Mbappe lifts Real Madrid past Osasuna in La Liga opener
The France striker, last season's European Golden Shoe winner, scored early in the second half after he was fouled in the area by Osasuna defender Juan Cruz.
It was enough to seal the points in Alonso's first game in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Madrid now unbeaten in their opening fixture of a league campaign since 2008.
"You can see that Kylian wants to do even more after this first year where he did great things," said Alonso.
Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 31 goals in his first season in Spain, and is now wearing the number 10 shirt vacated by Luka Modric after the Croatian left for AC Milan last month.
"I don't know if it's linked to the new number or not, or simply to his desire to win, but he wants to improve individual and collective performance and inspire his team-mates," added Alonso.
"You can see his desire every day. Today he created those decisive moments that enable us to win matches."
Madrid had a shortened pre-season after their run to the Club World Cup semi-finals in July, but Alonso has been adamant that would not be used as an excuse after their request for the Osasuna match to be postponed to a later date was rejected.
"To start on the right foot is key in La Liga. We know we weren't well prepared," Madrid defender Dani Carvajal told DAZN. "But we basically didn't suffer and it was a complete display."
Spain international Carvajal came off the bench for his first league appearance since October after a long-term knee injury, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second half.
- New faces in Madrid -
Alexander-Arnold made his La Liga debut after his move from Liverpool, with former Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen and left-back Alvaro Carreras other summer arrivals included in the starting line-up.
Madrid though were without England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is expected to be sidelined until October as he recovers from a operation to solve a recurrent shoulder issue.
Madrid are looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era after relinquishing both their domestic and European crowns last season.
Alonso's side had to show patience against an Osasuna team that finished ninth last term, with the hosts largely restricted to long-range efforts from centre-backs Huijsen and Eder Militao in the first half.
Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera was equal to both, while Mbappe failed to connect cleanly after being picked out by Vinicius Junior before he curled another shot wide as Madrid struggled to break down their opponents.
But Mbappe grabbed the only goal six minutes after half-time after he went down following a clumsy challenge by Cruz as he tried to cut past the defender.
Mbappe duly got up and running for the new campaign as he sent Herrera the wrong way from the spot.
Alonso handed 18-year-old Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono his debut midway through the second half as Madrid controlled the game and seldom looked troubled.
Ante Budimir headed over in a rare opportunity for Osasuna and Mastantuono was denied late on by Herrera.
Osasuna finished the match with 10 men with Abel Bretones sent off in stoppage time for throwing an arm to block the run of Gonzalo Garcia.

Inter Milan are reportedly on the verge of signing midfielder Andy Diouf from Lens. The 22-year-old will sign on a five-year deal. Inter will reportedly pay Lens a fee of around €20 million plus €5 million in add-ons. And Sky note that Inter had already been ready to invest €40-45 million in a deal for either Ademola Lookman or Manu Kone. As such, Sky report, Inter still have enough cash to make one more notable signing before the transfer window slams shut. Alexander Isak bid CLOSE as Liverpool drop transfer hint
Newcastle forward - and documented Liverpool target – Alexander Isak issued a controversial statement on Tuesday night. Rather than attend the PFA awards ceremony, Isak decided to send a message to his employers. Citing a lack of trust and broken relationships, the 25-year-old declared it time to move on. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Darwin Nunez did not quite cut it last season and has been moved on to Al-Hilal. Liverpool won't move for another striker Hugo Ekitike has also been brought to the club but is seen by Arne Slot as a versatile option who can also play from the left. Liverpool definitely require another forward; the departures of Ben Doak, Luis Diaz and the aforementioned Nunez have left the Merseysiders a little light in attack. And right now we can assume that Liverpool WILL be back for Isak. Despite looking a player short up top, Liverpool have not panicked into moving for another target. The mantra around Anfield under FSG has always been that it's better to sign no player than the wrong player. And with the move for Isak in stasis, Liverpool are sticking to their guns. One more bid before window closes? According to a report in the Athletic, Liverpool WILL come back with another bid before the window closes. Clearly there is a lot that needs to happen before Isak ends up as a Liverpool player but there is no reason to believe that the Reds will look elsewhere at this stage. LFC remain keen 'Newcastle's rapid rejection of that £110million offer at the start of this month left Liverpool feeling that submitting an improved second bid would be futile,' the report reads. 'However, the Premier League champions haven't pursued an alternative target in the near three weeks since and remain keen to secure Isak's services if Newcastle's stance changes. 'They have the funds to break the British transfer record to get Isak. They have embarked on the biggest spending spree in their history this summer, with around £320million, including add-ons, committed to new signings, but have also generated up to £220m from player sales.' © IMAGO

Matthew Stafford participates in full week of Rams practice, and his injured back feels much better
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matthew Stafford has completed his first full week of practice since the start of training camp, and the Los Angeles Rams ' starting quarterback says he is optimistic about the improvement in his injured back. Stafford went through a third full practice Thursday with no restrictions in his movements or throws. Although Stafford and coach Sean McVay didn't definitively state it, Stafford appears to be in position to play for the Rams in their regular-season opener against Houston on Sept. 7. 'Good thing is I feel pretty good the last couple of days out there practicing,' Stafford said at the Rams' training complex in Woodland Hills. 'Was able to do even a little bit more than I thought I was going to be able to do the first day, and then just been trying to stack days.' Stafford said he has done 'everything under the sun' to deal with an irritated disk in his back. The injury developed while he trained after the Rams' minicamp this summer, and it kept the Super Bowl winner sidelined for the first 3 1/2 weeks of training camp and the preseason. Stafford returned to practice Monday initially planning to do only individual drills, but he was pleasantly surprised by his ability to do everything with relative ease. He participated in another full practice Thursday, throwing to his teammates against a live pass rush while building the chemistry necessary to compete in the regular season, particularly with new receiver Davante Adams. 'I definitely felt more like myself out there today,' Stafford said. 'I'm going to do everything I can to be out there while still being smart and knowing, hey, we've got something that deserves a little attention.' McVay was clearly encouraged by Stafford's progress during the week. Stafford participated in every aspect of every practice, the coach said. 'He looks like the stud that we know,' McVay said. 'I think the first day was kind of getting comfortable, just getting his feet wet a little bit, and then I think each of the last couple of days, he's played really fast.' The 37-year-old Stafford's balky back has been one of the Rams' two major injury concerns — along with the blood clots sidelining left tackle Alaric Jackson — as the defending NFC West champions prepare to begin a season with Super Bowl aspirations. Stafford watched training camp from the sideline at Loyola Marymount when he wasn't going through rehab work and off-field treatment. He did individual workouts on the days of the Rams' first two preseason games, but he didn't get back into practice until Monday. 'From what I see, there's no restrictions and he's playing at a really high level," McVay said. 'I'm very excited and optimistic, but I'm not a doctor.' Even after initially stating that Stafford would only miss the first week of training camp, McVay repeatedly said he thought Stafford's injury wasn't serious enough to keep him out if the Rams had been playing games that counted. The coach finally seemed less certain of Stafford's sturdiness last week when the quarterback had to scrap his plan to rejoin practices because his back wasn't up to it — only for Stafford to exceed his own expectations in practice this week. 'Backs are sometimes interesting things,' Stafford said. 'It's not cut-and-dried what's what, and how you're going to feel.' Stafford is one of many Rams veterans who won't travel to Cleveland this weekend for their final preseason game. McVay said fourth-stringer Dresser Winn will start against the Browns after Stetson Bennett played well while taking nearly all of the snaps in Los Angeles' first two preseason games. ___ AP NFL:
