Suspended term for driver who caused fatal crash
A driver who admitted causing the death of an 18-year-old woman in a crash in Dorset has been handed a suspended sentence.
Laionie Kennard, from Verwood, died when a BMW driven by Joseph Pickett, left the road near Ringwood on 16 September 2023.
Picket, 20, from Lyneham in Wiltshire, previously admitted causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.
He was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months, and must complete 250 hours of unpaid work.
Picket, who appeared before Poole magistrates on Wednesday, was also disqualified from driving for two years, after which he must take an extended re-test, and was fined £232.
Dorset Police said Laionie had been one of three passengers in the blue BMW 1 Series, driven by Pickett, in Hurn Road, between Ringwood and Matchams at 21:30 BST on Saturday 16 September 2023.
Officers said the car failed to negotiate a bend, left the road and crashed into trees.
Ms Kennard died at the scene.
An investigation by the Serious Collision Investigation Team indicated Pickett was driving at between 43mph and 54mph on the 30mph road as he entered the bend.
PC Leanne Howes said: "Our thoughts are absolutely with Laionie's family and loved ones and nothing will ever make up for their tragic loss.
"This case must serve as another harrowing reminder of the truly devastating consequences that can result from driving without due care and at excessive speed, particularly at night when you have passengers in your vehicle.
"I can only hope that this awful incident makes others stop and think before they get behind the wheel and reminds them of the vital importance of driving in a safe and considerate manner."

Senior pedestrian, moped rider killed in separate NYC crashes in 24 hours
A 74-year-old pedestrian and a 42-year-old man riding a moped were killed by cars during separate back-to-back crashes in the city within 24 hours, officials said Friday. Victim Eric Wexler was crossing the corner of 217 St. and Northern Blvd. in Cambria Heights about 10 p.m. on Wednesday when a 2017 Chevy Tahoe driven by a 47-year-old man heading east on Northern Blvd. rammed into him, cops said. Wexler suffered massive injuries to his head and body and was rushed to North Shore Manhasset Hospital, where he died. The victim was not in the crosswalk and was crossing against the light when he was hit, cops said. The 47-year-old motorist remained on the scene. No charges were immediately filed. The Chevy Tahoe involved in the crash had racked up six speeding and one red light violation, according to although it wasn't clear if the 47-year-old driver was behind the wheel at those times. Wexler lives in Glen Oaks, Queens, and lived about four miles from where he died. Less than a day later, in Brooklyn, 42-year-old Rino El-Saieh was struck by a 2018 BMW at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday as he tried to make a left turn from E. 2nd St. onto Avenue P in Midwood, cops said. The 17-year-old BMW driver was heading west on Avenue P when he struck El-Saieh as he made the turn. The BMW veered out of control upon hitting the moped and slammed into a parked Ford van and a Hyundai Elantra, cops said. Medics rushed El-Saieh to Maimonides Medical Center, but he couldn't be saved. No other injuries were reported. The teen driver remained at the scene and hasn't been charged, cops said. El-Saieh lived in East New York, Brooklyn, officials said.

Driver broke man's leg in 'senseless violence'
A man who was doing wheel spins and handbrake turns in a residential area deliberately hit a pedestrian who came out of his home to see what was happening. Ashley Sherred, of Southampton Road in Salisbury, mounted the curb and hit the resident on 10 May, breaking the man's leg. The 33-year-old pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving at a court hearing on Thursday at Salisbury Crown Court. Trainee Det Con Dan Smith said: "This was a senseless act of violence that left the victim with significant injuries, and it could have been a lot worse." Sherred was remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing on 8 August. On the day of the incident, he was seen driving a blue Ford Fiesta erratically in Pinewood Close. He left the scene after hitting his victim, but was found by Wiltshire Police later that day and arrested. His car was found the following day. "I hope this guilty plea begins to bring some sense of closure to the victim and his family and that this sends a clear message that we will not tolerate this type of violence in Wiltshire," Trainee Det Con Smith added. Grosse Pointe teen to be sentenced for killing friend in 105 mph crash
A Grosse Pointe teenager with a history of excessive speeding is scheduled to be sentenced Friday, June 13 for killing his friend in a 105 mph vehicle crash that took the life of a stellar swimmer and college freshman, whose untimely and tragic death in 2023 continues to haunt and torment his family. Flynn MacKrell, 18, a Grosse Pointe freshman at the University of Dayton, was home for Thanksgiving break when a friend took him on a deadly joy ride down a residential street in Grosse Pointe Farms, hitting 105 mph in a BMW before losing control, hitting a pole and then a tree. MacKrell, who was a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Kiernan Tague, who was 16 at the time, managed to walk out of the vehicle after the crash, but was taken to a local hospital with multiple injuries. The BMW had split in half. According to police reports, cellphone exchanges and Life360 app records obtained by the Free Press, in the weeks and months before the Nov. 17, 2023, fatal crash, Tague hit speeds of 127 mph, 143 mph, 102 mph, 150 mph and 155 mph — all on separate days — and also engaged in drag racing. After the fatal crash, Tague initially was charged with second-degree murder, but accepted a deal with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office that ended with him pleading guilty last year to the lesser charge of vehicular manslaughter — a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Tague, though, has an adult designation, which means the judge has the option of sentencing him as an adult or a juvenile. The judge also could fashion a blended juvenile sentence, with the option of giving him an adult sentence if Tague is not rehabilitated over time. "If he gets to walk, that solidifies him as a criminal," the victim's mother, Anne Vanker, said on the eve of sentencing. "Time and time again in his life, he has not been held accountable — and now my son is dead .... no one should sit where I have sat for 18 months." Perhaps most frustrating for the victim's family is that the driver's mom knew for months that her son was driving at excessive speeds, and texted him to slow down. But she never revoked his driving privileges when he was speeding around metro Detroit in an Audi sports coupe. "Slow the f--- down!" the mother once texted her son, according to records obtained by the Free Press. "I have screen shots of you … doing 123 mph … It scares me to my bone." The victim's family also pushed for criminal charges to be filed against the driver's mother, though Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy declined their request, concluding the driver was the only one responsible for the tragedy that night, and that his mom did all she could to control her son. 'Parenting is hard in the best of circumstances," Worthy said in a statement after announcing her decision not to charge the mother. "Most parents do everything they can to mentor their children and steer them in the right direction. The juvenile respondent's mother was no different. She took consistent, active steps to try to make sure that he stayed on the right path." The driver's mom, Elizabeth Puleo-Tague, has denied numerous requests for comment. As for the driver, his attorney, Gabi Silver, said life will never be the same again for the now 18-year-old high school senior, and that the teen is "very remorseful" for causing the death of a childhood friend who grew up down the street from him. "He is so sorry and sad about what happened," Silver previously said to the Free Press. "That kid was his best friend … he spent most of his time over there. I don't think that he's ever going to be able to put this behind him." But living with guilt is not enough for the victim's family. They want Tague behind bars. "He needs to be in prison," Vanker has said. "He killed our son. Therapy is not enough. . … Now, sentence him appropriately, that's all I want." She stressed: "No one should ever, ever have to lose a child like this … I still can't believe my son — my big calm son — is gone." Tague's sentencing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center in Detroit.
