Internal probe panels missing in several TN government colleges amid rise in harassment complaints across country
As per the law designed to protect women from sexual harassment, all workplaces, both public and private, must establish ICCs to address complaints and take steps to prevent sexual harassment of women.
Of the 193 institutes (13 state-run universities and 180 government colleges) to which RTI queries were sent on the working of 'Vishaka Committees', only 80 colleges have sent their replies. Thirty-four colleges said they have ICC panels, but only nine of them shared details about these committees.
None of the government universities responded to the RTI query. The state government, in September 2024, had directed all higher education institutions to ensure compliance with the POSH Act, and take proactive measures to tackle drug menace on campuses, but the RTI reply revealed that colleges have failed to comply with the order.
When contacted by TNIE, P Shankar, Principal Secretary of Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department, said that it is mandatory to form ICC in educational institutions, and promised to take necessary steps to ensure compliance.

'Tell ICC Chief ...': Priyanka Chaturvedi Asks Amit Shah To Call His Son Jay, Cancel India-Pak Match
In a fiery speech in the Rajya Sabha, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi demanded the cancellation of the upcoming India vs Pakistan cricket match in Asia Cup tournament, citing national sentiment in the wake of the brutal Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 Indian lives. Linking the match to Operation Sindoor, she urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct ICC Chairman Jay Shah, his son, to take immediate action. 'Operation Sindoor is still underway,' she said, quoting PM Modi. 'If we've restricted the film industry and media, why not cricket too?' She asked how the country could justify playing a match with the nation that harbors terrorists, questioning how the widows of slain soldiers would feel. Chaturvedi also called out the commercialization of patriotism and demanded moral clarity from the government and ICC. A bold political stand or overreach? Rights groups say vague Data Protection Act to fail RTI, curb Press freedom
Civil rights and journalist bodies on Wednesday expressed apprehension over the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, saying the provisions under it may fail the Right to Information Act and end press freedom. Supreme Court lawyer and convenor of The Campaign for Judicial Accountability & Judicial Reforms, Prashant Bhushan alleged that the Act bars and amends RTI Act to stop sharing of personal identifiable information without consent. He said that the provision not only kills the Right to Information Act but also discourages journalists and whistleblowers from exposing the names of corrupt officials without their consent. 'The definitions contained in the Act of data fiduciary, data principal, data processing that anyone be it an activist who seeks personal information through RTI or journalist or a whistleblower attempts to expose corrupt officials then it can be considered an offence under the Act,' Bhushan said. Former High Court Justice AP Shah in an open letter to Attorney General of India on July 28 said that Section 44(3) of the DPDP Act 'enables public authorities to deny information simply by classifying it as 'personal,' regardless of its public relevance or importance.'
