Apple picks Alibaba to launch AI features in China

CNN17-02-2025

Apple will work with Chinese tech giant Alibaba to roll out AI services in the world's biggest market for mobile phones, in a move that removes months of uncertainty for the Cupertino-based firm.
'Apple has been very selective. They talked to a number of companies in China, and in the end, they choose to do business with us. They want to use our AI to power their phones,' Joe Tsai, chairman of Alibaba, said on Thursday during a speech at the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
He did not provide further details like a timeline for the release or whether Alibaba will be the exclusive partner.
News of the partnership was first reported by The Information. It said Apple also considered other Chinese AI firms like DeepSeek, Baidu, ByteDance and Tencent before ultimately selecting Alibaba.
CNN has reached out to Apple and Alibaba for further comment.
Due to local compliance issues and regulatory concerns, Apple has so far only been able to release its AI service, Apple Intelligence, to limited markets, including the US, Canda, UK and Australia. The Chinese government mandates that foreign AI operators need to partner with a local company and obtain regulatory approval.
Apple has been losing market share in China to domestic rivals such as Huawei and Vivo. Lucas Zhong, research analyst at Canalys, a market research firm, said while AI services are expected to help Apple gain users in China, challenges remain.
'Apple faces a much more challenging competitive landscape in China, especially amid Huawei's strong resurgence. Relying solely on AI services may not be enough to turn the tide,' he said.
Apple had dominated China's high-end smartphone market for years before Huawei rose through the ranks and began posing a credible challenge. But in 2019, US President Donald Trump moved to impose trade restrictions on Huawei.
Initially, those curbs hit Huawei's business hard. But eventually, they incentivized Huawei to adapt and innovate, which culminated at the launch of Mate 60 Pro in 2023 that triggered an US government's investigation. Huawei's transformation, coupled with strong patriotic sentiment among some Chinese people, has powered its rise.
Last year, Huawei, posted a market share of 16% in China, overtaking Apple's 15%, according to Canalys data. In 2023, Apple was the top mobile phone seller in the country with 19% of market share. Huawei trailed behind at 12%.
The confirmed partnership with Apple has boosted investors' confidence in Alibaba. Its Hong Kong-listed shares has surged by more than 40% since hitting a two-year low in January.
Shortly after Chinese startup DeepSeek unveiled an AI model in January that stunned Wall Street, Alibaba unveiled its latest version of its Qwen AI model, saying it was better than its competitor's R1 model.
Speaking at the same event on Thursday via video, Elon Musk, said the next generation of his company xAI's large language model, Grok 3, would be released in one to two weeks, touting it as the best AI chatbot on the market.
'In the tests that we've done thus far, Grok 3 is outperforming anything that's been released, that we're aware of,' the tech mogul said.
Musk founded xAI with the goal of challenging OpenAI, the company he co-founded, as well as other AI giants like Google.

How to watch Apple's WWDC 2025 keynote address

Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Monday marks the start of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. Apple kicks things things off with its keynote announcement at 1pm ET. The company is streaming the keynote on YouTube, and you can watch right here. This Monday, June 9, Apple is getting set to make some of its biggest announcements of the year. We're only a few weeks removed from Google's own I/O 2025, and now Silicon Valley is getting ready for its next big platform event of the summer. Whether you're an Apple die-hard, or just an Android stan who wants to stay on top of what the other side's up to, tech fans everywhere are going to be interested in tuning in. Let's check out how you can watch! Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is a week-long event that runs June 9–13. And to kick things off in proper fashion, Apple will get things started with its keynote announcement at 1pm ET. For as nice as it might sound to be hanging out at Apple Park for the news, most of us will have to settle for the livestream, which we've embedded here for your viewing pleasure. One of the bigger announcements we're expecting from Apple this year could involve a wide-reaching rebranding of its software platforms, updating the sequential numbering it's been using for operating system releases to instead reflect a calendar year — basically just like what Samsung did in 2020 when it jumped from the Galaxy S10 to S20 series. Instead of iOS 19, that means Apple's next edition would be iOS 26. Rumors have also identified a few other topics likely to be in the spotlight on Monday. Beyond the big rebranding, we could also see a visual overhaul of the company's design language, not unlike some of what Google's up to with Material 3 Expressive. That may include some significant updates to core iOS apps. Reports have been a little shaky on just what sort of emphasis we can expect to see on Apple Intelligence, but you can sure expect that AI is going to be making its influence felt across much of what the company has to show off this week. Check back here at 1pm ET on Monday to stream the keynote along with us and get the full story on everything new coming to Apple's ecosystem. Got a tip? Talk to us! Developer seeks flexibility for design of affordable housing project

Jun. 8—ROCHESTER — A Santa Monica, California, developer is seeking support for deviating from Rochester development code standards to construct a 149-unit apartment complex along Fourth Street Southeast, just east of the Bear Creek Bridge. Lincoln Avenue Communities is proposing a 360-foot-long building, with a decreased rear setback along the river trail south of the site. The proposal exceeds length standards by 60 feet. "The length of this new building should not have any adverse impact on any abutting lots," Scott England, a principal with Minneapolis-based DJR Architecture, stated in a letter with Lincoln Avenue. "The building's length is broken up by multiple vertical architectural components that visually provide for pleasing visual breaks in the façade." Staff from the Rochester Community Development department are supporting the request, pointing to the ability to add downtown-adjacent parking with infill development across five lots, as well as efforts to provide an active use for the site that sits on a transit corridor. "The applicant has worked closely with city teammates to ensure compliance with the unified development code and district design standards," Rochester planner Elliot Mohler stated in a report to the Planning and Zoning Commission. "This includes street activation strategies such as benches, raised planters, additional plantings and bike parking." Lincoln Avenue Communities, which specializes in constructing and managing housing with rents below market rate, plans to lease apartments at rates considered affordable for households earning 60% of the area median income. "For a single parent with a few kids, this equates to $60,000 to $70,000 per year for income to qualify for housing, so it really is true workforce housing," Sarah Robbins, an associate with Lincoln Avenue Communities, told neighbors in April during a required informational meeting. Current state guidelines would cap potential rents at nearly $1,700 for a two-bedroom apartment under the tax credit program Lincoln Avenue seeks to utilize. The project is slated to feature 41 one-bedroom apartments, 77 two-bedroom units and 31 three-bedroom apartments, as well as one level of underground parking. While a site consolidation and a development plan for the project remain under review, the Planning and Zoning Commission will be asked to determine whether the construction variance will be allowed. Before making a decision, a public hearing on the issue will be held during the commission's meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers of the city-county Government Center. If development plans are approved, the apartment complex could be added to more than 150 Lincoln Avenue Communities properties throughout the nation. Company Vice President James Riley said the goal for the company's first Rochester project is to start construction in early 2026, if required development and financing approvals are obtained. Meetings scheduled to be held during the week of June 9 include: Rochester —City Council study session, 3:30 p.m. Monday in council chambers of the city-county Government Center, 151 Fourth St. SE. The meeting will livestream at and be available on Spectrum cable channel 180 or 188. —Police Policy Oversight Commission, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in room 164B of the Development Services and Infrastructure Center, 4001 West River Parkway NW. —Sustainability and Resiliency Commission, 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 104 of City Hall, 201 Fourth St. SE. —Planning and Zoning Commission, 5 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers of the Government Center. —Citizens Advisory on Transit, 4:30 p.m. Thursday in room 104 of City Hall.
