Michail Antonio scores TWICE in his first West Ham start since near-fatal Ferrari crash 'completely shattered' his leg seven months ago

Daily Mail26-07-2025
Michail Antonio scored twice in his first start for West Ham just seven months after a terrifying car crash left him needing surgery and fearing for his career.
Antonio escaped the incident with a badly broken leg and had his femur bone put back together after it was shattered in four places.
The forward had not featured in a match since crashing his Ferrari into a tree in December until he suited up for his national team last week.
The 35-year-old was back on the pitch for Jamaica's Gold Cup opener against Guatemala, coming off the bench in the 85th minute.
And on Friday night, Antonio took another step in his recovery, playing 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors West Ham Under 21 friendly against Boreham Wood.
It took him just 20 minutes to net a brace as the Hammers marched to a 4-1 victory.
He will be keen to prove his fitness with his West Ham contract, which is believed to be around £90,000 a week, coming to an end.
Antonio is currently weighing up his options after rejecting a short-term deal on lower wages.
'He's looking at what offers he gets,' a senior Hammers source recently told Mail Sport.
West Ham announced earlier this month they will continue to support Antonio throughout his comeback, even though he will officially been listed as a ' free transfer '.
West Ham announced earlier this month they will continue to support Antonio throughout his comeback, even though he will officially been listed
'Given Michail Antonio's unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate,' the statement read.
'However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer.
'As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the club's absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level.'
The West Ham record Premier League goal-scorer revisited his old car's remains at a scrapyard in March, which put the horror incident into perspective.
'It gave me a weird feeling in my stomach,' Antonio told BBC One programme Morning Live.
'It just made me realise how close I was to dying. I had seen the pictures, but it was 10 times worse in person. The car was an absolute mess. It was difficult for me.
'All I know is that I hit a tree - I don't know how I hit a tree - and that the police came and when they found me in the car, I was in between the two seats.
'From the crash, I've been more of an emotional man. I was avoiding going back because I was slightly embarrassed by the crash and the accident. Obviously I've almost died in the car crash.'
The accident was Antonio's second in a fast car after he crashed his £210,000 Lamborghini Huracan into a bin shed in Balham, south London, on Christmas Day 2019 while dressed as a snowman.

Aston Villa hopeful of completing the signing of Nice forward Evann Guessand - with the Ivory Coast star set to become Unai Emery's first major addition of the window

are working on the signing of Nice forward Evann Guessand and hope to complete a deal this week as they try to add extra competition to their attack. In what would be Villa's first significant move in the market this summer, Guessand would join Unai Emery 's men for about £28m. Villa have been looking for a new forward ever since Jhon Duran departed last January and seem to have settled on Guessand, who has been considered one of the most promising players in French football in recent seasons. He scored 13 goals and had 10 assists in all competitions last season and though he plays mainly through the middle, the 24-year-old can also operate on the flanks. Villa have insisted all summer that Ollie Watkins is not for sale but if they sign Guessand, it will be interesting to see whether clubs who admire Watkins make a serious move for him. Meanwhile, West Ham remain keen to sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa with the midfielder currently keeping his options open over his long-term future. Though Ramsey is well-regarded by Villa boss Unai Emery, his status as a homegrown player means an eventual transfer fee represents pure profit in the club accounts – crucial in the current era of Premier League spending rules. Villa have been willing to listen to offers for Ramsey since the transfer window opened and are thought to value him at about £40million.

Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace to sign striker Evann Guessand

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign striker Evann Guessand from Nice for an initial €25m (£22m). The 24-year-old is due to travel to Birmingham on Wednesday for a medical and to finalise a five-year contract with Villa who have beaten off competition from other Premier League clubs. Villa faced competition on Tuesday from Crystal Palace and quickly agree the deal for Guessand who with his dynamism and desire to cover distance has been likened in style to Morgan Rogers. Villa do not regard him as a replacement for the England international who has attracted interest from Arsenal and who they want to keep and offer a new contract. Guessand will be Villa's biggest signing of the summer so far. The total transfer fee for Guessand could be closer to €35m (£30m) when all the potential add-ons for the Cote d'Ivoire international are included. Telegraph Sport highlighted in May how in demand Guessand would be this summer having set his heart on a move to the Premier League. Guessand, who has been likened to his hero Didier Drogba, was the second highest-rated forward in French football last season behind Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele who has been tipped to win the Ballon D'Or. Villa showed interest in signing Guessand in January before they agreed a loan deal for Marcus Rashford and they have now returned and agreed a deal with Nice who were resigned to losing him this summer once their valuation was met. Speaking after the final game of the Ligue 1 season in May, Nice head coach Franck Haise was pessimistic about the club's chances of retaining Guessand. In July he said there was a '90 per cent' chance the player would leave. Guessand has also drawn interest from a host of other clubs including Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United but Villa have made their move and he has chosen to join them. Guessand turned down a move to Saudi Arabian club Neom FC as he made it clear he wanted to pursue his career in England. There was also strong interest from Bundesliga clubs. Guessand, who was born in Ajaccio and played for France at youth level before opting to switch to Ivory Coast, is strong and direct and has been likened to Drogba. There is a photograph of the two meeting, four years ago in the Ivorian city of Abidjan, where they had dinner together and they have stayed in touch ever since.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on brink of Besiktas transfer exit with Leeds among possible destinations for ex-England star

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN looks set to finally get his move away from Besiktas. The former England midfielder has been locked in talks with the Turkish club over becoming a free agent for the last month. 3 3 And finally, it looks as though Oxlade-Chamberlain, 31, who has still been training with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team in Istanbul, could be able to leave in the next few days. He left Liverpool in 2023 and the contract with Besiktas was due to run until 2026. But he has struggled with form and fitness. Oxlade-Chamberlain managed just five goals and one assist in 50 appearances with Besiktas. And the former Arenal and Southampton man is now hoping to get a return to the Premier League. Leeds is one possible destination for the midfielder, who has been blighted by injury over the years. Sources told SunSport Oxlade-Chamberlain fell out of favour in the eyes of former Manchester United hitman and manager Solskjaer ahead of the coming season. The same sources claim Besiktas initially wanted to pay the midfielder's severance package in instalments. 3 Oxlade-Chamberlain, however, refused to accept the proposed terms. That refusal paved the way for a crunch meeting between the Ox and Besikitas chiefs. And it's ultimately resulted in the club deciding to pay his exit fee in full.
