TamJai and SamGor releases collectable soft toys and two in-app games to win exclusive discounts

If there's one thing about Hongkongers, it's that we love TamJai and TamJai SamGor noodles. (Whether you're more a fan of the yellow bowls or black bowls is a different can of worms.) Lovers of the Yunnan-style rice noodles can now look forward to collecting some adorable plush toys from the brother brands, as well as two new mobile games where players can win exclusive promotions and discounts.
Get the TamJai Club mobile app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to find a cutesy cartoon-like game where ingredients have to battle a ravenous volcano. The game is split into four chapters with five missions each, and every time players finish a chapter, they'll get awarded with a coupon to get a rice noodle bowl for just $1. Finish all four chapters to win free Hunan chicken wings for a year!
In a similar vein, the SamGor Spicy Club mobile app houses a pixelated fighter game with four chapters containing five missions each. The reward for finishing each chapter is a coupon to redeem rice noodle bowls with an increasing number of ingredients for just $1, until defeating the entire game unlocks a year's worth of free Hunan chicken wings. The first 30 people to complete the game will also win a golden ticket that'll allow you to skip all queues when dining in-store in Hong Kong – an absolute score during Hong Kong's busy lunch hours.
But arguably the best part of these new promotions from TamJai and SamGor is the fact that they're releasing a set of collectable plush toys, shaped like some of the most commonly ordered ingredients in their noodles. These include a Chinese chive, a beef ball, a mushroom, and a slice of century egg – and if you download the TamJai app, you'll also find that they're the fighter characters in the game. The plush toys are available to purchase at 30 select TamJai Yunnan Mixian stores across Hong Kong, at a price of $88 per character, and they'll also throw in a $40 cash voucher with every purchase. Another way to get your hands on the collectables is to lock in and be one of the first 10 people to complete the TamJai Club game, which will earn you a complete set of the toys.
TamJai and SamGor's game promotions will run from July 15 to August 25, so make sure your apps are all up to date and start clicking from Tuesday!

See Wan Chai through the eyes of Hong Kong writers with these literary walking tours

If you're a bit of a bookworm with a soft spot for Hong Kong's cultural history, then this event should interest you. The Museum of Hong Kong Literature (MHKL), in collaboration with the Urban Renewal Authority (URA), has organised a series of literature-themed tours of Wan Chai, integrating local stories of the neighbourhood with literary elements and history. This 'Touring Wan Chai with Locals' series is part of the URA's efforts to preserve and highlight the individual characteristics of neighbourhoods while revitalising them. Starting from the group of pre-war Grade II historic buildings on 7 Mallory Street named M7, the tour focuses on revitalisation projects in Wan Chai, as well as historical or specialty architecture, streets, and shops, highlighting sights around town that you may otherwise overlook in our busy everyday lives. The tours will be conducted by local Hongkongers who know Wan Chai like the back of their hands, supplemented by research from the MHKL on literature that has mentioned this area's history, culture, native ways of living, and places of interest, bringing to life people and events that have ties to Wan Chai. Expect to see this corner of Hong Kong through the eyes of local and visiting writers such as Eileen Chang, Yesi Leung Ping-kwan, and Xiaosi, who have all recorded their memories of Wan Chai in their published works. Some of the locations covered in these tours include the old Wan Chai Market, Blue House, the old Wan Chai Post Office, Spring Garden Lane, as well as 186-190 Queen's Road East. Make sure to grab a 'tour passport', available at M7 and select locations along the route, so you can collect specially designed stamps to document your journey. The tours are free to attend, and interested parties can register to be chosen via lottery. 'Touring Wan Chai with Locals' will run on August 10, 13, 20, 24, and 27. Since Hongkongers are such foodies, there will also be a special tour session that combines literary stories with Wan Chai's food spots, led by Dr Ames Siu Yan-ho, who is a university lecturer with a passionate focus on Hong Kong food culture. While munching your way across Wan Chai, attendees of this session will learn about the origins of Cantonese cuisine, this history of cha chaan tengs, how to properly enjoy Hong Kong-style milk tea, and more. This foodie tour will take place on August 16, and registration opens on August 10.

Hong Kong is getting two special-edition Chiikawa Days Octopus cards

Whenever Hongkongers like something, we go all out in the hyperfixation. In celebration of the upcoming Chiikawa Days exhibition in K11 Musea, Octopus is soon releasing two special-edition Octopus cards themed after the popular Chiikawa Days characters. Featuring Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi running around with their extermination sticks, these cards will have a day design with recognisable buildings from the Hong Kong cityscape in the background, and a dark blue night version with fireworks. The physical Octopus cards are priced at $128, and will be available for preorder on the Octopus app from August 1 to 31. For those who don't want to lug around another card in their wallets, the Chiikawa-themed cards are also available for digital purchase on the Octopus app for $18. After the theme is purchased and applied, the Chiikawa characters will grace the app's home screen, the Octopus activation screen, as well as the digital card image.

The cha chaan teng, or tea restaurant, is one of the city's oldest and attracts queues even on a sweltering day. With its sticky Formica tables, it is not glamorous.
