At least 44 killed in attacks in Nigeria's Benue state, says local official
At least 44 people have been killed in separate attacks in recent days in central Nigeria, a local government official said Tuesday (May 27, 2025), raising the toll in the latest raids in a region where herders and farmers often clash.
The attacks occurred in three villages between Friday and Monday, the chairman of the Gwer West local government area of Benue state, Ormin Torsar Victor, told AFP.
Motives for the violence were not clear, but Mr. Victor blamed the 'coordinated attacks' on Fulani cattle herders.
Muslim ethnic Fulani nomadic herders have long clashed with settled farmers, many of whom are Christian, in Benue over access to land and resources.
'As of today morning I passed through Aondona, they were mentioning 14 bodies that have been recovered, including a pregnant woman and a boy of two,' he told AFP, adding that 30 others were killed in Ahume.
'Yesterday evening one person was killed, the number keeps increasing by the day. Even now I think some corpses have not yet been discovered,' he said, calling the attacks 'systematic'.
The victims were either shot or stabbed, he said.
He said the 'pregnant woman was macheted' while the two-year-old boy was 'mutilated'. A Catholic priest was shot and wounded while driving along the Markudi-Naka road, the church and the local government official said. They shot him and left him there thinking he was dead,' said M.r Victor, adding that two passengers that were with him were 'abducted.
In a call for prayers for the wounded priest posted on Facebook, the church said he was shot by 'suspected terrorist herdsmen'.
'Coordinated attacks'
A resident of Aondona, Ruthie Dan Sam, told AFP late on Monday that '20 people were killed here in Aondona'. 'Children of less than two are being killed. The worst sight is a baby macheted on its mouth,' she said.
She added that other people had been killed in neighbouring villages, but said she had no figures.
Mr. Victor said he and other locals had buried five people, including a father and two of his sons killed in the village of Tewa Biana 'very close to a military base'.
Benue state police spokesperson Anene Sewuese Catherine confirmed two attacks in the area but said her office had received 'no report of 20 people' killed.
She said that one raid resulted in the death of a policeman who had 'repelled an attack' and that 'three dead bodies were discovered'.
The attacks in Nigeria's so-called Middle Belt often take on a religious or ethnic dimension.
Benue has been one of the states hit hardest by such violence between nomadic herders and farmers who blame herdsmen for destroying farmland with their cattle grazing.

Permission for any new traditions related to sacrifice was denied, while a strict ban on the sacrifice of prohibited animals was enforced. Furthermore, coordination was established with municipal corporations and other departments for the proper disposal of remains after sacrifice. The police catalogued all Eid-ul-Azha events and hotspots. Additional police, PAC , and Home Guard forces were strategically deployed under gazetted officers within zones or sectors. Similarly, in Sambhal and Bareilly, the Eid-ul-Azha namaaz was held peacefully amid heavy police deployment. "We had a peace committee meeting for Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone agreed to not sacrifice in public places. We have set up a three-tier security system and we spoke to maulanas, muftis, and representatives of mosques. There was an agreement to not sacrifice animals at public places and 19 designated places were agreed upon for sacrifice," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told reporters at the Eidgah. In Amethi, prayers were conducted at 367 mosques and Eidgahs, with different timings established to ensure peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik assured that people were celebrating the festival with great joy while maintaining peace.

What the complaint said Sunny, a member of Gau Raksha Dal and resident of Tauru's Ward No. 8, and his companion Monu lodged a complaint with the police on the basis of a 'tip-off' they had allegedly received. According to the complaint, the father-son duo allegedly sold beef. They would transport cow meat on their motorcycle and sell it near a hotel close to the mosque, it claimed, adding that they brought the meat to their shop Friday as well, unloaded it, and were in the process of selling, when they spotted the complainants. After this, they abandoned the meat, scales, weights, and other tools, and fled on their motorbike, the complaint said. Police went to the scene and recovered approximately 41 kilograms of suspected 'beef' packed in a plastic sack, along with a knife, scales, and other equipment. While it remains unclear whether the seized meat is indeed beef or meat of any other animal, the Gau Raksha Dal members claim they have concrete information confirming it as cow meat. The seized meat has been sent to a laboratory for testing, and further action will depend on the lab report, police said. A large crowd of locals gathered at the site, but the mob was dispersed and the situation is under control, according to police. The Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Haryana banned cow slaughter through the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015. It provides for rigorous imprisonment ranging from three years to 10 years for killing the animal. In his complaint, Sunny alleged the accused duo used to regularly supply beef to a hotel near Pataudi Chowk. Based on this, the Tauru City Police Station registered a case against Maamdeen and Nadeem under Sections 13(1), 13(3), and 17 of the act. Section 13(1) deals with the offence of cow slaughter and selling beef. It entails rigorous imprisonment not less than three years, which may extend to 10 years, and a fine not less than Rs 30,000, which may extend to Rs 1,00,000. Section 13(3) also deals with punishment for such offences. Section 17 outlines the legal procedure for taking cognisance of offences under the Act. The incident has sparked outrage among residents, especially given its timing—the occasion of Bakra-Eid—and raised concerns about potential tension in the area. The boy said that as soon as they reached the place, his teacher came into the room, locked the door, forcibly removed his pants and started assaulting him. 'I got on his motorbike and we left.
