Why Gen Z is quietly rejecting leadership roles? Experts suggest how companies can win them back

Time of India4 days ago
In today's multigenerational workforce, a surprising truth emerges: Gen Z isn't ignoring ambition—they're redefining it. According to a
Deloitte
repor cited by Inc., a mere 6 percent of Gen Z professionals aspire to climb to executive roles. For them, leadership often means burnout, bureaucracy and a loss of authenticity. But what if we saw it instead as a path to real impact?
Dr. Robert Coleman, Research Director at
Dale Carnegie
, believes the key is reframing leadership in terms that resonate. 'Gen Z is motivated by purpose, transparency and personal growth,' he explains. Organizations that link leadership to these core values—rather than to hierarchy—can shift perceptions and ignite enthusiasm.

Digital fluency is Gen Z's native language. Dale Carnegie's research shows 20 percent of Gen Z workers feel workplace technology boosts efficiency—double the rate of Gen X. Coleman urges companies to involve Gen Z in AI rollouts: 'When Gen Z feels like they're part of something transformative, they're more likely to stay engaged and see leadership as a natural next step.'

Elevate Soft Skills for Authentic Influence
Tech mastery alone doesn't prepare one for leadership. Coleman notes that while soft skills are in demand, they're often underdeveloped. 'Gen Z wants to feel heard and understood,' he says. Soft skills training built around empathy and connection can empower young professionals to lead in line with their values—showing that influence doesn't require sacrificing authenticity.
Watching leaders who work with transparency, balance and empathy gives Gen Z permission to step up. 'Leadership doesn't have to mean a corner office or 60‑hour workweeks,' emphasizes Coleman. By highlighting inclusive, value-driven models, companies encourage young employees to envision themselves not as reluctant foot soldiers—but as empowered change-makers.

Leadership That Lasts
The benefits of this shift are twofold: Gen Z gains meaningful growth, and organizations cultivate leadership styles designed for the modern workplace. As Coleman asserts, 'The goal isn't to force Gen Z into old molds. It's to co‑create new models of leadership that reflect the world they want to build.' The result? A workforce where purpose and performance grow in harmony—and trust becomes the cornerstone of collaboration.

ULBs begin house tax recovery drive

Lucknow: In a mammoth exercise, the urban local bodies across the state have started approaching property owners to recover pending house tax. Launched on July 15, the special drive will continue till July 31, and notices and bills will be served to the owners who are yet to pay their dues. In 17 key cities of UP that are managed by municipal corporations, more than 55 lakh properties will have to be covered. With a total of 762 urban local bodies, the major chunk of the revenue is generated through these 17 cities. It is estimated that the remaining 199 municipal councils and 545 town councils have an additional 30 lakh to 35 lakh properties. "But the contribution of the medium and small local bodies is insignificant at present. We are trying to provide them with the resources and skill set required to collect taxes from an increased number of localities. But it can only be done in areas where some facilities and amenities have been provided," said a senior officer. During the last financial year (April 1 to Sep 30 of 2024), ULBs across UP were able to collect Rs 1,401 crore, scoring 33% more money compared to the previous year. This time, the target has been set at Rs 1,862 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Director of urban local bodies Anuj Jha said: "Through regular monitoring and sustained efforts, we were able to achieve significantly higher revenue in the last financial year. Meanwhile, the concerned zonal officials, executive officials and tax assessors have been asked to organise camps to sort out the grievances of the residents who approach them. Post geographic information survey-based assessment, the house tax values of lakhs of properties were revised upwards in the 14 key cities, and many owners have sought explanations from the civic officials as a result.

UP to help farmers in storage, grading, processing, marketing of their produce

Lucknow: The state govt said on Friday that it has introduced the public-private partnership agricultural value chain development project which aims to create an integrated system that supports farmers beyond just crop production. Under this scheme, the govt will collaborate with private companies to improve crucial post-harvest processes such as storage, grading, processing, and marketing. By streamlining these steps, farmers are expected to receive better prices for their produce, reduce wastage, and gain access to larger markets. The Uttar Pradesh govt has partnered with Ninjacart, one of India's leading agri-tech companies, to promote maize farming in the state. As part of this agreement, Ninjacart will purchase 25,000 tonnes of maize every year from over 10,000 farmers across five districts. The maize will be supplied to ethanol manufacturing plants, contributing to India's green energy goals. For potato farming and processing, the govt has signed an agreement with Agristo Masa, a foreign company. This company will help farmers grow better-quality potatoes, support processing facilities, and assist in exporting the produce. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo This will open up new markets and income opportunities for farmers, especially in potato-growing districts. Chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh termed it a significant initiative to connect farmers with modern agriculture, better markets, and higher incomes. The project is expected to make Uttar Pradesh a leading state in agriculture and strengthen the rural economy. A state govt spokesperson said that the project will also involve working closely with Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and will actively include women farmers. They will be provided with high-quality seeds, modern farming equipment, digital platforms, crop insurance, and a transparent pricing system. To reduce post-harvest losses, the govt will develop cold storage, proper storage facilities, and grading systems, which will help extend the shelf life of produce and minimize waste.
