'Critical' £1.2m renewable training facility opens in Inverness
The £1.2m Aurora's Renewable Energy Training Centre is the first of its kind to open in the Scottish Highlands, and it is expected to train more than 1,000 people in its first year of operation.
Eventually, it's expected to train more than 2,000 workers in the wind energy industry annually, who will be central to the country's renewable energy future.
The new facility will eliminate the need for prospective wind sector workers from the Highlands, Western Isles and Orkney to travel to Aberdeen, the central belt or north England for safety and technical training qualifications.
It's one part of Scotland's transition to net-zero plans.
'Wind energy project operators and developers are struggling to recruit staff with the prerequisite competency levels, and that's even before many of the recent successful ScotWind bids for fixed and floating windfarms get up and running,' Doug Duguid, CEO of Aurora Energy Services, said.
'If Scotland is serious about meeting net-zero levels by 2045, we have to put in place the workforce to construct, maintain and service the vast wind-related infrastructure, and Aurora's Inverness facility is playing a vital part in that process.'
He added that the training centre is also providing a 'bridge between Scotland's proud oil and gas energy heritage and our renewable energy future'. The training centre addresses a 'critical skills shortage' identified by the Offshore Wind Industry Council, which predicted that by 2026, nearly 89,000 jobs will be needed in the UK offshore wind sector.
That's an increase of 56,000 on the current workforce.
Aurora's training programme will focus on retraining experienced oil and gas sector workers while preparing new entrants for deployment in renewable energy.
'Our transition to a net-zero and climate-resilient Scotland will put money in people's pockets, improve health and wellbeing, lead to better public services and protect our planet for future generations,' the deputy first minister said.
'Workers are at the heart of Scotland's just transition and it's vital we plan for a multi-skilled workforce and enable offshore workers to carry their experience and expertise into different roles as the energy sector evolves.
'This is a great example of how the Scottish Government is supporting the energy sector to achieve this through our Green Freeports. We are also funding the college sector to establish an Offshore Wind Skills Programme.'
Forbes added: 'We will continue to work with organisations like Aurora Energy, Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport and workers across the region to ensure communities thrive.'

Google announces Tennessee as site for small modular nuclear reactor
NEW YORK, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, with Kairos Power, has selected Tennessee as the site of an advanced nuclear power plant that is expected to supply electricity to the Big Tech company's data centers in the U.S. southeast starting in 2030, the companies said on Monday. Big Tech is requiring massive amounts of electricity to scale up technologies like generative artificial intelligence in energy-intensive data centers. Those record energy needs are driving U.S. power consumption to new highs and propelling the development of fresh power sources like next-generation nuclear, opens new tab energy. The Tennessee reactor is the first to be deployed as part of Google's corporate agreement, announced last year, to buy nuclear energy from multiple small modular reactors. The deal would support 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear capacity, which is enough to power about 350,000 homes, to be developed by California-based nuclear company Kairos. The 50-gigawatt small modular nuclear power plant will be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, under a long-term power purchase agreement with utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVC.N), opens new tab, to deliver electricity to Google data centers locally and in the state of Alabama. 'This collaboration with TVA, Kairos Power, and the Oak Ridge community will accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies and help support the needs of our growing digital economy while also bringing firm carbon-free energy to the electricity system," said Google's Amanda Peterson Corio. The project marks the first time a U.S. utility has signed a power purchase agreement for so-called generation IV nuclear power, which is generally seen as the most sustainable and safe form of nuclear power technologies in development, the companies said. 'The deployment of advanced nuclear reactors is essential to U.S. AI dominance and energy leadership," U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement announcing the site selection. 'The Department of Energy has assisted Kairos Power with overcoming technical, operational, and regulatory challenges as a participant in the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, and DOE will continue to help accelerate the next American nuclear renaissance." Currently, there are no commercially available advanced nuclear power plants in the U.S.

Ukraine in talks with Azerbaijan on gas import deal, Kyiv says
KYIV, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Ukraine is negotiating a deal with Azerbaijan to import gas from the South Caucasus country this year, Kyiv's energy minister said on Monday. "We are currently in talks. Azerbaijan is interested in this," Svitlana Hrynchuk told Ukrainian outlet RBC-Ukraine. Ukraine imported test volumes of gas from Azerbaijan earlier this year as it seeks alternative supply options after Russian long-range attacks severely damaged domestic production. Hrynchuk said the test project is now over and Ukraine is working on the deal to cover further supplies in 2025. Earlier in August, Russia attacked the Orlovka interconnector in southern Ukraine, Kyiv said, part of the Transbalkan route through which it receives gas from sources including Azerbaijan. Ukraine plans to have 13.2 billion cubic metres of gas in its underground storage for the upcoming heating season, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said on Monday. Separately, Kyiv's foreign minister on Monday accused Russia of attacking an oil depot belonging to Azerbaijani state-owned firm SOCAR for the second time in two weeks.
