Vodafone Idea on Wednesday announced a strategic partnership with US-based satellite communications company AST SpaceMobile to deliver satellite-based mobile services directly to smartphones across India, without the need for specialised hardware or apps.
The telecom operator said the tie-up aims to expand coverage in India's unconnected regions by integrating AST SpaceMobile's space-based cellular technology with Vi's terrestrial telecom network.
'Vi and AST SpaceMobile Inc. announced a strategic partnership to expand mobile connectivity across India's unconnected regions,' Vodafone Idea said in a statement. The telco, however, did not disclose a specific launch date for the service, PTI reported.
A Vi spokesperson said the company would 'inform about material developments in due course of time.'
AST SpaceMobile, a competitor to Elon Musk's SpaceX, claims to be building the world's first space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by standard smartphones, and has previously conducted test calls using the technology. In 2023, the firm announced it had completed the first-ever space-based 4G call to an unmodified mobile phone, followed by a 10 Mbps download test and a 5G voice call in September.

The US-based company is backed by major global telecom firms including AT&T, Verizon, Google, and Vodafone Plc, and has agreements with more than 45 mobile network operators worldwide.
'This partnership will bring together Vi's robust national network with AST SpaceMobile's revolutionary technology, which connects directly to everyday smartphones without specialised software or device support,' the statement said.
Under the arrangement, AST will develop and operate the satellite constellation, while Vodafone Idea will handle spectrum use, terrestrial integration, and market access in India.
'This space-based ecosystem will enable Vi to extend voice, video, and data streaming services even in areas without tower connectivity,' the company added.
Chris Ivory, Chief Commercial Officer at AST SpaceMobile, said India's telecom landscape offers an ideal platform to showcase how satellite-based cellular broadband can supplement traditional infrastructure.
'We are not just expanding coverage; we are breaking down barriers to connectivity,' he said.
The partnership will also explore commercial offerings for consumer, enterprise, and IoT applications.
SpaceX, which operates the Starlink satellite internet service, is also pursuing direct-to-smartphone connectivity and has signed agreements with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to provide satellite internet in India.
Earlier this month, Starlink received telecom department approval to offer services in the country.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended that spectrum for satellite communication be allocated through an administrative route, a position opposed by telecom operators. The Telecommunications Act 2023 allows for spectrum allocation for point-to-point satcom services via fixed fees.

Union ministry grants environment clearance to Wayanad tunnel road project

Kozhikode: The Union environment, forest and climate change ministry has granted clearance for the construction of the controversial Rs 2,134-crore Wayanad (Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi) twin tunnel road. The environmental clearance was granted based on the recommendation of the expert appraisal committee (infrastructure, CRZ and other miscellaneous projects), which had laid down over 60 conditions. Work on the tunnel road can now start after signing the contract, said Tiruvambadi MLA Linto Joseph. He said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate the work next month. "The tunnel construction will be carried out under a tripartite agreement between PWD, KIIFB and Konkan Railway. The contract has been awarded to Bhopal-based Dilip Buildcon and Kolkata-based Royal Infrastructure. The tender process is over," he said. The central order states that clearance has been granted subject to the compliance of the 60 specific conditions laid down by environmental impact assessment, in addition to all standard conditions applicable to such projects. The order states that perceived geological impacts from tunnelling activities during construction include vibration from methods like blasting, which can lead to landslips if uncontrolled. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers (See List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo To manage this, a vibration monitoring plan shall be implemented before tunnelling starts, including demarcating impact areas and regulating blasting charges as advised by CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research. It said that during the operational stage, regulating speed can help mitigate adverse vibration impacts. "Additionally, ground settlement and potential subsidence in fracture zones necessitate documenting the tunnel's overburden architecture early in the process to guide precautionary measures. Other impacts include groundwater seepage through fractures, which can be evaluated through horizontal boreholes during tunnelling and guiding measures like selecting appropriate tunnelling methods. Monitoring for material creep and landslips near steep slopes should involve installing landslide sensors and vibration monitors," the order said. Environmentalists had raised concerns about the project's adverse ecological impact as it passes near high landslide-prone areas which had witnessed catastrophic landslides in 2018 and the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides in 2024. They had vowed to challenge the decision to grant environment clearance legally. The state-level expert appraisal committee had earlier given its approval for the project. However, the term of the members of the state environmental impact assessment authority, which was to give the final approval, expired following which the project was referred to the central expert committee.

After Xiaomi and realMe, contract manufacturer Optiemus bags order from OnePlus

NEW DELHI: After Xiaomi and RealMe, another top Chinese electronics provider OnePlus has outsourced the production of its audio and internet-of-things (IoT) products to a local Indian contract manufacturer. The announcement comes as India pushes the production of hi-tech electronics products in the country amidst the US tariff war with China. Optiemus Electronics will be making the products at its factory in Noida, which is in line with OnePlus' plan to localise production in the country. For Optiemus, this is the third such deal after it scored a similar partnership with other Chinese players Xiaomi as well as RealMe previously. 'The strategic partnership aligns with OnePlus' long-term vision for India and the recent project Starlight commitment to strengthen localisation efforts in the region. OnePlus is extending efforts towards expanding its local manufacturing capabilities and has now begun manufacturing its IoT portfolio of products in the Noida-based facility, in addition to its existing smartphones range being made in India,' the Chinese company said. Ashok Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Group said the collaboration marks a significant step in expanding its electronics manufacturing footprint. 'We specialize in transforming ideas into reality, and this partnership empowers us to manufacture high-quality IoT products. Together, we will continue to explore new frontiers and remain committed to playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of electronics manufacturing in India,' Gupta said. Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India, said the partnership with Optiemus reflects the company's commitment to Project Starlight. 'This collaboration is not just about technology— it's about empowering local communities, creating meaningful innovation, and bringing smarter, more connected experiences to our India community." OnePlus' key IoT offerings include TWS products and wireless neckbands. In April this year, Chinese realme had also partnered Optiemus to manufacture its next-generation AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) products in India, which include earphones, smartwatches, and tablets. The deal saw Optiemus and realme manufacture five million AIoT devices annually while generating over 2,000 new employment opportunities in the country.
