DA leader John Steenhuisen once again played his cards close to the chest when asked about his future as the DA leader, saying the 2026 local government elections would be 'a very good ending point' for a particular leadership career.
'I inherited a party in 2019 from a leader who had walked off the job, leaving the party at 16% in the polls, with many declaring it the death of the DA,' said Steenhuisen.
'We've been able to turn the party around. It's now a party in the national government. I'd like to continue, I'd like to finish what I've started.'
'I'd like to lead the party into the local government elections, and I think the DA's best days are still ahead of it. What it needs now is strong leadership at the centre.'
He made the comments during the DA's 25th birthday celebration in Hanover Park at the old-age cottages on Tuesday.
DA Western Cape chairperson JP Smith and Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis were among senior members joining the celebration.
Steenhuisen said he would make a formal announcement about his intentions later this year. The DA is set to host its Elective Congress in April 2026.
On the DA's future, Steenhuisen said: 'I think the country has been well served by having the DA around for 25 years, whether in opposition or now in government. It's a far cry from where we were in 2019. We've been able to rebuild, regain, and extend, and that must continue.

'All polling shows the DA is on the path to becoming the largest party in South Africa after the 2029 elections. I'm proud of what our team has achieved, and excited about the next 25 years.'
On the significance of the party's birthday, he announced a countrywide blanket drive for underprivileged communities.
'It is our way of saying thank you to the South Africans who've supported us, voted for us, and allowed us to be in a position where we can celebrate 25 years.
'We are doing this in a number of areas across the country. Hanover Park was prioritised because we know there are elderly people in this vicinity. We look forward to continuing the drive throughout June, where we will be visiting young people and more elderly residents.'

While the celebrations continued inside the old-age home, a handful of National Coloured Congress (NCC) members protested outside.
One of them said: 'The children who are being shot in Mitchells Plain, but the law enforcement is here to protect white people, but when our people call the law enforcement, they will not come to the coloured people.
'What about the coloureds who are killed? The mayor is here handing out blankets, but our girls have no sanitary pads. They stay out of school, but the mayor won't do anything; he is worried about the blankets.'
Responding to criticism from the NCC members, Steenhuisen said: 'You've got to be some kind of special failure to come and disrupt a birthday party where people are handing out blankets to underprivileged people. Unlike those who are screaming, the DA is doing something about it.
'Although policing is a national competence, the City of Cape Town has a gang unit and a drug unit, and it is taking the fight directly to the criminals. These areas have one of the worst police-to-population ratios in the world, and that is why at the national level, we're fighting for greater resources for the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Court dismisses prosecutions body's reconsideration request in unlawful detention case

The SCA dismissed the application for reconsideration brought by the NDPP who were aggrieved by costs they had to pay to the man who successfully petitioned the SCA in a case of unlawful detention as a result of mistaken identity. Image: Thobile Mathonsi/ Independent Newspapers The National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), in a second failed attempt at the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) could not show exceptional reasons to have the court reconsider a decision against costs awarded to a man detained unlawfully. The SCA dismissed the application for reconsideration brought by the NDPP, who were aggrieved by costs they had to pay to the man who successfully petitioned the SCA. In the matter, Khotso Ramabanta, instituted action against the NDPP and the Minister of Police for damages arising from his arrest on 27 February 2019 and subsequent detention until 20 March 2019, when the charges against him were eventually withdrawn by the prosecution. The SCA ordered that the Minister compensate Ramabanta R70,000 while the NDPP was ordered to compensate to the tune of R650,000. Video Player is loading. Ramabanta contended that the NDPP lacked reasonable and probable cause to prosecute. The NDPP expressed that the prompt withdrawal of charges upon production of Ramabanta's passport demonstrated prosecutorial diligence as opposed to malice. Furthermore, the NDPP challenged the full court's award of R650,000 in damages as grossly disproportionate to comparable cases, citing precedents where significantly lower amounts were awarded for similar or more egregious detentions. Ramabanta opposed the application for reconsideration and the court found that he argued correctly that the NDPP's mere dissatisfaction with the full court's decision or perceived prospects of success was insufficient Acting Judge of appeal, Daniel Dlodlo, said: 'The NDPP has failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances warranting reconsideration of the dismissal of the petition for special leave to appeal. Her arguments largely rehash the merits of the case and do not establish that the refusal of leave would result in a grave injustice or disrepute to the administration of justice. The full court's decision was neither irrational nor misdirected, and the damages award, while high, was not so disproportionate so as to justify intervention.'

MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela releases lab results amid drug use claims from Floyd Shivambu

MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela denies drug allegations with medical proof. Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspapers The uMkhonto weSizwe Party's national spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, has released medical test results which appear to confirm he is free from drugs and alcohol. This follows public allegations by former Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu that he was a user of the substances. Shivambu recently accused Ndhlela of being "a liar, takes drugs, and is always under the influence of alcohol." In response, Ndhlela has categorically denied the claims and refuted the claims by publishing drug and alcohol screening results on his official X account. The test results, issued by certified medical facility Lancet Laboratories, confirm he tested negative for the following substances: Alcohol, Cannabis (THC), Cocaine, Amphetamines (including methamphetamine), Opiates (including heroin, codeine, morphine), Benzodiazepines, Barbiturates, Methadone, Methaqualone and Phencyclidine (PCP). However, IOL reached out to Lancet Laboratories, who said that they could neither deny nor confirm the results. Meanwhile, Shivambu says thousands of people have applied to be volunteers in his National Consultation Team (NCT). "The people come from different political parties, the ANC, DA, EFF and a substantial number from MK Party. It is very senior leaders who occupy various position in government who have pledged solidarity," he told the SABC. Shivambu claimed that Jacob Zuma offered him the leadership position in the party, but he denied. "In the initial discussions when I joined there were discussions by President Zuma that I must be the President of the party which I rejected. I said that would be inappropriate because I had tremendous respect of his leadership." However, speaking to the national broadcaster, Ndhlela accused Shivambu of being arrogant. He dismissed Shivambu's claims of R7 million being siphoned from the party monthly. "Umkhonto WeSizwe is a strong party. It is the fastest growing political party in this country. We are bound to have alien tendencies that are not cultural to the party. This is the case with what we are finding ourselves in from now. He has never raised the issue of the R7 million within the party," Ndhlela claimed. Ndhlela has also formally demanded a public apology and retraction from Shivambu within 48 hours, threatening legal action if the demand is not met. "Our client, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, has been subjected to a vicious campaign of lies and character assassination," his lawyers said in a statement. The legal team outlined specific demands, including a public retraction on Shivambu's X account, pinned for seven days, and an unconditional apology. "Social media cannot be a lawless space where individuals are slandered without consequence. We are preparing to issue summons to identified perpetrators and will seek substantial damages." The lawyers also called on Shivambu to contact eNCA to broadcast a correction, with failure to comply risking further legal action. What Shivambu Holdings really intends with his political maneuvering

For Floyd Shivambu, resignation from uMKhoto weSizwe would be costly as it depreciates his brand equity, whereas martyrdom by excommunication appreciates it. Image: Timothy Bernard/ Independent Newspapers Siseko Maposa POLITICAL economists have long entangled themselves in a circular debate – whether politics shape markets or markets shape politics – as if parsing some grand cosmic chicken-and-egg dilemma. To me, this has always been a false binary. The interplay is self-evident: while reciprocal influence exists, history's unrelenting verdict is that material conditions shape everything, including politics and its actors. Which brings us to the spectacle of our moment. Floyd Shivambu has left many baffled following his recent press conference on June 19. What are we to make of a man who declares unwavering loyalty to a party while simultaneously plotting its potential replacement? A loyalist who now embarks on a national tour to gauge whether the movement he claims to cherish should be abandoned altogether. One who vows never to resign yet taunts the MK Party to expel him. Let me not even unpack the comments he made of the EFF's Julius Malema, and other insinuations that Duduzile Zuma is both chemically compromised and digitally unhinged. These seem bizarre but much of our confusion stems from a fundamental misapprehension: we keep expecting politicians to behave as anything other than market agents. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ To cut through the noise, we must reframe our lens entirely. Consider instead an analogy drawn from corporate theory – a framework both ruthlessly pragmatic and richly explanatory. Modern politics operates on two irreducible facts: - Politicians operate as Strategic Business Enterprises (SBE), each leveraging their unique competitive advantages – charisma, intellect, social capital, or regional appeal – to broker advantageous deals with political parties – I will get to what these are later. Like businesses, their influence varies: some remain small-scale operators, while others grow so dominant that their personal brand eclipses the very parties they align with (e.g., Jacob Zuma and MK Party). Note: The pursuit of profit remains an inherent imperative for SBE's. - Parties function like corporate conglomerates, some bigger than others, controlled by elite "shareholders" (discreet funders) who curate a portfolio of politicians (SBEs to maximise returns on their investment). A critical performance metric for these shareholders is electoral support, as it directly measures their capacity to influence state machinery in service of their interests. Standard corporate governance applies: Underperforming or disruptive assets – say, a Secretary-General or Party Leader – are swiftly replaced to protect shareholder interests. This model strips politics to its transactional core - where allegiance carries a price tag and influence obeys valuation. What is Shivambu's business plan? I do not think he is misspeaking, rather he is executing. His provocations to the MK Party are not the ramblings of a disgruntled operative, but a deliberate baiting for expulsion. Resignation would be costly (2nd from two different political parties in less than 12 months), as it depreciates his brand equity (that essential USP of credibility), whereas martyrdom by excommunication appreciates it.
