Cause of death revealed for 3 Revere women found dead in their hotel room in Belize
In a joint statement, the families of 23-year-old Kaoutar Naqqad, 26-year-old Wafae El-Arar, and 26-year-old Imane Mallah said officials with the United States Embassy in Belize informed them that all of the young women died from acute carbon monoxide poisoning, likely caused by a faulty water heater.
'While we remain shattered by the loss of these three bright lights in our world, we are incredibly heartened by the results of this investigation and grateful to those who completed it in a thorough and independent manner,' the families said.
The new details come after weeks of speculation about their deaths, including speculation that the women may have suffered overdoses, with a news outlet in Belize reporting that gummies and alcohol were found in the room.
The families noted that they are still awaiting the results of a separate independent review being done by authorities in Massachusetts.
'We have said since the beginning of this investigation that their deaths were suspicious and raised concerns about initial reports in the news media,' the families said. 'While today's official finding puts to rest those initial reports, we hope this will give authorities in law enforcement pause before they make similar suggestions during future investigations. Survivors such as our families deserve their best, honest work. We received it today but needed it throughout this investigative process.'
The victims' families also asked Belize authorities to continue looking into their own practices and how hotel management handled the deaths of the three women.
'Our families remain incredibly grateful to the outpouring of support we have received from family, friends, leaders, and loved ones since their passing,' the statement added. 'Our families ask for continued prayers, patience, and privacy as we navigate this unimaginable loss. May their beautiful souls rest in eternal peace. We will forever love and miss you, Kaoutar, Imane, and Wafae.'
The three women were described as lifelong friends and were found dead in their hotel room at the resort in February.
Kaoutar, Imane, and Wafae were young professionals in the medical field and part of a tight-knit community.
'These young women were valued members of our community, and while the gravity of this tragedy weighs heavily on us all, I am grateful for the diligence of our state and federal partners in ensuring that a proper investigation was conducted and brought the truth to light,' Revere Mayor Patrick M. Keefe Jr. said.
GoFundMe pages have been set up on behalf of each of the three families linked to the tragedy.

Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old New York man shot and killed in Puerto Rico while attending a Bad Bunny concert. Queens resident Kevin Mares was fatally shot Sunday night at a San Juan nightclub in the La Perla neighborhood of the commonwealth U.S. island's capital city a little after 4 a.m. local time, according to police. Officials said the East Elmhurst man was an innocent bystander when gunfire erupted. A 46-year-old local man and his sister, 45, were both injured but survived. The incident took place at the nightclub Refugio de Hombres Maltratados in the La Perla neighborhood, an area known for crime in the coastal town. Investigators said an argument broke out and a person pulled out a gun and started shooting. "They were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time," Claudia Saenz, a family friend, told the Daily News. Meanwhile, no arrests have been made and no suspects named. Local police, according to Det. Arnaldo Ruiz, were working with "very little" information about the incident. In a statement posted to social media, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he was heartbroken that his life was "tragically ripped away due to gun violence in Puerto Rico." "Condolences and prayers are with all of Kevin's loved ones grieving this unimaginable loss," stated the embattled Democrat-turned-Independent mayor currently up for re-election in a hotly contested mayoral race. According to witnesses in recorded reports, Mares attended Saturday night's Bad Bunny concert in San Juan with his girlfriend and friends. According to Mare's mother, he was planning to propose marriage in the fall to his girlfriend of seven years. The family, meanwhile, is working with Puerto Rican authorities to return Mare's remains part of an active investigation in America's island territory, which is reportedly estimated to cost the grieving family at least $23,000 with a GoFundMe page setup to aid in the process.

New York man fatally shot while in Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny concert remembered as inspiration
A New York man who was fatally shot in Puerto Rico's La Perla neighborhood in San Juan on Sunday is being remembered by his loved ones as a beloved son, friend and inspiration to all who knew him. Kevin Mares, 25, was visiting the island with friends to attend a Bad Bunny concert. On Sunday, Mares was out when a few people began to fight across the street, his father, Hector Mares, told NBC New York. "Somebody got a gun and start shooting, and unfortunately they hit my son in the abdomen," Hector Mares said. Mares was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of the shooting, according to Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mares' death has left his family completely devastated and in shock. "My son, everybody loves him, everybody," Hector Mares told NBC New York. "He was doing good at school, he was working. When he came home from work, he started taking care of his, his pets, and he loves cooking." The last time he saw his son was right before he left for Puerto Rico. "We say, 'Goodbye, take care, see you soon, we're gonna miss you,'" Hector Mares said. "We never, never expect that was going to be the last time we see him." Mares' mother, Sandra Mares, was in disbelief when she was told of her son's passing. "We couldn't believe it," she told NBC New York in Spanish. "We thought it was a joke." Sandra recalled spending weekends with her son, when the family would get together to grill hamburgers and hotdogs, or sing karaoke. Now, all Mares' parents want is for their son's body to be brought back to New York. They started a GoFundMe to help them with body transfer and funerary expenses. The family remembered Mares as "a deeply loved son, devoted friend, and a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him," who had a bright future ahead of him. "His wholehearted kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering commitment to family made him a pillar of strength for his loved ones," his family said on the GoFundMe page. Mares was planning to propose to his girlfriend of six years this fall, according to his family. "Family was at the center of everything he did, and his sudden passing has left an unfillable void in our lives," the family said. The investigation into the shooting that killed Mares is ongoing.
