Tahs hold off Brumbies, end long Super losing streak

Yahoo22-03-2025

The opportunistic NSW Waratahs have snapped a 13-match losing streak to the Brumbies with a dramatic 25-23 Super Rugby Pacific home win.
The Tahs scored 21 unanswered points to lead by 15 at halftime.
But the resilient Brumbies, who played with 14 men for a quarter of the game, got within three with just over 12 minutes left on Satuday night.
Max Jorgensen soothed the nerves of the home supporters in the 20,572 crowd, when he chipped ahead and then toed the ball forward, with centre Joey Walton winning the chase.
The anxiety returned within three minutes, as the never-say-die visitors hit back, with winger Andy Muirhead catching a crossfield kick from Jack Debreczeni following great work from Wallabies centre Len Ikitau.
The conversion cut the deficit to three, but the Waratahs held on to record their first victory over the Brumbies since 2018 and first over them at Allianz Stadium since 2015.
The win lifted the Sydney-based team above the side from the capital up to fourth on the ladder.
Brumbies five-eighth Noah Lolesio kicked two early penalties and the visitors enjoyed a barely believable 97 per cent of territory after 14 minutes.
But things unravelled from that time after a break in play caused by an injury to hooker Mahe Vailani, who was a late inclusion the starting side after Dave Porecki pulled out.
Shortly after play resumed the Waratahs scored a couple of long distance tries off turnovers against the run of play to tilt the match in their favour.
Halfback Teddy Wilson crossed after the Tahs moved the ball quickly down the left.
However, it appeared NSW fullback Andrew Kellaway might have touched the sideline early in the buildup, one of a few decisions that appeared to irk the Brumbies.
The visitors were punished for another turnover, when winger Triston Reilly kicked the ball forward from close to halfway and regathered after a friendly bounce to score.
The Waratahs added a third try through flanker Rob Leota, who scooped up a bounce pass from Jorgensen and pushed off winger Andy Muirhead.

The Brumbies were down to 14 at the time with hooker Billy Pollard in the bin for a high tackle.
They started the second half well and appeared to have got five points back when fullback Tom Wright crossed after a 20-phase move.
But the score was rubbed out upon review with Lolesio judged to have knocked on in the leadup.
Undaunted by another setback the away side produced another multi-phase move with captain and prop Allan Alaalatoa barging over from close range.
They suffered another blow with flanker Tom Hooper binned for a dangerous lifting tackle in the 55th minute.
Flanker Luke Reimer crashed over from a trademark Brumbies drive from a lineout to keep them in touch and set up a thrilling finish.

Cooper Cronk calls out Lachie Galvin move that backfired on Bulldogs teammate

Cooper Cronk has highlighted how Lachie Galvin's presence on the field contributed to Nathan Cleary's match-winning try for the Panthers against the Bulldogs in Thursday night's NRL thriller. Galvin started on the bench but replaced Reed Mahoney with 28 minutes remaining. Dogs coach Cameron Ciraldo shuffled Galvin into the halves and moved Toby Sexton to hooker - a move that proved contentious and also backfired. The Bulldogs were leading 6-2 with Galvin on the bench, but the tide turned in the Panthers' favour when he was injected into the game. He let Cleary run straight past him just seconds after getting on the field - a line-break that seemed to swing the momentum towards the Panthers after the Bulldogs held the upper hand all night. In the very next set, Cleary produced a stunning play to charge down a Matt Burton kick before regathering and scoring what turned out to be the match-winning try. Speaking in commentary for Fox League, legendary halfback Cronk pointed out that Galvin being on the field made it easier for Cleary to produce his match-winning play. Because Galvin doesn't have as good a long-kicking game as Sexton, Cleary and the Panthers knew Burton would be kicking on the last. Rather than having to guess which side of the ruck the kick would come from, Cleary was 100 per cent it was going to Burton. "He is one of the smartest players in our game Nathan Cleary," Cronk said. "He realised Matt Burton is the No.1 kicker. Normally he does it with a pass or a kick, but this time he did it with his footy IQ. "The reason why he was able to isolate Matt Burton is when Galvin came onto the field, Burton becomes the main kicker out of their own end. It meant Cleary could get a head-start (on Burton) and pressure him." Speaking after the Panthers held on for an 8-6 win, Matty Johns also questioned why Ciraldo changed his spine in the middle of the game. "It's hard when you change a winning spine," he said. "They'll have to figure out what to do with Galvin moving forward." RELATED: Sam Burgess rejection could see Dolphins sign international star New club emerges to snare premiership-winning Panthers forward Despite the loss, Ciraldo was adamant it was the right call to inject Galvin. The 19-year-old looked likely whenever he touched the ball, but the Dogs weren't as polished as when Sexton was pulling the strings. "I thought it worked pretty well tonight," Ciraldo said in his press conference. "I like how it is working at the moment. Reed rips in, gets his work done, works himself to a standstill. "Toby going in there and shoring up the ruck and providing good service. And then Lachy comes on and can ask really good questions, which he did. I'm very happy with how it's going at the moment, don't see any reason to change it." But fans and pundits were quick to highlight how the game changed when Galvin came on. Daily Telegraph columnist 'The Oracle' wrote on social media: "Mahoney was playing well at dummy half and Sexton controlling things beautifully at 7. Galvin will undoubtedly be an asset in the future, but you can't tell me this isn't an unwanted disruption to a side coming first. They look clunky." Mahoney was playing well at dummy half & Sexton controlling things beautifully at will undoubtedly be an asset in the future , but you can't tell me this isn't an unwanted disruption to a side coming first. They look clunky. — The Oracle (@BigOtrivia) June 26, 2025 Am I alone in thinking the Dogs look worse with Galvin? — Ron (@ronstradamus1) June 26, 2025 I don't understand who Galvin thought Cleary was passing too 😂 — yeamannnn (@AMaoulaoui) June 26, 2025 Those Galvin "shifts" lost Canterbury the game. I have no idea what Gus or Matthew Johns or others have seen, but Galvin runs out of time so quickly, he plugs in the field and puts others under pressure. Like Burton late when he lost the ball #NRLPanthersBulldogs — Curtis Woodward (@woodward_curtis) June 26, 2025 Dogs have to bite the bullet & do whatever their plan is with Galvin now - not sure changing half your spine mid game every week is sustainable, there was a noticeable disruption to their flow & shape when he came on. #NRLPanthersBulldogs — Nathan (@SeaEagleSpur) June 26, 2025

Mussolini Returns to Rome

SS Lazio, the Rome-based soccer club, has re-signed 22-year-old Romano Floriani Mussolini, bringing one of Italy's most infamous surnames back to the capital. The move means a return by the great-grandson of Benito Mussolini to a club whose supporters have a reputation for links to far-right politics. For example, "ultra" fans unfurled a banner reading "Honor to Benito Mussolini" ahead of a 2019 match in Milan. Mussolini is son of former European Parliament member Alessandra Mussolini and great-grandson of the man who was the dictator of Facist Italy from 1922 until 1943, when he was overthrown. The 22-year-old's last season was at second-tier Juve Stabia, where he made 37 appearances, produced four assists, and scored once, a goal that made headlines when fans reportedly responded with fascist salutes from the stands, yelling "Mussolini." "Probably nobody expected to ever witness this in an Italian stadium," daily newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano wrote at the time. "This is not some dystopic future and was not generated by AI, it's real and has been seen around the world." Juve Stabia denied its fans had made fascist salutes. "We do not accept exploitation for a golden boy like Romano Floriani Mussolini and the same thing goes for our fans who have cheered as they have always done in the past with any other athlete," Juve Stabia said in a statement at the time. The club exercised its option to buy Mussolini, but Lazio retained a counter-option allowing the team to buy him back, the reported. Mussolini was in Lazio's youth ranks but has yet to make an appearance for the senior team. He has sought to separate his personal identity from his ancestry, telling sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport in 2021: "My great-grandfather, Benito, was a very important person for Italy but we are in 2024 and the world has changed." Benito Mussolini, himself a soccer fan, leveraged Italy's 1934 World Cup win to promote fascism globally, The Times reported. Juve Stabia said in a statement on its website: "SS Juve Stabia 1907 announces that it has exercised the option to buy the defender born in 2003, Romano Floriani Mussolini, who joined from SS Lazio in the terms set by federal regulations. "At the same time, and within the time limit, SS Lazio has exercised their counter-option to buy back the player, as set out in the agreements signed last season." Lazio play in Italy's top division, Serie A. Should Mussolini break into the first team he could play in the club's first fixture of the 2024/25 season against Como 1907 on August 24.
