1,169 caught for drunk driving
Hyderabad: In a major drive against drunk driving, the Cyberabad traffic police caught 252 during late-night checks conducted on weekends across multiple locations under the Commissionerate. In Hyderabad, 917 cases were booked in a week.
With increase in alcohol-related crashes in city, the police led a drive against intoxicated drivers in various locations under the Tri Commissionerate limits. The police conducted a focused campaign against drunk driving over the weekend.
According to the Cyberabad traffic police, they had been organising a special large-scale drive by deputing teams to keep a check on drunk driving. Out of a total of 252 vehicles checked during the drive, 199 were two-wheelers, 10 were three-wheelers, and 43 were four-wheelers. The police said that 24 offenders were found with blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) ranging between 200 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. Three persons were in age group of 18-20. The highest offenders (92) were aged between 21-30; 87 were of in 21-30 age group; 54 offenders 41-50 years old.
All apprehended individuals will be presented before the court.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad police conducted a drive against drunk driving between May 17 and 23 caught 917 offenders. Of them, 779 were two-wheelers, 53 three-wheelers, 83 cars and two heavy vehicles. The police said 38 offenders were found with BAC of 200 mg/100 ml and above. Thirteen were aged 18-20; while the highest offenders were aged between 21-30, with 374 offenders; 334 caught were aged 31-40 years; 151 were 41-50 years old. A total of 75 persons were convicted and sentenced to jail in drunk-drive cases.
The police warned the citizens if they indulge in driving under influence of alcohol and cause accidents resulting in fatalities, they will be arrested and charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). It carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in jail along with a fine, said a police officer.

Tension after Ambedkar statue defaced at Nangal village in Punjab's Phillaur
Two months after a similar incident, a statue of BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, was vandalised at Nangal village of Phillaur sub division in Jalandhar district on Monday, triggering tension. CCTV cameras captured a masked man defacing the statue and efforts are on to arrest him. Banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun took responsibility for the incident in a video posted on social media, claiming that the Constitution of India was 'responsible for the attack on Akal Takht (the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs) during Operation Bluestar in June 1984'. SFJ activists had vandalised another Ambedkar statue at Nangal village on March 31. The administration had installed protective glass around that statue. Amritpal Bhonsle, a local Dalit leader, said the accused was caught on camera smearing black ink on Ambedkar's face before spray-painting anti-Constitution and pro-Khalistan slogans on the boundary wall of the nearby government school. 'It is unfortunate that the such an incident has happened again in the village,' Bhonsle said, adding activists of Dalit organisations are holding a meeting to decide on the future course of action. He demanded the arrest of the accused at the earliest and strict deterrent action. A case was registered under Section 299 (hurting religious sentiments) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Phillaur police station. Senior officials of the Jalandhar rural police were at the spot. 'We are gathering CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the route the accused took. He will be arrested soon,' a senior police official said. On April 4, two SFJ activists, Sukhbir Singh and Avtar Singh, both residents of Nurpur Chatha village in Jalandhar district, were arrested for defacing the statue on March 31. The police had booked Pannun also in the case. Monday's incident comes four months after a statue of Ambedkar, who led the Dalit rights movement, was vandalised on Heritage Street leading to the Golden Temple in Amritsar on January 26, triggering tension in the border state. In Punjab, Dalits constitute 32% of the total population, a figure roughly double the national average of 16.6%. The Doaba region, including Jalandhar district, has a sizeable Dalit population and the move by the separatist outfit is seen as a mischievous bid to spark off social and communal tension in the state. After the Republic Day incident when a youngster climbed atop the statue in Amritsar and tried to vandalise it, the authorities decided that all Ambedkar statues would be secured with toughened glass to prevent any damage to them.

7-year-old girl gang-raped, murdered in Assam; 2 arrested
Silchar: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped and murdered by two men in Assam's Tinsukia district on May 28, police said on Monday, adding that the two prime accused were arrested on May 31 and June 1. The incident happened in a village under the jurisdiction of Bordubi Police Station on May 28 afternoon. The accused threw the girl's body in a drain before absconding, said the Tinsukia deputy superintendent of police (DSA), Nitisha Jagtap. Police said that the family members later lodged a complaint at the Bordubi Police Station and a case was registered under sections 65(2) (raping a woman under sixteen years) and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The DSP said that one of the accused, Raja Karmakar (26), was arrested on May 31 from the Dirak Gate area near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, and he later revealed the identity of another person involved in this. 'Initially, it looked like only one person was involved, but later with the medical examinations of the body and the confession by the arrested person, we came to know that this was a gang-rape,' she told HT on Monday. The second accused, Shyam Murari (25), a resident of Kehang Tea Estate in Tinsukia, was arrested on June 1. 'We arrested them for rape and murder, and now we have appealed to court to add the relevant sections of gang-rape,' she added. Police said that the girl was sleeping at her home when the accused entered the house, forcibly took her to a forest area and raped her. 'One aged lady saw them when they were taking her, and she asked them about it, but they said they were dropping her home. The lady has identified them and helped in the investigation,' police said. The incident triggered a massive protest in the locality and over hundred tea garden workers staged a protest in front of the Bordubi Police Station on Sunday. They demanded strict punishment for the accused. Police said that the arrested persons have gone through interrogations, and they'll be produced before the court on Monday. 'We are investigating the matter further and recorded statements from all the relevant individuals,' officials said. The body of the victim was sent for postmortem at a government hospital, and it was later handed over to the family members, police said.

'Beaten, burnt with cigarettes': Autistic siblings subjected to rape and torture at Dehradun boarding school
Two autistic brothers, aged 9 and 13, from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, were reportedly abused at a boarding school for special needs children in Dehradun. The boys were allegedly beaten, burnt with cigarettes, and raped by a staff member after they were admitted in April. The truth came out when their mother visited them last Friday. She took them to a friend's office, where the boys broke down and shared what had happened to them. They named the accused as Monu Pal, 29, from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. The mother filed a complaint with the local police.
