New scheme rolled out in 22 villages across Thoothukudi district to benefit farmers, agri sector
Following the launch of 'Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai-Farmers' Welfare' scheme by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Chennai on Thursday, P. Geetha Jeevan, Minister of Social Welfare and Women Environment, highlighted the benefits of the scheme at an event organised at the K. Subramaniyapuram village under the Jegaveerapandiyapuram revenue village of Ottapidaram taluk.
Speaking at the even, the minister said that the government had been taking various measures for the benefit of farmers. In line with these efforts, the newly launched the 'Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai-Farmers' Welfare' scheme aims to uplift the agricultural sector and safeguard the farmers' welfare. The scheme has initially been implemented in 22 villages across Thoothukudi district, with two villages selected from each region.
She underscored the TN government's efforts to increase agricultural production and enhance farmers income, highlighting the importance of integrating government schemes with modern technologies to benefit the farming community.
'It is noteworthy that in the 'Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai-Farmers' Welfare' scheme, where officials of the Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, Cooperative departments and scientists from the respective universities will directly visit the farmers and will provide suggestions, assess technological requirements and outline the schemes for them,' noted Ms. Geetha Jeevan.
She added that the scheme will eventually be rolled out across 479 villages in Thoothukudi district.
Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath, Vilathikulam G.V. Marknadeyan and other officials were present at the event.

Around 88 lakh beneficiaries of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Tamil Nadu have to be accommodated, as of now, within the reduced labour budget of 12 crore person-days during 2025-26. The State government had originally proposed 35 crore person-days, adopting a 'bottom-up' approach from village panchayats. Centre's nod However, the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj is optimistic of the Union government's approval for an increase in the labour budget for the State in the course of the current year. The reason is not far to seek. During 2024-25 too, Tamil Nadu was allotted only 20 crore person-days. Eventually, the Centre gave approval for around 10 crore more person-days, taking the total number of person-days generated to 30.61 crore. Delay in wages Early this year, the delay in the payments of wages made the headlines, prompting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to take exception. As the MGNREGS is a Central government scheme, the Union government bears the entire wage for unskilled labour. Out of a total unskilled wage expenditure of ₹8,375 crore during 2024-25, the beneficiaries have been paid ₹8,347 crore. A sum of ₹28 crore is yet to be released by the MoRD. As for the current year, ₹122 crore has been paid to the beneficiaries in wages and ₹170 crore is yet to be credited into their accounts, and it will be done shortly, the official points out, adding that the actual sanction has been taken for ₹944.56 crore. On Wednesday, the Tamil Nadu government notified the revised schedule of wage, which has been increased from ₹319 to ₹336. The workload has been increased proportionately, according to an order issued by the State Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj.

Kamal Haasan files nomination for Rajya Sabha election from Tamil Nadu

T.N. to bear education expenses of tribal girl who cleared JEE Advanced: Stalin
A girl from a tribal community from Tamil Nadu studying in a State-run residential school has qualified for the JEE Advanced 2025 and is set to get admission into one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday lauded A. Rajeshwari, who despite having lost her father last year, qualified in the JEE Advanced 2025. He added that that the Tamil Nadu government would bear her education expenses. 'The true pride for the IIT would be when more daughters like Rajeshwari join them. This Dravidian model of governance would continuously work towards it,' Mr. Stalin said in a social media post. AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami also commended the student for having secured 417th rank in the competitive exam. He wished her the best in her future endeavours.
