In U-turn, Gaude says he never said CM involved in corruption

Time of India28-05-2025

Panaji: Art and culture minister Govind Gaude on Wednesday took a u-turn and said that he never stated that chief minister
Pramod Sawant
is involved in any corruption, but that the media misinterpreted his statement.
Gaude's clarification comes within two days of Sawant deciding to act against him.
Meanwhile, state BJP president Damodar Naik said that Gaude has been summoned to the BJP office on Thursday over this statement.
Gaude, who was out of the state, arrived in Goa and attended the cabinet meeting. 'The speculative statement which has appeared in various media is a misinterpretation by the media. I never said in my statement that the Goa chief minister is involved in corruption.
Nowhere have I mentioned such a thing,' said Gaude.
'I want to say one thing: the Goa chief minister is my close friend. For the past five years, I worked with him. Today, I came all the way to meet the chief minister. I met him and briefed him. I spoke on the system of the department,' he said.
On Monday, Sawant strongly criticised Gaude for raising serious charges against him and said that action would be taken against him.

Sawant's statement came a day after Gaude alleged that there was rampant corruption in the tribal welfare department under the CM. 'A responsible minister should make a responsible statement. I have taken cognisance of it. He should not make irresponsible statements. Necessary action will be taken as soon as possible,' Sawant said. Without spelling out what action he intended to take or whether he intended to drop Gaude from his cabinet, Sawant only said, 'Wait till I take action.
'
Gaude on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the tribal welfare department and raised questions about the department's administrative efficiency and transparency. 'A huge amount of taxpayers' money is allotted to the tribal welfare department. If it is unable to organise this programme efficiently, then it only shows a lack of control over the administration,' Gaude said at the event, organised by the tribal welfare department in association with the United Tribal Associations Alliance (UTAA) at Ponda.
The minister was seemingly piqued over the poor turnout at the event.

How to kill MNREGA in three easy steps? Just follow these govt's 'tricks', says Jairam Ramesh

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Centre, reacting to a report by The Indian Express that revealed a significant policy shift in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). The report stated that, for the first time, the central government has capped expenditure under MNREGA at 60% of its total annual budget for the first half of the financial year 2025–26. Ramesh described the development as part of a deliberate "three-step formula" to systematically dismantle the rural employment scheme, which has served as a lifeline for millions of vulnerable households across India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unfriendliest Countries in the World, Ranked BigGlobalTravel Undo 'Three easy steps to kill MNREGA' Referring to the Indian Express report , Ramesh outlined what he termed a calculated plan by the government to phase out the demand-driven scheme: Step 1: Starve MNREGA of funds over the years, resulting in stagnant wages and a growing backlog of pending payments, which now stands at a staggering ₹21,000 crore at the beginning of FY 2025–26. Live Events Step 2: Impose the Finance Ministry's Monthly/Quarterly Expenditure Plan (MEP/QEP) on MNREGA, restricting ministries to spend only 60% of the total annual allocation in the first six months—thus undermining the flexible, demand-based nature of the programme. Step 3: With no funds left after clearing backlogs, bring work allocation under the scheme to a near halt, denying rural households their legal right to employment. Ramesh warned that the first two steps have already been executed, and the third is "now going to come out soon," which he said would mark the effective end of the scheme in practice. "What needs to be done instead" In response, the Congress leader laid out a list of corrective measures to safeguard and strengthen MNREGA: Raise daily wages to ₹400 to account for inflation and ensure basic livelihood security. Scrap the mandatory Aadhaar-Based Payment System (ABPS), which he said creates unnecessary delays and exclusions. Ensure timely wage payments within the statutory 15-day limit, and compensate workers in case of delays. "Instead of fixing what's broken, the government seems to be dismantling the only safety net millions depend on," Ramesh said, accusing the Modi government of prioritizing fiscal optics over rural welfare. The govt's new rulebook According to the report, the Ministry of Finance has, for the first time, included MNREGA under its MEP/QEP framework — a cash flow management tool introduced in 2017. The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), which had previously resisted such constraints citing the scheme's demand-driven nature, reportedly submitted its quarterly expenditure plan as directed, only to be denied permission to exceed the 60% threshold in the first half of FY 2025–26. This move, experts say, will likely slow down work allocations and further delay wage payments, especially during peak agricultural lean seasons when demand for rural jobs typically surges.

Govt showcases milestones achieved under Modi Govt in last 11 yrs

New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) The Government on Wednesday showcased an array of developmental milestones achieved in the past eleven years in various sectors across all sections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At an event organised by the BJP, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw made an hour-long presentation before the media about the achievements of the NDA Government, with an emphasis that such progress has never been witnessed before the Modi Government took over in 2014. The event was attended by various senior ministers including Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman and Nitin Gadkari, besides party functionaries. Addressing the programme, Vaishnaw asserted that over the last 11 years, the government has worked not only towards economic transformation but also for empowerment of millions to enhance the living standards of citizens, and improving security, expanding road and railway networks, as well as full electrification, reaching even the most remote areas. Citing employment data from EPFO, he said these reflect greater job creation and heightened awareness of employee benefits. He added that at the same time, the Modi government has spearheaded a series of infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Bridge, Atal Tunnel, and the Statue of Unity – all exemplifying India's engineering excellence. A core focus of the government has been the empowerment of marginalised communities, including persons with disabilities, transgender individuals, and those from SC/ST/OBC groups. Access to essential amenities, such as clean water, electricity, healthcare, and digital services, has been expanded to millions of households. India's leadership in green energy was also showcased at the event with the Ministry stating that India continues to set new global benchmarks in sustainability, drawing admiration from international leaders. As India prepares for its first independent human spaceflight and looks towards the Moon and beyond, the government's investment in space technology underscores the nation's growing prominence on the global stage, said the Minister. Guided by the principle of Antyodaya, the government has strived for 100% saturation across all welfare schemes. From housing to healthcare and clean cooking fuel, millions of previously underserved families now have access to basic services. "Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has not only seen an economic transformation but also witnessed the empowerment of millions. The focus has always been on creating long-term, sustainable progress across all sectors, from infrastructure to welfare programs." UNI AJ SSP
