevant information on the four escapees. Print Close URL

Texas woman arrested for allegedly smuggling illegal immigrants hidden inside box truck
A Texas woman was arrested on Wednesday after Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers discovered 25 illegal immigrants crammed into the back of a box truck, hidden behind mattresses and inside a crawlspace. DPS said 43-year-old Silvia Patricia Santamaria, of Houston, was arrested and charged with 25 counts of human smuggling and has since been booked into the Live Oak County Jail. Just after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a concerned citizen approached a DPS trooper at a truck stop along Interstate 37 in George West, Texas, regarding a minor crash that happened in the parking lot. When the trooper contacted the driver of a white 2005 International box truck involved in the crash, later identified as Santamaria, she allegedly told the law enforcement official she was driving to Houston after picking up mattresses in Alton, Texas. DPS said the trooper noticed inconsistencies in Santamaria's travel plans and asked for consent to search the truck. With assistance from the George West Police Department, the trooper discovered 25 illegal immigrants inside a small corner of the box truck who were attempting to hide behind 30 mattresses and inside a crawl space within the truck's wall, DPS said. DPS added that there was no ventilation inside the truck. The group of immigrants comprised of 12 males, 12 females and an 11-year-old child. All the migrants were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, India, Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, DPS said. The illegal immigrants were removed from the truck and received medical evaluation before being referred to the U.S. Border Patrol. In 2022, San Antonio officials discovered 51 dead immigrants inside an abandoned tractor trailer. Officials said at the time they believed the truck was abandoned after it experienced mechanical problems. A city worker discovered the trailer after hearing a cry from inside the trailer. At least 46 migrants were found dead at the scene and more died in hospitals.
