PETALING JAYA: Kenanga Research is slashing its forecasts for Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd 's (BPHB) net profit for this year and next year.
The research house said it is cutting its forecast net profit for both years by 23%, taking into account weaker-than-expected liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo volume due to difficulties at the LNG complex, following a scheduled maintenance shutdown in the second quarter of this year (2Q25).
'BPHB's 1Q25 results came in below expectations at 19% of our full-year forecast, and 18% of consensus' full-year estimates. The key variance was due to the weaker-than-expected LNG cargo volume due to technical difficulties at the Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG) complex,' the research house said
However, the research house said it continues to like BPHB for its steady income stream from handling LNG cargoes for MLNG and maintained its 'market perform' call on BPHB.

19% tariff rate a positive for PIE

Kenanga Research said the group is eyeing an upcoming order cycle potentially in 4Q25. PETALING JAYA: PIE Industrial Bhd , which has posted weak second-quarter (2Q25) results due to the impact of the trade diversion and US tariffs, hopes to be able to recover its lost businesses eventually. However, the outlook is challenging at the moment as the company was affected in 2Q25 due to a customer (Customer A) having preemptively diversified production to Indonesia in anticipation of potential tariff adjustments, notably since Indonesia secured a lower tariff rate of 19% ahead of Malaysia. Kenanga Research said without this impact, PIE's net profit for the first half of 2025 (1H25) would have been at approximately 38% of its full-year forecast compared to 31% currently. That said, recovery could be imminent, given that Malaysia has now also secured a 19% tariff rate. According to Kenanga Research, the group is eyeing an upcoming order cycle potentially in 4Q25 and aims to capture around one-third of the expected allocation. 'We believe the company can regain lost market share in upcoming orders, given no discernible tariff difference among countries. Additionally, while Customer A plans to establish a US manufacturing facility, management sees the higher cost as commercially unviable and expects continued reliance on Asian vendors for assembly,' it said. Meanwhile Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB) said PIE is now negotiating to reclaim the lost volumes from this particular customer, with the earliest recovery expected only by 4Q25. The group shared in an analyst briefing that prior to the tariff regime, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand each accounted for roughly one-third of Customer A's volume. However, Kenanga Research also notes that for now, the volumes that have already been reallocated are difficult to immediately recover from the same customer on entrenched material and resource commitments. 'PIE is still in ongoing discussions with several prospective customers exploring trade diversion opportunities from China and Vietnam. Progress was previously hampered by Malaysia's higher 25% tariff versus most competing regions. 'With the tariff now reduced to 19%, in line with neighbouring countries, talks have resumed, though the onboarding timeline remains uncertain according to management,' Maybank IB said. The research outfit retained its 'hold' rating and target price of RM3.56 for PIE, which is based on a 17 times the financial year 2026 (FY26) forecast price-to-earnings ratio (PER). Kenanga Research held its 'market perform' rating and lowered its target price to RM3.85 from RM4.60 previously, based on a rolled-forward FY26 forecast valuation base and an unchanged PER of 21.6 times.

Challenges expected for oil and gas sector

MBSB Research maintained its 'neutral' call on the sector. PETALING JAYA: The oil and gas sector is currently in a state of equilibrium, according to MBSB Research. The research house said the sector is facing lower commodity prices, reduced capital spending and a challenging services market. However, at the same time, there are positive factors too, it added. These include the resilience of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), stable midstream demand, and a more positive long-term outlook. 'The sector is not expected to see a significant surge in earnings or valuations in the near term and is highly likely to be focused on selective segments,' MBSB Research said. However, the research house said it believes the sector also has strong foundational elements that prevent a major collapse. This ensures that it will perform broadly in line with the wider market, with limited short-term catalysts, barring any events that would warrant a spike in oil and gas prices and further sustain the surge. The research house maintained its 'neutral' call on the sector, its top pick being MISC Bhd with a 'buy' call and a target price of RM8.13. 'We favour MISC for its strong business model built on stability and long-term growth, effectively insulating it from the volatility impacting other segments. 'MISC's core revenue comes from long-term contracts for its LNG carriers and offshore assets, providing predictable earnings,' MBSB Research added. It highlighted that the company is also strategically aligned with the resilient natural gas market and the global energy transition, as evidenced by its robust LNG carrier fleet and its involvement in next-generation technologies like liquefied carbon dioxide carriers. 'This combination of stable cash flows, exposure to growth sectors, and a defensive posture against short-term market fluctuations makes it a compelling company to look into, amid the uncertainties and headwinds plaguing the sector,' the research house noted. On the outlook of the sector, MBSB Research said it believes the downward pressure on oil prices will continue. 'The global oil supply is expected to remain positive in August, driven by the continuous unwinding of the voluntary production cuts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) and the sustained production growth from non-Opec countries, notably Brazil and the United States,' the research house said. It also cautioned about the rise in global oil inventories, mostly in China, ahead of the full impact of the US trade tariffs on the industrial sector around the world. 'This signals that the market may be well-supplied in the coming months. Additionally, demand growth has been projected to slow due to uncertainty in the economy and the rapid shifts to cleaner energy,' it said. The research house said it expects Brent crude to average around US$67 per barrel in August. 'We still maintain vigilance on the geopolitical risks that could cause sudden price spikes, as well as any further Opec decisions on supply cuts,' it added. MBSB Research anticipated similar mixed results for the second quarter of this year. 'Given that the Malaysian oil and gas sector is highly correlated with global trends, we expect that oil and gas companies are likely to face the same headwinds that impact their international counterparts,' the research house said.

Bintulu Port inks MoUs to boost Sarawak's clean energy transition

Each of these collaborations will proceed through focused feasibility studies and ongoing technical discussions to define key success criteria. KUCHING (Aug 12): Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) on Monday formalised three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with strategic international partners to support Sarawak's ambition of becoming a regional hub for green energy and sustainable fuels. In a statement, Bintulu Port said the MoU exchange ceremony, witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, coincided with the official launch of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) here on Monday, marking a landmark demonstration of its commitment to clean energy leadership. Representing BPHB during the MoU exchange was board member Datuk Seri Fong Joo Chung. The strategic partners were represented by Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd general manager Rudolph du Perez, Borneo Biogas Pte Ltd chairman Tan Soo Kong and Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co. Ltd. (Guofuhee) chairman Wu Pinfang. 'The first MoU was signed with Sakura Ferroalloys to collaborate on decarbonisation initiatives, focusing on the development of bioethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This initiative supports Sarawak's Net Zero Strategy 2050 and responds to global environmental frameworks such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM),' the statement said. The second MoU was with Borneo Biogas, a company specialising in the sustainable production of biomethane and Bio-LNG derived from palm oil and agricultural waste. 'The collaboration will explore the feasibility of establishing Bio-LNG production capabilities in Sarawak, including the development of Bio-LNG bunkering infrastructure and the utilisation of Bio-LNG to power port support vessels,' it added. The third MoU, signed with Guofuhee, a China-based company specialising in hydrogen energy equipment and systems, aims to develop a liquid hydrogen facility, positioning Bintulu Port as a key enabler of hydrogen logistics and exports. The MoU also prioritises meeting local hydrogen demand for Sarawak's industrial and transportation sectors, including the potential integration of hydrogen-powered vessels into Bintulu Port's operations, while reinforcing Sarawak's aspirations to become a global leader in hydrogen exports. 'Each of these collaborations will proceed through focused feasibility studies and ongoing technical discussions to define key success criteria. These efforts are designed to ensure effective implementation that aligns with Sarawak's Net Zero 2050 objectives,' the statement read. – Bernama
