Kraken sign forward Kaapo Kakko to three-year contract
The Kraken acquired the 24-year-old Kakko from the New York Rangers on Dec. 18 in exchange for defenseman Will Borgen, a 2025 third-round pick and a 2025 sixth-round pick. The Finland native was the No. 2 overall pick by the Rangers in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Kakko had a career-high 44 points with 14 goals and 30 assists in 79 games with the Rangers and Kraken last season. His 30 assists were also a career-best.
'Getting a contract done with Kaapo was a top priority this summer,' general manager Jason Botterill said in a statement. 'We knew quickly he'd be a big part of our team moving forward. He's got size, skill and tremendous playmaking ability, and isn't afraid of going to the net. He fit in immediately with our group, and we're thrilled to have him under contract.'
With the Kraken, he had 10 goals and 20 assists in 49 games. He also tied his career-high for points in a game with three assists in Seattle's 4-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 18. Kakko was tied for second in points, third in assists and power-play goals, and sixth in goals for Seattle.

Padres pushing for trade that involves the Athletics' Mason Miller
The MLB trade deadline is coming down to its final day, and A.J. Preller, the San Diego Padres, and team continue to stay active in trade talks. Multiple names have come out on Wednesday that the Padres have interest in. Players like the Cleveland Guardians' Steven Kwan, the Boston Red Sox's Jarren Duran, and many others. Kwan and Duran have been names that have been floating around in trade talks all week, but a new name has been discovered by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. According to the MLB insider, the Padres are starting to pursue a trade involving the Athletics' closing pitcher, Mason Miller. With the success that Miller has found in a short time in the big leagues, it would cost a lot for San Diego to land him. Miller, 26, was an All-Star and was named to the All-MLB Second Team last season, finishing with a 2-2 record, 2.49 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 28 saves, and 104 strikeouts in 65 innings. This year, he's had more down games than last, but he's still managed to have a 3.76 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 20 saves, and 59 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. The Athletics' closer is currently playing on a contract that has him earning $765,000 in 2025, but he is under team control for another four years. If the Padres want to trade for Miller, Ken Rosenthal believes that San Diego is going to have to part ways with their two top prospects in their farm system, shortstop Leo De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas, to make a big move before Thursday's deadline.

Messi's last-second assist lifts Inter Miami over Atlas 2-1 in Leagues Cup
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi had two assists, including one in the final seconds of the match, to help lift Inter Miami over Atlas 2-1 in their Leagues Cup opener on Wednesday night. It was Messi's first game back since he and teammate Jordi Alba were suspended one match by Major League Soccer for skipping its All-Star game. He connected with Marcelo Weigandt for the winning score in the final minute of stoppage time. Messi also assisted on Telasco Segovia's goal that opened scoring in the 58th. Rivaldo Lozano scored the equalizer for the Guadalajara club in the 82nd before Weigandt's goal in the 96th that had to be confirmed by VAR after he was originally ruled offside. That meant five assists in July for Messi, who was named the Major League Soccer Player of the Month after netting eight goals and helping Miami go 4-1-1 in league play. Both sides had their chances during a chippy first half, though neither was able to finish. Miami goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo had three saves in the first half, including one in which he slid over to deny Eduardo Aguirre on a header to the back post. Luis Suárez blasted a shot off the crossbar on the final play of the first half. Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul made his Inter Miami debut. De Paul, Messi's national team buddy, officially signed with the club last week. ___ AP soccer:

Liberty star Breanna Stewart has bone bruise in her right knee and is out indefinitely
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee and the team has no timetable for her return, coach Sandy Brondello said Wednesday. 'We want to make sure she's right for the playoffs,' Brondello said before the Liberty played the Minnesota Lynx in a WNBA Finals rematch. 'But hopefully, we can get her back sooner than that.' A two-time WNBA MVP, Stewart was hurt early in the Liberty's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night. She had three points and a rebound. Stewart seemed to injure the leg while running up the court and exited about 3 1/2 minutes into the game. She went to the locker room and never returned to the bench. A seven-time All-Star, Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists. New York owned the second-best record in the WNBA at 17-8 entering Wednesday's matchup and trailed the Lynx by four games. ___ AP WNBA:
