Schools and council buildings to have £1m survey
Schools and council buildings will be subject to a £1m county-wide conditions survey.
Cumberland councillors were advised in a report to order a complete inspection of its properties in order to discover what state they are in and provide accurate valuations.
Councillor Barbara Cannon told a meeting there would also be specialist surveys carried out and they would be put out for tender.
Mark Fryer, leader of the authority, said: "This is an essential part of the council's forward plan and how we look after our properties and schools."
The report states the council requires "specialist surveys to schools assessing structural elements in particular build types and to provide Reinstatement Valuations for all Cumberland assets".
Cumberland Council was formed in April 2023 and took on a range of properties from former district councils which had carried out surveys at varying times, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
According to the report the council's corporate assets team now needs to understand the condition of all its buildings.

Pittsburgh Entrepreneurs Celebrate Grand Opening of British Swim School on June 22 to Meet Growing Demand for Swim Lessons
PITTSBURGH, June 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- British Swim School, North America's leading "learn to swim" provider, announced the opening of its newest location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Located at 2344 Wildwood Road in Gibsonia, British Swim School Pittsburgh invites families and community members to join its grand opening celebration on Sunday, June 22 from 1-4 p.m. The event will feature a raffle for a free month of swim lessons, food trucks, face painting, a fire truck visit, staff lifeguards available to oversee open swim time in the pool, facility tours and a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the occasion. British Swim School Pittsburgh is proudly owned and operated by Becky Grindle, Ryan Grindle and Traci Brown. Recognizing the need for greater access to swim lessons across all age groups, they are opening their newest British Swim School just as summer reaches its peak - a time when families and individuals visit lakes and pools to cool off. This marks the eighth location for the family- and women-led group, continuing their mission to promote water safety in the community. "We are thrilled to be celebrating the grand opening of our newest British Swim School in Pittsburgh," said Becky Grindle, franchise president of British Swim School Pittsburgh. "When we opened our first location in 2013, there were zero swim schools in the area, which made it clear how vital water safety education was for the community. Drowning can happen in less than 60 seconds if left unnoticed, and even the most experienced swimmers can face unexpected dangers in the water. That's why our commitment through British Swim School goes beyond just teaching swim strokes. We strive to build water safety awareness for individuals of all ages." For more than 40 years, British Swim School has been committed to drowning prevention. Most recently, it became the first full swim school franchise to partner with Stop Drowning Now, a nonprofit dedicated to saving lives through water safety education. The new British Swim School Pittsburgh location is open and operating Tuesdays from 4-8 p.m., Fridays from 4-7 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. -12 p.m., with expanded programming coming soon! Tesla stock higher on robotaxi momentum, Musk-Trump feud cooling
Tesla (TSLA) stock is charging higher for a third trading session in a row as the company's robotaxi rollout gains steam — and the war between CEO Elon Musk and President Trump cools off. On Monday night, Tesla was listed as an autonomous vehicle (AV) operator on Austin's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website, ahead of the reported June 12th targeted start of Tesla's robotaxi service. The news was first picked up by Tesla blog Teslarati. Tesla stock up about 2% in early trade, poised for third straight up session. Tesla was listed with Alphabet's Waymo, Amazon's Zoox, Hyundai's Motional, and a few others on the current list of AV operator in Austin, Though Tesla's June 12th start date isn't official, and the company could delay the start due to other circumstances, Tesla's listing on the DMV site is seen as a positive momentum for the start to begin imminently. Tesla will begin its unsupervised robotaxi testing with around 10 to 20 robotaxis at first and will ramp up if testing goes smoothly. Tesla will use remote tele-operators in the event that a robotaxi has an incident or is stuck in a traffic situation, allowing human intervention when needed. While this is a welcome safety initiative, it may hinder any ramp-up Tesla's robotaxi fleet. Musk's closeness to Trump was seen as boon for its robotaxi ambitions, but the recent war of words between the two sank Tesla stock late last week, and it's only now recovering. Part of today's recovery in the stock came as Trump made some conciliatory comments about Musk and Tesla on Monday after the bell. 'I'd have no problem with it,' Trump said at White House event on Monday, when asked if he would be willing to speak with Musk. 'I'd imagine he wants to speak with me.' Trump also revealed he wasn't going to sell the Tesla Model S he bought in March, following the unprecedented event where Musk brought a fleet of Tesla EVs to the White House for Trump's perusal. Trump also said, when asked whether he knew Musk was taking drugs, that he really didn't know. 'I don't think so, I hope not,' Trump said. Pras Subramanian is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. Millennial Moms Are All Hiring House Managers---Should You?
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." At home, chores are truly never-ending. You'll always have to do laundry, buy groceries, clean dirty surfaces, restock essentials like toilet paper, and so on. The weekly tasks can become overwhelming and exhausting, especially if you have kids or a busy professional life. Enter: house managers. They're basically like a housekeeper, nanny, assistant, and chef all in one, with a job description that can flex depending on the needs of your household. If you're at a point where you could use relief from an ever-growing to-do list, here's what to know as you consider hiring a house manager. A house manager's role really depends on the specific needs of the family they work for, but generally, the work is wide-ranging. Kelly Hubbell, a house manager who also helps families hire house managers, gave insight into the job via a video on Instagram. 'Soooo… What does a house manager actually do each week? Short answer: more than you think,' she captioned the post. Hubbell confirmed that a house manager does many staple chores around the house, including laundry, errands (like grocery shopping or returns), meal preparation, dog walking, and packing school lunches. Some of the 'invisible stuff that eats up your time and energy,' she wrote, can include descaling the coffee machine, restocking diaper bags, oiling cutting boards, organizing toy bins, taking out the trash, swapping out seasonal clothes, babysitting on date nights, and restocking toiletries. That's only a portion of the things Hubbell said families would rather not do, and 'even more importantly, a hundred other things you'd rather not have to carry and feel responsible for remembering and delegating.' The job is also adaptable to a family's needs on a weekly basis. Some weeks, the job may involve handling the laundry. Other weeks, it can require helping pack for a trip, scheduling returns, or reorganizing the garage. 'It's not just getting things done; it's someone who knows what needs to be done, sometimes before you even ask,' Hubbell wrote. According to Barbara Mighdoll of the New Modern Mom blog, other house manager tasks can include schedule management, like making doctor appointments for kids, vendor coordination, such as hiring a maintenance worker or gardener, event planning for family gatherings or parties, and overseeing the household budget. Anyone with a busy household can benefit from a house manager, but they're especially useful for certain groups. Postpartum moms who want to focus on recovering and bonding with their baby will find them particularly useful, as will families with multiple children who need help with organizing schedules and keeping life running smoothly. For busy professionals, a house manager can make sure everything at home is in order, whether they work from home or at an office. House managers can also bring relief to individuals who are struggling with mental or physical health challenges and can't keep up with household maintenance. To determine if a house manager is right for you, think about your needs. If they're relatively singular, you can look for house manager alternatives. For instance, if you only need someone to focus on cleaning and home maintenance, consider hiring a housekeeper instead. If you only need help with child care, a nanny is a good option. You'll also want to consider your budget (more on that below), along with privacy in terms of how comfortable you are with having another person around the house. The cost of hiring a house manager can vary depending on where you live, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $40 per hour. According to Indeed, the average salary in the United States for a house manager is $61,757. There are plenty of ways to find a house manager. In a Reddit thread, many homeowners shared that they've had success with posting detailed ads on Home Team Hires, a domestic staffing platform, is another recommendation that was offered up for homeowners in major metropolitan areas, specifically in Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles.
