Downpatrick murder inquiry may be linked to 'brutal' attack on priest

BBC News2 days ago
A 30-year-old man is still being held on suspicion of murder after a man's death in Downpatrick, that police said might be linked to a "brutal" attack on a priest in a church in the town.Officers went to a house in Marian Park at about 12:00 BST on Sunday after a report that a body had been found. Police suspect the case might be connected to an attack on a priest, Fr John Murray, in St Patrick's Church in the County Down town.He was hit on the head with a bottle while preparing to celebrate his last Mass before his retirement. Police said he remained in a serious condition in a Belfast hospital.
Police said a man walked into the church on St Patrick's Avenue at 10:10 BST on Sunday and hit the priest before leaving.Det Ch Insp McBurney said it "was a completely shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury".The priest was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.Hundreds of people attended a vigil in Downpatrick's St Brigid's Church on Sunday evening. Fr Martin Graham, who took the service, said it was about being with the parishioners and praying with them, for Fr Murray and also "for the other poor man who lost his life".He said Fr Murray had given the last 11 years of life to the parish and was due to retire on Thursday."He is so well thought of by the people here," he said. "It is just heartbreaking for them in what was supposed to be a poignant farewell this morning that it turned into something which was just grotesque."
Supt Norman Haslett said enquiries were at an early stage and at this time, they suspect the Marian Park incident "may be connected to a serious assault in the St Patrick's Avenue area of Downpatrick on Sunday".Speaking about the death in Marian Park, SDLP councillor Conor Galbraith said a family were now in mourning."It is really sad that this has resulted in two daughters left behind, grandchildren left behind," he added."And for what, we just don't know why."

Minnesota prosecutor seeks to overturn man's 1998 murder conviction after a witness confesses

A Minnesota prosecutor said Tuesday she will seek the release of a man imprisoned 27 years for murder after a key witness has recanted her testimony and told authorities she committed the crime. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said she supports the effort by attorneys for Bryan Hooper Sr. who are asking for a judge to vacate his conviction. At a press conference, Moriarty apologized to Hooper's adult daughter, Bri'ana Hooper, saying, 'I understand at the same time, 'sorry' doesn't bring back those 27 years. What we're doing today, though, I hope is the beginning of getting your father out of prison.' Moriarty was not with the office in 1998. Hooper now 54, was convicted by a jury at trial in 1998 of premeditated murder, felony murder while committing burglary and felony murder while committing kidnapping in connection with the death of Ann Prazniak, 77. He received three life sentences with the possibility of release after 30 years. He is in prison in Stillwater. The woman who prosecutors say has confessed is in prison in Georgia for an assault-related crime and will be released in about four years. Moriarty said attorneys will sort through the filing of charges against her after seeing which judge is assigned Hooper's case and trying to get him released as quickly as possible. Moriarty said the woman expects to be charged with murder and 'knows exactly what she's getting into here.' Police found Prazniak's body in April 1998 in a cardboard box wrapped with Christmas lights in a closet in her Minneapolis apartment — her ankles, nose, mouth, wrists and head bound and her body wrapped in garbage bags, blankets and bedding. Her cause of death was ruled asphyxiation, and she died two weeks to a month before police found her body, according to court documents. Moriarty said her office's Conviction Integrity Unit was reviewing Hooper's case when officials learned the state's star trial witness had come forward in late July on her own to recant her testimony against Hooper and to confess to killing Prazniak and concealing her body. Bri'ana Hooper, who has advocated for her father's release, lamented 27 years of missed birthdays, holidays, milestones and lost opportunities. 'But today we don't have to lose," she said. 'We have an opportunity to shed light and use my father's story to shed light on the other people who are sitting behind bars for crimes that they did not commit," she said. Her father has maintained his innocence. Attorneys for the Great North Innocence Project, representing Hooper, filed a petition to vacate his conviction. A judge would have 90 days to make a decision on that, Moriarty said. Project Legal Director Jim Mayer said, 'A strong criminal legal system is not one that insists on its own infallibility. A strong system is one that faces up to and confronts its failures, fixes its mistakes and works to repair the harm that's been caused. We are taking a small step down that road today, but let's acknowledge that we still have a long way to travel.' Jailhouse informants who implicated Hooper also recanted their testimony long ago, Moriarty said. In 2020, a judge granted Hooper's request to vacate two of three first-degree murder charges after he argued he was wrongly convicted and sentenced for three counts of first-degree murder against the same person. ___

Sad update after pregnant woman and her partner were found dead in Melbourne - the father-to-be's head severed and gruesomely mounted on a spike

Police have charged a man with a brutal double murder after a pregnant woman and her partner were found dead in Melbourne - the father-to-be's head severed and gruesomely mounted on a spike. Athena Georgopoulos, 39, was allegedly killed alongside her 50-year-old partner Andrew Gunn at their Mount Waverley home in Melbourne 's south-east just before 10pm on Monday night. Heavily armed police swarmed the Adrienne Crescent property at 9.55pm on Monday after a neighbour heard yells and called triple-0. Police allegedly discovered the man's mutilated body beside the dead a woman inside the unit in Melbourne's southeast but pair have yet to be formally identified. A 34-year-old homeless man with two large dogs was arrested shortly afterwards at nearby Westall train station about 1.40am on Tuesday, and he has since been charged with murder. The station is just 6km from the small unit. The man charged over the killings was allegedly known to the couple, and one of the victims lived in the small unit. Ms Georgopoulos, who was five months pregnant when she died. Sinister graffiti was also found scrawled outside the Mount Waverley unit where the couple were allegedly murdered, as homicide detectives scour the scene Their next of kin have been informed and post mortems will be held on Wednesday for the dead pair. They are still trying to establish a link with the man in custody. Detectives said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage, but said a weapon, although not a firearm, was used in the alleged murder. The street has been cordoned off by police as homicide detectives continue their investigation. Detectives are now probing if the graffiti outside - which includes 'U R Gay', 'Enough is Enough', 'Betrayal' and 'Karma' - is linked to the horrific scene found inside. The apparently threatening messages were daubed on the walls in luminous yellow-green and black spray paint, as well as on the property's fence. The motive for the alleged killings is unknown, but reports suggest drugs may have been a factor. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas from the Homicide Squad said police received several calls regarding the incident at the address prior to the grim discovery. 'Police were called at about 9.20pm in relation to a welfare check at the address based on some yelling that was heard from the property,' he said. 'A second call was then made that suggested it was perhaps more urgent than the first call and police arrived minutes later, and obviously they found the male and female inside the premises deceased.' Det Insp Thomas said heavily armed specialist officers, assisted by the police helicopter, tracked the arrested man to the station, where he was taken into custody. 'The person that we took into custody was in the company of two large dogs, I think that would look fairly obvious to people who may have been in the area,' he added Det Insp Thomas added forensic crews and investigators would be at the scene most of the day, and counselling was being offered to those living in neighbouring units. One neighbour said he did not know the people at the house and had never heard of any trouble or police attending the unit prior to last night. 'It's a quiet area,' the man said. A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed investigators were probing the graffiti. 'Police are aware of graffiti on the property in Mount Waverley where the bodies of two people were located last night,' the spokesperson said.
