Call for Refugee-Led Clean Energy Enterprises in Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia to apply for inclusive investment grants

Zawya25-02-2025
Ashden, a renowned climate solutions charity, is calling for applications from refugee-led clean energy enterprises in Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia for its new Inclusive Investment Pilots grants. These grants, available in amounts of up to £10,000 (local currency equivalent), are aimed at supporting clean energy projects in displacement settings, with six grants in Uganda, three in Kenya, and three in Ethiopia.
This initiative builds on Ashden's commitment to renewable energy for refugees and displaced communities. The focus is on solar power, clean cooking technologies, and productive renewable energy solutions that are specifically designed for and led by refugees and displaced people. These grants are part of the Powering Refugees and Displaced People Award, launched in 2020, which addresses the critical energy needs of those in displacement.
Ashden's new pilot program is designed to foster energy access innovation by providing financial inclusion to refugee entrepreneurs and organizations working on sustainable energy solutions. Successful applicants will not only receive funding but also gain technical assistance and communications support to help transform their initiatives into viable, revenue-generating energy delivery models.
Isona Shibata, Head of International Programmes at Ashden and author of the influential report on Refugee-led Energy Access, highlights the urgency of the program: 'With 120 million displaced people globally, many of whom rely on firewood and charcoal for cooking and have limited access to electricity, there is an acute need to empower refugee entrepreneurs. These individuals must be at the forefront of efforts to deliver clean energy solutions, but historically, they've been unable to access the financial support or technical expertise required for a just transition.'
The initiative is generously funded by the Howden Foundation, the corporate foundation of the global insurance group Howden, which supports six Inclusive Investment Pilots in Kenya and Uganda. Clare Ballantine, Head of Howden Foundation, emphasizes, 'We are proud to fund this pioneering program that directly supports refugee communities and the organizations working to enhance their resilience to climate change. Our focus includes solutions like solar irrigation and cooling as a service, which are critical for adapting to extreme heat and drought.'
This grant program is part of the broader Transforming Humanitarian Energy Access program, a collaboration between Ashden, Mercy Corps, and the UNITAR GPA Co-ordination Unit, supported by the Aurora Trust and UK AID through the Transforming Energy Access platform.
Applications for refugee-led clean energy projects are now open. Interested parties can find more details and submit applications through the Ashden website (THEA-IIP-apply). The deadline for stage one applications is March 17, 2025.
This opportunity is a unique chance to support and accelerate the growth of refugee-led clean energy enterprises that can transform displacement settings with sustainable and innovative energy solutions. Apply now to make an impact on the future of energy access for displaced communities.

From Jordan to UAE: How startup provides energy access to refugees

A Dubai-based technology start-up is helping power refugee camps in Jordan. Smart Eye Global is supporting the Azraq Refugee Camp, which faced severe electricity shortages, with a smart system that increased the electricity access from eight hours to 24 hours daily for over 1,000 residents. Energy waste was reduced by 47 percent, saving aid agencies over $50,000 annually in fuel costs. 'We implemented an advanced AI-powered Smart Energy Management System (EMS) to transform energy access and efficiency in the camp,' said Omar Asaad, co-founder and chairperson of Smart Eye Global. 'Environmentally, the system cut CO₂ emissions by 97.2 tonnes per year, equivalent to planting 2,500 trees. Socially, the impact included improved health and food safety, reduced tensions through fair energy distribution, and the creation of over 30 technical jobs for youth within the camp.' The EMS featured smart meters for real-time consumption monitoring and a dynamic load control to prioritise essential appliances like lighting and refrigeration. It also had a 'fair-share algorithm' to ensure equitable energy distribution across households. The system was integrated with solar-diesel hybrid technology to reduce dependency on costly diesel generators. Smart Eye has also partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP), to install smart solar systems in 350 refugee homes in Northern Jordan. The company also has an ongoing smart water project across 40 public schools in the area that uses sensors and AI to detect leaks and optimise usage, aiming to cut water waste by up to 35 percent and improve hygiene for over 10,000 students. Coming to the UAE Originally founded in Jordan, Smart Eye Global was selected as part of Cohort 9 of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund (MBRIF) Innovation Accelerator program earlier this year. This enabled the group to shift to the UAE and scale its impact. 'We chose to set up an office here because the UAE is a strategic hub for clean technology, investment, and global partnerships,' said Omar. 'There is also a growing demand for smart energy solutions among manufacturers, real estate developers, and government entities.' He added that the company is also seeing 'strong opportunities' in the education and green building sectors, where we aim to support retrofitting efforts in schools, universities, and residential complexes. 'The UAE also offers a scalable platform to expand across the Gulf, thanks to its robust innovation ecosystem and sustainability goals,' he said. Pilot projects In the UAE, the company is working on providing AI-powered EMS and sustainability solutions that help industrial, commercial, and residential sectors cut energy waste and reduce carbon emissions in a smart, cost-effective way. 'We have already carried out successful pilot projects in the UAE, including energy audits and EMS deployments for industrial partners like IFFCO, where we helped improve operational efficiency,' he said. 'With support from MBRIF, we are planning to retrofit over 10 educational and commercial buildings with our EMS in 2025. We also aim to support public-private partnerships that enhance grid resilience and lower energy costs across the UAE.' In addition to this, the company is also working on some regional projects. In Oman, the group is part of the Omantel Innovation Labs accelerator and is preparing to launch their first energy efficiency pilots in industrial zones and smart buildings. 'We are also working with NGOs and local governments to deploy modular solar and EMS systems in underserved regions, especially in East and West Africa,' he said. 'These solutions will help provide 24/7 electricity to off-grid schools and health centers.'

Lord Mayor of London expects UK-UAE economic and investment ties to strengthen further

Alastair King, the Lord Mayor of London, is expecting economic relations between the UK and the UAE to strengthen further, with a focus on co-operation and investments in important industrial and financial sectors. These industries of 'mutual strength' include green and transition finance, financial regulation for economic growth, pension reform and financial innovation, the British embassy in the UAE said in a statement on Saturday, following Mr King's visit to the Emirates on Friday. The UK delegation, which included representatives from insurer Howden, financial institution Aberdeen Group, KPMG and FinTech firm Guavapay, won commitments for Emirati participation in City of London Corporation events such as the Net Zero Delivery Summit scheduled for June 23 and May's Global Risk Summit, it said. Mr King, who as Lord Mayor acts as an ambassador for the UK's financial and professional services sector, noted how UK investment strategies align with the 'We the UAE 2031' strategy, supporting objectives across sustainability, innovation and economic diversification. 'The UK and UAE share a commitment to innovation, investment and sustainable growth, which drives our dynamic and growing trade relationship, particularly in the financial sector,' he said. His visit came after this month's unveiling of the Mansion House Accord, an agreement between the UK government and Britain's biggest pension funds aimed at unlocking up to £50 billion ($67.3 billion) in investments for the UK's infrastructure, its businesses and overall economy. 'The accord will strengthen [the UK-UAE] relationship further … this could create valuable co-investment partnerships aligned with the Emirati's appetite for high-quality, de-risked opportunities,' Mr King said. The UK and the UAE have maintained relationships dating to 1971. Co-operation between the countries span intelligence, defence and security, through joint diplomatic initiatives at the UN on hunger and access to education, to climate change, finance and artificial intelligence regulation. Total trade in goods and services between the countries hit £24.3 billion at the end of 2024, making the UAE the UK's 19th largest trading partner and largest trading partner in the Gulf region, data from the British embassy shows. Mr King's visit yielded 'tangible outcomes, including the exploration of collaborative investment initiatives in priority sectors such as sustainability, infrastructure and financial services', the statement said. Discussions also focused on encouraging equity and debt listings on the London Stock Exchange and resolving regulatory barriers for UK financial and professional services firms seeking to establish or expand in the UAE, it added. 'Both parties committed to establishing continuing knowledge exchange in innovation, pension reform and regulatory best practices, with a joint initiative on sustainable finance to be launched in the coming months.'
