UK Foreign Minister David Lammy faces hefty fine after fishing trip with JD Vance sparks outrage

Economic Times19 hours ago
Last week, UK Foreign Minister David Lammy went fishing with US Vice President JD Vance at Vance's private retreat in the English countryside. Lammy could face a £2,500 ($3,400) fine for fishing without a rod license, which is illegal in Britain.
On Wednesday, Lammy referred himself to the UK's environment watchdog, the Environment Agency, for this offense. A Foreign Office spokesperson said Lammy had an administrative oversight and hadn't acquired the right fishing licenses for the private lake at Chevening House, reported by CNN.
Lammy quickly bought the correct rod fishing licenses once he realized the mistake. He also wrote to the Environment Agency, explaining the error and how it was fixed, while thanking them for their work protecting Britain's fisheries. Lammy had hosted Vance at Chevening House, a 'grace-and-favor' retreat in Kent, known as the Garden of England, as per the reports.

After his official meetings, Vance stayed in the UK for a family vacation. Despite being critical of the UK government's approach to free speech, Vance and Lammy held a friendly press conference after their fishing trip, according to the report by CNN. Vance joked to reporters that all his kids caught fish, but Lammy did not. The caught fish were returned to the private lake, according to Britain's PA Media news agency. In England and Wales, anyone aged 13 or older must have a rod license to freshwater fish, as part of laws protecting fish stocks and promoting sustainable fishing, claims report.
Q1: Why is UK Foreign Minister David Lammy facing a fine?
Lammy could be fined £2,500 for fishing without a rod license at Chevening House with US Vice President JD Vance.
Q2: Did Lammy fix the fishing license mistake?
Yes, he bought the correct license and informed the Environment Agency about the error.

‘We never make any predictions': Russian foreign minister on Trump-Putin talks in Alaska

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has said that his country's position on Ukraine war is 'clear and unambiguous' and will be put forward at Friday's Summit talks between Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Sergei Lavrov was responding to a question by the Russian state TV after reaching Alaska for talks to potentially end the three-year war in Ukraine.(X) Lavrov was responding to a question by the Russian state TV after reaching Alaska for talks to potentially end the three-year war in Ukraine. He said that Moscow would not make guesses on the outcome of the meeting. "We never make any predictions ahead of time," Lavrov said, wearing what appeared to be a shirt with "USSR" written across it in Cyrillic script. According to Lavrov, the Russian position on the issue is clear, but he did not elaborate on what exactly it was. "... our position is clear and unambiguous. We will present it," he said. Trump and Putin are meeting in Alaska on Friday to hold the first-ever summit talks between the US and Russian Presidents since Moscow's war in Ukraine started. While the Republican leader has indicated a 'land swap' deal between Kyiv and Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who hasn't been invited to the talks, has ruled any such deal out. Zelensky, however, on Friday said that his country was 'counting on the US President' to convince Russia to end the war it began in 2022. Trump says Putin would have taken all of Ukraine if he wasn't President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that he would know within the first five minutes of the meeting with Vladimir Putin if it would be fruitful. 'We're gonna find out where everybody stands. And I'll know within the first two minutes, three minutes, four minutes or five minutes… whether or not we're going to have a good meeting or a bad. And if it's a bad meeting, it'll end very quickly. And if it's a good meeting, we're going to end up getting peace in the pretty near future,' CNN quoted Trump as saying. Trump has long claimed that Putin would not have launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 if he had been President, and said Thursday that the war 'should have never happened.' 'If I weren't President, in my opinion, he would much rather take over all of Ukraine. But I am President, and he's not going to mess around with me,' Trump said.

'Sick and warped': White House trashes latest Trump-Epstein gossip. It involves Princess Diana

Michael Wolff's latest Trump-Epstein gossip has Princess Diana at the center. Michael Wolff, the 'disgraced' biographer of President Donald Trump has now dropped a bombshell of a claim involving Trump, Jeffrey Epstein and Princess Diana. At 'Inside Trump's Head' podcast, Wolff said both Epstein and Trump attempted to woo the princess and there was a competition between the two over who could sleep with her. 'They had a competition, Trump and Epstein,' Wolff said. 'Of who would be the one, the first one to sleep with Princess Diana? ... They just understood, what could you get from these people? Both Trump and Epstein. What can you get from somebody, is the question you would always ask about anybody.' Michael Wolff routinely fabricates stories, responds White House White House communications director Steven Cheung called Michael Wolff a "lying sack of s**t" and a fraud who routinely fabricates stories. "He routinely fabricates stories originating from his sick and warped imagination, only possible because he has a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain," the White House said. Major row over Wolff's claim on Melania-Epstein Wolff has been at the center of the Epstein row as he claimed that Donald Trump met Melania through Epstein. "Well, I said go forward, you know, I've done pretty well on these lawsuits lately, and I said, go forward with it," Trump said. Hunter Biden escalated his row with Melania and said he won't apologize. "F**k that. That' not going to happen," Hunter said.

'Kya kehna chahte ho?': Shashi Tharoor stumped by over-the-top wordplay on X

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, known for his rich vocabulary and eloquent speeches, often leaves people reaching for a dictionary. But this time, the former diplomat found himself on the receiving end of a playful, tongue-twisting reply that momentarily left him at a loss for words. Shashi Tharoor was left amused after a viral X user replied with a baffling word salad, prompting him to ask in Hindi.(PTI) (Also read: Shashi Tharoor's pics with Indian-origin beauty queen, ex-First Lady of Panama get 1.5 million views) It began when Tharoor took to X to respond to remarks made by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who had described New Delhi as 'recalcitrant'. In his trademark style, Tharoor offered a sharp yet elegantly worded defence of India's position. "I hear some people are accusing India of being 'recalcitrant'. I say, far better to be recalcitrant than to be tractable, submissive or acquiescent to injustice," he wrote, earning admiration from many of his followers for the poised retort. The tables turn But the exchange took an unexpected twist when X user 'Sagarcasm', known for his satirical posts and creative humour, replied with an elaborate jumble of ornate words. 'That's fine Shashi but what about the abnegation of camaraderie in the egregious enfranchise that comes from the fatuous of the grandiloquent at the behest of impecunious and insidious semaphore?' he posted, leaving readers amused and slightly baffled. For once, Tharoor ditched his trademark verbal finesse and opted for an uncomplicated response in Hindi: "Bhai aap kya kehna chahte ho? (Brother, what are you trying to say?)." Check out the post here: The unexpected simplicity of his reply sparked laughter online, and the post quickly went viral, racking up more than 700,000 views. Users join in the fun Social media users were quick to join the banter. One amused commenter wrote, 'Never thought I'd see Tharoor at a loss for words.' Another remarked, 'This is the linguistic equivalent of meeting your match.' A third observed, 'Sagarcasm just played Tharoor in his own game and won.' Someone else quipped, 'Tharoor switching to Hindi means the opponent has truly overcomplicated it.' Another user added, 'This is peak X culture — from recalcitrant to semaphore in one thread.' Yet another laughed, 'I feel like I need a PhD in English to even attempt reading that reply.'
