Delhi cop held for taking Rs 5K bribe to drop names from case
NEW DELHI: The vigilance unit of the Delhi Police arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted at the Govindpuri Police Station for allegedly accepting a bribe to remove names of a family from a criminal case, officials said on Wednesday. ASI Sushil Sharma was arrested along with a tea vendor who acted as his conduit in collecting the bribe, they said. The complainant, a daily wager residing in the Govindpuri area, had earlier paid Rs 5,000 to the ASI, who was investigating a case of quarrel and assault involving the complainant's family. 'When Sharma allegedly demanded another Rs 5,000 to remove their names from the probe, the man approached the vigilance unit,' the officials said. A trap was laid and the complainant, following Sharma's instructions, handed the bribe to a tea vendor near the police station. The vendor, in turn, delivered the tainted currency to Sharma inside the police station, when they were held.

Delhi: 1,100 illegal Bangladeshis deported since Jan
More than 1,100 Bangladeshi nationals have been deported from Delhi since January 2025, with nearly a third of these removals occurring over the past two weeks, senior police officers said on Wednesday. The deportations are part of an ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigrants ordered by Delhi lieutenant governor VK Saxena in December last year. Following the LG's directives, Delhi Police launched a sweeping verification drive that began in south and central districts. Between December and January, officers screened over 16,000 individuals. Those found residing in the Capital without valid documents were handed over to the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which then carried out deportation procedures, officials said. 'All police districts are undertaking intensive verification drives in identified zones,' said an officer, adding that the focus has been on slum settlements and other vulnerable pockets. The South district police alone deported 134 Bangladeshi nationals, including 38 women and 43 children, following a six-month-long operation. Deputy commissioner of police (south) Ankit Chauhan said enforcement was based on 'credible local intelligence' and targeted those overstaying visas or living without valid documents. 'We conducted 14 checks across Sangam Vihar, Fatehpur Beri, Lodhi Colony, and Maidan Garhi between December 2024 and June 2025,' he said. Multiple teams were actively visiting suspected pockets to verify identities through Aadhaar and voter ID cards. 'Our efforts remain focused on ensuring legality and public safety,' said Chauhan. Police teams verified identities using Aadhaar and voter ID cards and activated local informants to track down undocumented immigrants. Officials also mapped irregular entry points commonly used by migrants. In four cases, FIRs have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Foreigners Act, and the Aadhaar Act. Among the notable cases, five Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Sangam Vihar earlier this year, while eight were arrested in Lodhi Colony in March. In Maidan Garhi, one individual was also booked under the Arms Act. The outer district police detained 92 Bangladeshi nationals on Tuesday, including 22 women and 39 minors. 'A team deployed near Mangolpuri Railway Line spotted several groups carrying luggage and preparing to board trains. On seeing the police, they tried to flee, but our officers swiftly intercepted them,' said DCP (outer) Sachin Sharma. On June 1, the north-west district police detained 66 more Bangladeshi nationals, including 30 minors and 16 women, in similar enforcement action. Officials said the crackdown will continue in coordination with FRRO to ensure all those residing illegally in Delhi are identified and processed for deportation.

40-year-old trader shot dead in Noida Sector 12
Noida: A 40-year-old trader was shot dead in Sector 12, Noida, on Wednesday afternoon, police said, adding that multiple teams are working to apprehend the suspects and a case of murder has been registered at the Sector 24 police station. Police identified the deceased as Ompal Bhati, originally from Sikandarabad who resided in Sector 94 and was engaged in foreign exchange trading with an office in Sector 18. 'On Wednesday, around 1.30pm, Bhati visited the rented flat in W Block of Sector 12 to meet a man. During the meeting, he was shot in the chest and killed. As the landlord and locals heard the gunshot, the suspects managed to flee the scene,' said station house officer (Sector 24) Vidhyut Goel, adding that the motive of killing is yet to be known. During the investigation, it came to light that two men, one of whom identified himself as Pawan (single name) — had approached the owner of the two-storey house in Sector 12 on Tuesday inquiring about an accommodation available on rent. After visiting the property, they left. But they returned on Wednesday morning. 'They finalised the deal to rent the flat and paid ₹1,000 as token money. When the landlord asked for an Aadhaar card and other identification, they assured him they would submit the documents by evening and took the keys for cleaning the flat,' the SHO added. In the afternoon, while cleaning the flat the two suspects called Bhati to discuss something important. During the conversation, one of the suspects allegedly shot him and fled, said an officer, speaking on condition of anonymity. While fleeing, their Delhi-registered motorcycle didn't start and thus they left it behind. 'They simply walked away after locals began converging,' the officer added. Locals alleged that Bhati carried a bag full of cash and it was taken away by the suspects. Deputy commissioner of police Yamuna Prasad, however, nullified it, saying: 'During the investigation, Bhati's wife confirmed that he did not leave home with any cash. His family, which is also into the foreign exchange business, said he would never visit anyone's flat without gaining their trust.' 'It was also revealed by the family that the two had even previously visited Bhati's residence. They were known to each other,' the DCP added. A case of murder has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Sector 24 police station. Efforts are underway to arrest the suspects, said officers.
