Middle East latest: White House admits strikes in Gaza and Syria caught Trump 'off guard' - as he warns Iran
Security forces were seen near the town of Busra al Harir in the Daraa countryside to prevent tribal forces from advancing towards the Druze villages yesterday.
The country's armed Bedouin clans announced that they had withdrawn from the Druze-majority city of Sweida after week-long clashes and a US-brokered ceasefire on Sunday.
The clashes between militias of the Druze religious minority and the Sunni Muslim clans killed hundreds and threatened to unravel Syria's already fragile post-war transition.
Israel also launched dozens of airstrikes in the Druze-majority Sweida province, targeting government forces who had effectively sided with the Bedouins.
The clashes also led to a series of targeted sectarian attacks against the Druze community, followed by revenge attacks against the Bedouins.
Yesterday, hundreds of Bedouin civilians were evacuated from Sweida as part of the truce, according to state media.

The sweeping 'reciprocal' levies announced by the White House a week ago – just before a previous 1 August deadline was due to elapse – were in place as of a minute past midnight Washington time on Thursday. Key details of Trump's latest tariffs include: The rates range from 41% on Syria, 40% on Laos and Myanmar and 39% on Switzerland to 10% for the UK. The levies will be on top of the usual tariffs applying to US-bound goods. Brazil's 'reciprocal' rate is 10%, for example, but its total levy is 50% after Trump added a 40% levy over the prosecution of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. India's 25% tariff rate could rise to a total of 50% after Trump imposed an additional charge for buying oil from Russia. The European Union is the only US trading partner where its baseline rate – set at 15% after a framework deal – will include previous tariffs. Seven hours is a long time in US politics. At 10am, Donald Trump accused Russia of posing a threat to America's national security. By 5pm, Mr Trump said there was a "good prospect" of him meeting Vladimir Putin"soon". There had, he claimed, been "great progress" in talks between his special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Russian president. It's difficult to gauge the chances of a meeting between the two leaders without knowing what "great progress" means. Is Russia "inclined" towards agreeing a ceasefire, as Ukraine's president now claims? Is Mr Putin prepared to meet with his Ukrainian foe, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, too? The very fact that we're asking those questions suggests something shifted on a day when there was no expectation of a breakthrough.
