Anwar hails Asean diplomacy as Cambodia, Thailand agree ceasefire after Malaysia meet
In remarks following the agreement reached yesterday in Putrajaya, Anwar also said the two countries' collective endorsement underscores a shared commitment to stability in Southeast Asia.
The prime minister said Malaysia — currently the Asean chair — not only led, but also played a key role as facilitator, host, and witness to the success of this historic understanding.
'I extend my appreciation to regional partners and major powers who also supported this peace effort,' he said.
'Asean remains united and principled. Let us continue to pray for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region for our shared future.'
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate ceasefire effective from midnight on July 28, ending a deadly border dispute that has claimed dozens of lives over five days of clashes.
A meeting between military commanders from both nations is scheduled to take place on Tuesday as a vital first step toward de-escalation and restoration of peace.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked Anwar for hosting the negotiations that led to the 'brilliant result' of the ceasefire, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also applauded the Malaysian leader for driving the peace talks.

Thailand, Cambodia chose Malaysia because of stability, says Anwar
KOTA KINABALU: Thailand and Cambodia chose Malaysia as the location for peace talks because the country has stable politics and a developing economy, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said that as a friendly country, Malaysia was proud to be able to help resolve the conflict between the two Asian countries, thus ensuring that the region remains peaceful and stable. Anwar said Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thai Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit were expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to hold detailed discussions in an effort to find a solution to the conflict between the two neighbouring countries. "We are proud as a friendly country and of Malaysia's success in resolving the discord between two Asian countries. Imagine, they agreed in Kuala Lumpur. For the first time, we have been able to reconcile the war between two countries in Kuala Lumpur. Alhamdulillah," he said. He said this when officiating the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day here on Sunday (Aug 3). - Bernama

Thai government spokesman Jirayu slams politician for border clash claim, stirring false narrative against acting PM
BANGKOK: Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap hit back at Gen Rangsi Kittiyarnsup, leader of the Economic Party, for claiming that a government representative had ordered troops not to engage in clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border. Jirayu made the remarks on Saturday (Aug 2), following Rangsi's claim that someone from the government had called to instruct troops to avoid confrontation along the border on July 24. He clarified that the matter had been verified with Deputy Defence Minister Gen Natthapon Nakpanich, who is also the director of the Ad Hoc Centre for the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, which oversees operations in seven provinces. Natthapon confirmed that no such instruction was ever given and there was no reason for such an order to be issued. 'All security agencies, including the armed forces, have worked as a unified 'Team Thailand' in this historic national mission,' said Natthapon. Jirayu went on to criticise Rangsi's conduct, saying that as the leader of a political party, every statement he makes must take into account the country's stability. 'Even if he was once a soldier, he is now a politician. His words should reflect truth and integrity befitting a military man, not the antics of old-style politicians who stir up rhetoric without regard for national stability,' Jirayu said. 'If he wants to make a splash while launching a political party, this is certainly not the right way.' He also accused Rangsi of distorting Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai's past remarks. The Economic Party leader had cited a comment Phumtham made on May 7, during his tenure as Defence Minister, in which he advised caution to prevent violence. Rangsi reportedly used this out-of-context quote to suggest that Phumtham was a traitor in connection with the Thai-Cambodian clash on July 24, despite the fact that the two incidents were entirely unrelated. 'Today, the border situation is under control. The government, through the military, is now focused on recovery, rehabilitation and maintaining sovereignty and public safety. We are also presenting accurate information to international bodies, including human rights organisations and diplomatic partners,' Jirayu stated. He concluded by urging national unity at a critical time. - The Nation/ANN

PM: Sabah's rights over Sulawesi Sea intact, no deal yet with Indonesia
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim dismissed claims that Malaysia has ceded its rights over disputed areas in the Sulawesi Sea, saying negotiations with Indonesia are still ongoing and involve the Sabah state government. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fisherfolk Day in Kota Kinabalu, Anwar said any agreement on maritime borders or oil and gas cooperation must comply with legal and historical frameworks - including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) 1982, and most importantly, receive Sabah's consent...
