Er Rashid to go on 24-hr hunger strike from today
Jailed Baramulla MP Er Rashid, will begin a 24-hour hunger strike inside Tihar Jail from Sunday evening to protest the continued denial of democratic rights to Kashmiri prisoners. AIP said that in a show of solidarity, party leaders across Jammu & Kashmir—including chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, general secretary Prince Parvaiz, Political Affairs Committee chairman Ishtiyaq Qaderi, senior leader Firdous Baba, state secretary Sheikh Ashiq, Pattan Incharge Mohammad Akbar and advocate Dawood Bashir Bhat of Lolaab will also observe a day-long hunger strike.
'Our president is raising the voice of voiceless Kashmiri prisoners. We stand with him in this protest against injustice,' said AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi.
'This hunger strike is not just an act of solidarity—it is a moral call to the conscience of the nation. Er Rashid has been in jail for years without conviction, and hundreds of other Kashmiris face the same fate, languishing in prisons under draconian laws. His protest is a reminder that justice cannot be selective and silence cannot be mistaken for peace. As his colleagues and fellow Kashmiris, we are duty-bound to join him in this peaceful resistance. We refuse to let the voices of the innocent be buried behind bars.'
The hunger strike will begin simultaneously across party offices in J&K, marking a symbolic protest against prolonged detentions and political indifference towards the plight of Kashmiri prisoners.

Mohali: MC's waste mgmt plant hits a wall as residents block work
The municipal corporation's waste management plans hit a roadblock on Sunday, as residents of Sectors 74 and 91 stopped JCB machines engaged in construction work at the proposed waste processing plant near the Sector 90-Chappar Chiri road. (HT Photo) The machines had reached the site to start construction of the plant on the 13 acres possessed by the civic body. However, residents blocked the work. Shouting slogans, the protesters declared they would not allow a 'mountain of garbage' to rise in their neighbourhood, citing foul odour, mosquito breeding and health hazards that would make life miserable for residents, especially children and the elderly. Some residents said they had met MLA Kulwant Singh on Saturday regarding the issue. But Singh categorically told them the plant will come up at the same site, which further inflamed public anger. 'Today, work was initiated with a JCB machine, but residents of Sectors 74 and 91 reached the spot and stopped it. We have already won a case in the Punjab and Haryana high court directing that dumping at this site must stop by September, yet the corporation and the MLA are ignoring the order,' claimed Baldev Raj, president of the Sector 74 RWA. Other residents, including Ramdeep Kaur, Babita Hundal, Vikram Kamboj and Aman Slatch, joined in, saying they would not allow their area to be blotched by garbage, filth and stench. MC commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu maintained that the Chappar Chiri land belonged to the corporation and assured that the plant will come up with 'latest technology'. 'We will pacify the residents as there is some miscommunication,' he said. Housing a population of 2.3 lakh, Mohali is gripped by a growing waste crisis in the absence of a permanent mechanism for processing the 150 tonnes of garbage generated daily. Heaps of stinking waste remain scattered across neighbourhoods, drawing flies and stray animals, much to residents' dismay. After years of delay, two waste management facilities have been set up at Shahimajra (capacity 40 tonnes) and Jagatpura (capacity 80 tonnes). But despite sheds and machinery in place, both plants remain non-functional. The mounting crisis has also hurt Mohali's standing in national cleanliness rankings. In the latest Swachh Survekshan results announced on July 17, the city slipped to 128th place among 903 cities (with populations between 50,000 and 3 lakh), down from 82nd last year. Within Punjab, it fell to 11th among 35 cities, a sharp drop from the first-place rank it held just a year ago among cities with populations over 1 lakh.

(HT Photo) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the inauguration of key roadworks on Sunday, took aim at the opposition parties' claims of working for social justice by citing a provision in the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, which allowed jailing sanitation workers for a month if they failed to report to work without prior intimation. 'Today I am going to tell you that truth. In Delhi, there was a dangerous law in the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act. There was a clause that if a safai mitra (sanitation worker) skipped work without informing beforehand, he or she could be jailed for a month. Think about it, what did they think of safai karmacharis? You will put them in jail for a small mistake? They now talk big about social justice. They made and kept such laws. It is Modi who is removing these laws and repealing them,' he said. PM Modi alleged that 'those who dance with the Constitution on their heads' had 'trampled' the Constitution and 'betrayed' the sentiments of BR Ambedkar, by retaining oppressive laws for decades until he repealed them. The Prime Minister said that previous governments treated safai karamcharis like slaves. 'I am telling you the truth of how those who dance with the Constitution on their heads trampled the Constitution and betrayed Babasaheb Ambedkar. You will be shocked. It is Modi who is tirelessly finding and abolishing such unjust laws and this campaign continues relentlessly,' the PM said. An MCD official, on condition of anonymity, said that the DMC Act was passed in 1957 and many of its provisions have become archaic and outdated. 'A process of decriminalising various provisions of the Act is being undertaken. Many old and archaic provisions are being removed.' Last year, the MCD had asked all its departments to give suggestions on decriminalising the Act. The decision is being implemented in the direction of the Centre, aiming to reduce the sentence or imprisonment period for various violations. According to the DMC Act, defaulters are expected to face imprisonment for violations in many cases, such as tax payment, obtaining licences from the public health department, illegal construction or encroachments, and violation of advertisement norms (including placing illegal advertisements). 'Though there are barely any instances where we are using the imprisonment conditions, these sections no longer make sense,' the official said. Reacting to the PM Modi's inauguration event, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said, 'BJP issued an order to fill the empty seats in the PM's rally. The level of BJP has dropped so much that now they are taking advantage of the helplessness of government employees to hide its failure.' Even as the AAP and Congress alleged that sanitation workers and teachers were ordered to attend the rally, MCD officially maintained that no official order was issued to workers in this regard.

Calling it Uttar Pradesh's good fortune that Bateshwar in Agra was Vajpayee's ancestral land, the CM recalled that the former PM pursued higher education in Kanpur and began his political journey from Balrampur. 'Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected to Parliament from Lucknow five times, served 10 terms in the Lok Sabha, two in the Rajya Sabha, and three terms as Prime Minister, giving the nation glorious leadership,' Yogi said. He said the state government has reached out to various sections of society Vajpayee cared for, establishing Atal Residential Schools in all 18 divisions, where 18,000 children of workers are receiving modern facilities. The CM said the state government is committed to preserving the late PM's legacy. He said the state cabinet recently approved a scheme under which five students will be sent to Britain every year for higher education, with half of their scholarship funded by the state government. The scholarship has been dedicated in the name of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In his welcome speech, deputy CM Brajesh Pathak described Vajpayee as a stalwart in Indian politics who was revered by all. Pathak highlighted the former PM's exceptional leadership and commitment to public service. He said Vajpayee maintained the highest standards of integrity in politics and served as a role model for future generations. Deputy CM's book on late PM unveiled On the occasion, the CM released a book 'Atulniya Atalji', written by deputy CM Brajesh Pathak that explores Vajpayee's life, personality and legacy. The book includes excerpts from Vajpayee's selected poems and personal anecdotes. The book also focuses on the ex-PM's ideological contributions. The work contains three articles written by Vajpayee in the 1960s on nationalism, Indianness and promotion of Indian languages. It also compiles three notable speeches, including his first address to the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi as the external affairs minister, his first Red Fort address as PM and his inaugural speech as the president of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh. Pathak said the book is aimed at introducing the younger generation to Vajpayee's thoughts and legacy, while portraying him as a poet, writer, thinker, people's leader and freedom fighter. Tribute from poet Renowned poet Padma Shri Surendra Sharma paid tribute to Vajpayee, recalling his inspiring words and phrases. Sharma described him as a towering figure in Indian politics. The ceremony also recognised the achievements of talented students and emerging young poets, who were awarded for their outstanding work. Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, BJP state president Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma and ministers in the UP government were also present at the event.
