
Millions of Brits get free mobile upgrade as two major firms confirm change
Changes to your mobile phone can seem like a daunting prospect. Brits might find it all too easy to get lost in the tech jargon, as word comes from your smartphone company that they are modifying an aspect of your device.
However, millions of Vodafone and Three customers are set for one kind of boost that should be very welcome - an improvement in their mobile signal, as the networks, which have recently merged, unveils its £11billion grand plans.
The firms are joining forces to create a platform called VodafoneThree, meaning it will now be the UK's biggest. In just two weeks' time, seven million Three users and its budget sub-brand SMARTY will see their services get better.
This includes a 20 per cent average speed uplift on 4G for everything from surfing the web to texting pals.
And that's not all. Wait just a few more months, and 27 mobile subscribers across both Vodafone and Three will start to benefit from full access to roam on each other's networks. This will be made available at no extra cost.
This will get rid of dreaded "not spots" from parts of the country amounting to ten times the size of London.
VodafoneThree has confirmed that its various brands will remain separate.
This not only includes Vodafone and Three, but also VOXI, SMARTY and Talkmobile.
However, Vodafone will be the only brand for business customers.
"A new era of connectivity has begun," Max Taylor, CEO, VodafoneThree, said.
"We will connect every nation, every community, in every corner of the UK.
"We will build the UK's best 5G network with an unprecedented £11bn privately funded infrastructure project, laying the digital foundation for our country's growth ambitions.
"Benefits for our 27 million mobile customers will start within months, with access to roam across both networks at no extra cost.
"From big cities to small towns, and everywhere in between, our mission is to build the UK's best network."
Along with the coverage boost, VodafoneThree reckons it will make its cutsomer service better.
Within two years the company will open two new customer care centres in Belfast and Sheffield, bringing 400 sales and customer service roles back to the UK, alongside the existing call centres in Glasgow and Stoke.
Other exciting developments we can anticipate are the beta trials on a "first-of-its-kind," space-based satellite mobile network that VodaFoneThree says it will launch next year.
This will support the existing network build, eliminating coverage gaps in places that otherwise couldn't be reached.
Lastly, even customers of other providers - such as EE and O2 - will be able to try VodafoneThree's network with a seven-day, free, eSIM trial.
By simply scanning a QR code, customers will be able to try the network with the same phone and same contact details.

One in five secondary school pupils have felt pressured into sharing an explicit image of themselves, disturbing new research has revealed. The shocking study by Vodafone shows that nearly two thirds of the 11 to 17-year-olds later discovered that their images or videos had been forwarded on without their consent. The worrying data comes as 85 per cent of parents prepare to buy their child a new phone before they start secondary school next month. But almost half (46 per cent) admit to having concerns around their child receiving explicit images on the device. The disturbing survey comes as Vodafone becomes the first mobile network globally to launch a new smartphone which uses AI to protect children. The first-of-it kind smartphone HMD Fuse is equipped with AI system HarmBlock+ to prevent explicit content from being shown on screen, captured by camera, shared or stored. The research, which surveyed 1,000 parents and secondary school children, alongside 4,555 teachers, lays bare the worrying consequences sharing such images have for children. Some 17 per cent said they had been targeted by individuals pretending to be someone they trusted, like a classmate or friend online. The first-of-it kind smartphone HMD Fuse is equipped with AI system HarmBlock+ to prevent explicit content from being shown on screen, captured by camera, shared or stored. For many who shared images, the emotional impact was instant, with 36 per cent experiencing immediate regret, and 28 per cent anxious it might fall into the wrong hands. Nearly two thirds (63 per cent) later discovered that their images or videos had been forwarded on without their consent, with 27 per cent of young people admitting they had seen explicit images of someone at their school via a friend's device. Just under half (41 per cent) of teachers reported explicit image-sharing as a growing problem in their school, with more than one in four saying they dealt with at least one incident of explicit images of students being shared in the last academic year. They said most of those affected displayed increased anxiety (65 per cent), lower moods (60 per cent), increased absences (55 per cent) and even falling grades (25 per cent). James Robinson, Vice President, HMD Family, said the new phone 'recognises children's evolving needs – and puts safety at the heart of the experience from day one'. 'It gives parents more control and peace of mind and helps to protect children from explicit content in real time, without encroaching on their privacy,' he added. Available exclusively at Vodafone, the device uses the advanced AI built directly into the operating system and the camera, making it safer from the moment it's switched on. Designed to evolve over time with the child, the device is guided by an advanced parental control system, which allows applications to be added or removed, even the camera. Creator of HarmBlock Richard Pursey said the AI system was 'ground-breaking'. 'HarmBlock AI brings a new dimension to our parental controls technologies as it focuses on harmful content, as opposed to simply remotely managing a device and the apps... 'By embedding HarmBlock and parental controls in the operating system we have made devices safer, irrespective of the apps running on it.' In conjunction, Vodafone is also launching 'Connect and Protect', a brand-new set of tools, helping parents decide when to get a phone for their child, and how to choose the right one with expert help from the NSPCC. While parents have their concerns smartphones, many also recognise the benefits, from supporting schoolwork (49 per cent) to location tracking, which 65 per cent value. Drivers warned not to pay at pump after petrol station scam
Skimming devices, often hidden in plain sight on card readers at unattended pumps, are being used to clone debit and credit card information - leaving victims unaware until it's too late. A fraud expert has issued a warning to drivers after a rise in petrol station scams, where criminals use card skimmers to steal card details and create copies of cards. Paul Hampson, CEO of fraud and scam recovery firm CEL Solicitors, warns that the contactless and chip-and-PIN fraud can take money out of your account but also any overdraft allowances on the card, leaving many in financial difficulty. 'These scams are designed to be virtually undetectable,' he says. 'Criminals install fake card slots or hidden chips that skim your details as soon as you insert your card. It's fast, silent and can affect anyone who isn't on high alert.' Petrol stations are an ideal target because drivers are often distracted and in a rush - especially at night or in quieter locations. 'The most common tactic is to fit a false front to the card machine, or place a tiny device inside the slot,' Mr Hampson explains. 'Some will even hide miniature cameras to record your PIN. These devices can be installed and removed in under a minute.' He advises all motorists to be extra cautious at unattended pumps, particularly those open 24/7. 'If anything looks suspicious, don't take the risk,' Mr Hampson says. 'Go inside and pay at the counter instead.' He also recommends covering the keypad when entering your PIN - even if nobody is nearby. 'Many victims feel embarrassed they were caught out, but these devices are sophisticated and hard to spot,' he says. 'The fault lies with the fraudsters - not you.' If you suspect you've been skimmed, report it to your bank immediately and check for suspicious activity. 'Act fast,' Mr Hampson says. 'A quick check could save you hundreds,' he adds. 'Drivers need to stay alert.' Motoring experts at have revealed five key tricks fraudsters are using - from tampered QR codes on parking meters to convincing fake DVLA messages - and are warning Brits to stay vigilant or risk losing their hard-earned cash. 'A lot of these scams will urge you to quickly pay a fee to avoid facing bigger fines. When we see something like this we often rush to get the payment done rather than stopping and checking the legitimacy of the message or letter.
