From a golf driving range for beginners, how Siri Fort Sports Complex has become one of the largest sports arenas in the national capital

Indian Express10-08-2025
The Siri Fort Sports Complex (SFSC), one of the largest multi-sports facilities in the national capital, caters to both professional sports persons as well as amateurs. Membership of the complex, like that of most clubs in Delhi, is often treated as a badge of prestige. Now, Delhi residents have a chance to become a member of this highly sought-after clique.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will open applications for 800 permanent memberships at the SFSC from August 12 to September 11.
The SFSC, formally opened by the DDA in 1989, is often described as one of the legacies of the 1982 Asian Games in the city. Initially, it featured a golf driving range for beginners, followed in 1991 by the addition of a 10-metre air rifle and pistol shooting range, a cricket ground, and a jogging track. Over time, the facility expanded to include indoor amenities such as squash and tennis courts and a gym, as well as outdoor features like a skating rink, a children's park, and several tennis courts.
A swimming pool was introduced in 1994, while a football field was added in 1998, along with a nine-hole mini golf course soon after. Significant upgrades came in 2002 with the installation of air-conditioned indoor badminton courts and synthetic tennis courts. Ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, for which it served as a training venue, many facilities – including the badminton courts – were modernised. The event also led to the establishment of an all-season, Olympic-size swimming pool.
Today, the complex also has facilities for basketball, croquet, aerobics, yoga, taekwondo, multi-gym, Reiki, naturopathy, Krav Maga, western dance, ballet, and jazz.
DDA officials said that permanent memberships for the SFSC are being opened after a gap, following 'persistent demand from the fitness and sports community'. Apart from Siri Fort, the DDA operates 18 sports complexes, four mini sports complexes, and three golf courses in Delhi. The authority said the expansion of access to the SFSC is part of its effort to 'provide high-quality sports facilities for the public'.

Former Panthers star urges Team Canada to add him with Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid in 4 Nations

Brandon Montour openly pitches to join Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid after Team Canada snub (The Canadian Press) After celebrating the pinnacle of his NHL career by hoisting the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024, Brandon Montour has set his sights on another dream. This time, the prize isn't a league trophy but the honor of wearing the Maple Leaf on the world's biggest stage. Left out of the 4 Nations roster earlier this year, Montour is determined to fight his way into Team Canada's lineup for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano. Brandon Montour determined to earn spot alongside Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid on Team Canada The NHL season hasn't even begun, yet anticipation is already building around Olympic hockey. For Canadian players, the Games carry unmatched prestige. With a roster so stacked in every position, only the absolute elite secure their names on the team sheet. That reality fuels Montour's hunger. Canada has already announced its first six names: Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Sam Reinhart, and Brayden Point. It's a lineup that leaves little margin for others to break in, but Montour knows his window of opportunity lies in proving his worth on the ice. 'I felt like I had the opportunity of making the 4 Nations team; unfortunately, it was not to be,' Montour told 'At the same time, I think, for any hockey fan, it's cool to kind of see the high end, you know, elite of the elite playing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If Your Dog Does This, Here's What It Means Undo It gives you the kind of thirst to feel like you could be a part of that.' That hunger is more than talk. Despite Seattle's struggles last season, Montour showcased his consistency at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, tallying nine points. His performance didn't go unnoticed, earning him a call-up to Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp in Calgary this August. Brandon Montour's path to Milano 2026 At 31, Montour knows that opportunities to represent Canada at the Olympics don't come often. The blueline competition will be fierce, but he has shown both resilience and growth in recent years. 'It was nice to get that,' Montour admitted about the camp invite. 'I think I played well at the Worlds and, I mean, I think at this point people know what I bring. But to be recognized, it's very cool.' From the heartbreak of being left out to the thrill of a new chance, Montour's Olympic chase is a story of grit. If his form continues, the Panthers' Cup champion may yet skate alongside Crosby and McDavid under Canada's banner in Milano.
