England sweep West Indies series as Smith scores maiden ODI fifty
Player-of-the-match Smith, opening in ODIs for the first time this series, launched England's pursuit of a revised target of 246 with a quickfire 64 in a match reduced by rain to 40 overs per side
"It felt great on my home ground, getting the team off to a good start, taking the pressure off the middle order," Smith told Sky Sports during the presentation ceremony. "That is the role I want to take on."
Victory meant Harry Brook led England to a whitewash in his first series as permanent white-ball captain after they had lost their seven previous matches at this level, culminating in a woeful exit from this year's Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Brook was 26 not out at the finish but it was Jos Buttler, his predecessor as captain, who ended the match with an emphatic six out of the ground off fast bowler Jayden Seales that capped an unbeaten 41.
"We have been talking about being dominant and finishing the series 3-0," said Brook, adding: "Smith took the game away from West Indies in the powerplay which is what we like to see."
England made a blistering start to their chase, scoring 93 in the first seven overs.
Smith's fifty came off 25 balls, including nine fours and two sixes.
He hit four boundaries in four balls in the seventh over before being bowled by Gudakesh Motie, who earlier made a fine 63 in West Indies' total of 251-9 but conceded 74 runs in his eight overs.
'Evolving Root'
Smith's exit brought in Joe Root, fresh from steering England to a three-wicket win in Cardiff on Sunday with an ODI best of 166 not out that saw the star batsman become his country's leading run-scorer in this format.
Ben Duckett completed a 34-ball fifty including four fours and three sixes, before the left-handed opener fell for 58 when he flayed off-spinner Roston Chase to cover.
Root could only manage 44 on Tuesday before he was caught top-edging a hook off Alzarri Joseph. But that still meant the player-of-the-series had scored 267 runs in three innings at an average of 133.5.
"There is so much data out there so you have to evolve and expand your game," said Root, also England's leading run-scorer in Test cricket.
Earlier, Sherfane Rutherford top-scored for the West Indies with 70 in his first match of the series.
The tourists slumped to 121-6, with veteran England leg-spinner Adil Rashid (3-40) taking three wickets in quick succession.
But Motie and Alzarri Joseph (41) shared an eighth-wicket stand of 91 in 12 overs before Smith made the West Indies' total look inadequate.
The West Indies' day got off to a bad start when traffic problems meant they arrived at the ground late, delaying the start by 30 minutes.
England avoided the traffic by riding bikes and made the most of winning the toss to leave their opponents 28-3 inside seven overs.
"There are always positives you can take from any series, any match," said West Indies captain Shai Hope, out for a golden duck at the Oval, ahead of a three-match T20 series against England starting at Chester-le-Street on Friday.

Ait-Nouri, Reijnders to join Man City for Club World Cup
Wolves left-back Ait-Nouri is expected to complete a £34 million ($45 million) move to the Etihad Stadium over the weekend, Sky Sports reported. An initial £46 million deal for Dutch midfielder Reijnders has been agreed with AC Milan, along with add-ons potentially taking the transfer to £59 million. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak promised last week to conduct "swift" transfer business in order to give Pep Guardiola's men the best chance of winning the Club World Cup. Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki could also be signed in time for the tournament in the United States as negotiations between City and the French club are ongoing. City will face Moroccan side Wydad AC and Emirati club Al Ain before a clash of European heavyweights with Juventus in the group stage, which kicks off on June 14. After missing out on a major trophy in the recently completed season for the first time since 2016/17, City are hoping to bounce back quickly with a major overhaul of Guardiola's squad. They also spent more than £172 million in January on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. The raft of new arrivals, however, could spell the end of England winger Jack Grealish's City career. Grealish, who remains City's record signing after a £100 million move from Aston Villa in 2021, will reportedly be left out of Guardiola's 35-man squad for the Club World Cup.

England paceman Carse considered amputation of troublesome toe
The express paceman has battled against longstanding problems with the second toe of his left foot. He was forced to pull out of England's Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan in February and withdraw from a lucrative deal in the Indian Premier League. "It ended up being quite a severe wound I was playing with for the majority of the winter, it got infected a couple of times," Carse said ahead of England's first T20 against the West Indies at his home ground of Durham on Friday. "It is a bit running joke in the changing room, my second toe. So we came up with the thought, 'Can we just get rid of the second toe'? "Everyone has had their opinion on my second toe. At one stage I was going to bed thinking 'I could actually do this, I think I could get rid of my second toe' but then the medical staff said you need it for balance so that was quickly ruled out. "I'm going to have to keep it a little bit longer." Carse has taken various measures, including changing his boots, and had an extended break between February and May. The South African-born player has only played five Tests but he is increasingly viewed as a first-choice bowler for England across all formats. He is set to play for England in one-day internationals, T20s and Test cricket this month alone and knows his body will be pushed to the limit. "Playing through all three formats is a challenge for anyone," Carse said. "As we work through the summer I'm going to have to look after myself and those are always ongoing conversations but we've got an incredible support structure and medical staff." England, who wrapped up a 3-0 win against the West Indies in their one-day international series on Tuesday, now take on the Caribbean team in three T20s, at Chester-le-Street, Bristol and Southampton.

Marsh back to lead Australia in West Indies T20s
Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is back, having been rested for Australia's last T20 series against Pakistan in November, and left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann makes the squad for the first time. Marsh missed the Pakistan series and has recovered from a lower back injury that kept him out of the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Australia's Test and 50-over captain Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Mitchell Starc were left out of the 16-man squad for the series next month. They will return to Australia following three Tests against the West Indies beginning on June 25. Young batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk was dropped, but there was a maiden call-up for the 23-year-old Owen after a Big Bash League season where he was the highest run scorer and made a memorable 108 off 42 balls in the final. Australia have won 12 of their past 14 matches as they build towards next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Chairman of selectors George Bailey said: "We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series, followed by three against South Africa and New Zealand and five matches against India at home as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent." All-rounder Marsh was in fine form during the Indian Premier League season, scoring 627 runs for Lucknow Super Giants, including a maiden century. Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly also return following injury. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who on Monday announced his retirement from 50-over international cricket, retained his place in the T20 squad. The first T20 against the West Indies is on July 20 at Kingston, Jamaica. Australia T20 squad:
