French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected plans for a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of an international summit slated for next month.
According to a report by the Economic Times, Yunus was all set to fly down to France to attend the Third United Nations Ocean Conference to be held next month after Dhaka requested for a bilateral meeting between Macron and Yunus.
France, however, refused the proposal, following which Yunus had to cancel his trip to the country, in a development that is being seen as a setback to the interim government's global outreach.

The conference will be in Nice from June 9, and the French president has planned to host the participants for dinner the day before.
Why did France cancel the meeting?
Sources in Dhaka told the news outlet that after receiving an invitation from France, Bangladesh actively sought to organise a bilateral meeting between President Macron and Yunus.
However, French officials conveyed that numerous countries attending the conference had already requested bilateral meetings, leaving no room to accommodate an additional one.
France has reportedly said that it does not want to hold bilateral meetings during the summit and is keen on Yunus attending the ocean meet.
France was interested in understanding the specific objectives of the proposed bilateral meeting and was not in favour of holding it merely for formality. Although Bangladesh had previously shown interest in purchasing civilian aircraft from France, there has been no significant progress on that front.
Yunus' global outreach
Yunus has been trying to snag meetings with prominent leaders from across the world to consolidate Bangladesh's position as the situation in the country took a turn for the worse following the dismissal of Sheikh Hasina's government.
Last month, Yunus met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit in Bangkok. This was the first time PM Modi met Yunus.

It was decided that we should conclude a good Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year. Considering the relations that I have built with my counterpart, the European Union Trade Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, I feel that we will progress very fast and take it forward soon. There is enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement with India, and from the feedback we get from the industry in India, it seems India will also benefit from this,' Goyal said, adding that when both will benefit, it is natural that it is our responsibility to do it quickly. Earlier, while speaking to the media in Paris, Goyal also expressed gratitude towards France for its support following the terror attack in Pahalgam. 'India is very grateful to France for the strong support and solidarity expressed when there was a terror strike at Pahalgam. Goyal is on his three-day official visit to Paris as part of his ongoing visit to France and Italy from 1-5 June 2025. Goyal highlighted the strong understanding between India and France on counter-terrorism efforts. 'The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India,' he stated. 'The French Senate delegation that visited India fully supported India's stand and gave us confidence that the world stands with India when we are fighting against terrorism in all forms, whether state-sponsored or non-state actors,' Goyal said. The April 22 attack, carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, is one of the deadliest in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama strike in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. The minister drew parallels between both countries' experiences with terrorism, referencing the devastating 2015 Paris attacks that killed approximately 125 people just days before the COP21 climate summit. Haryana to introduce French in Sanskriti Model Schools
Gurgaon: The department of school education, Haryana, has announced a collaboration with the Embassy of France in India to introduce French as a foreign language in district Sanskriti Model Schools across the state starting from the upcoming academic session. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was between the school of education department, Panchkula and the French govt. This initiative is part of the Haryana-France language collaboration project and aligns with the vision of the national education policy (NEP) 2020. Regular TGT-English and PGT-English teachers currently serving in govt schools of Haryana are invited to participate. Prior exposure to French is preferred and selected teachers will receive a fully sponsored 6-month training in Institut Francais in India, located in New Delhi and will be deployed in district Sanskriti Model Schools to introduce French as a third language. A SCERT Haryana official said the move aims to compete with private schools. While the May 22, 2025 letter is confirmed, it hasn't been processed internally yet, leaving details like French teachers unclear. The directorate of school education has shared the information and nomination forms with SCERT Gurgaon, DIET principals, and district officers, asking them to inform eligible teachers before the deadline.
