York councillor condemns ‘deeply worrying' incident that left man ‘shaken'
A York ward councillor has condemned a 'deeply worrying' incident which police said left a man 'shaken'. North Yorkshire Police said a cyclist was chased and shouted at by a group of around eight children at the Hob Moor nature reserve at 9.10pm on Friday, August 8. A force spokesperson said the group would not move to let the cyclist pass, and he 'nearly fell of his bike trying to swerve them'. 'The children then ran after the man shouting at him; the man continued to cycle home feeling shaken by the incident,' they added. Officers are now appealing for witnesses, urging anyone with information to contact North Yorkshire Police. Stephen Fenton, Dringhouses and Woodthorpe ward councillor, has urged the force to 'take action' in identifying those involved. He also called for increased police patrols in Hob Moor to avoid anything similar from happening again. "I regularly cycle across Hob Moor and it could just as easily have been me on the receiving end,' the Liberal Democrat councillor said. 'I contacted the police as soon as I was made aware of this incident to ask for an assurance that resources will be deployed to apprehend these youths before someone is seriously hurt. As yet, I have not received a response. "It's deeply worrying that these children thought it was OK to terrorise someone who was just on their way home. 'Do the parents know what their children are up to? If not, they need to be made aware. 'As and when the police identify the culprits, there need to be some frank conversations had with the families to make it clear that this behaviour is completely unacceptable.' 'We take your concerns seriously,' say police The North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said its officers 'work closely with communities and with partners and listen to what matters' to them. 'We take your concerns seriously and your reports help us to ensure that our patrols are intelligence led, ensuring we have the right resources in the right place, at the right time,' they said. 'ASB [anti-social behaviour] is unacceptable and can make people feel vulnerable in their own neighbourhoods. 'If you see anything of concern, let us know – together we can build stronger communities and safer streets.' They asked anyone in the area at the time of the incident in Hob Moor to phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Quote police reference 12250148532 when passing on information.

UTM Palapes cadet's death: Johor police await autopsy findings before wrapping probe
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 13 — Police are awaiting the chemistry department's report from Kota Tinggi Hospital on the autopsy findings in the death of a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers' Training Unit (Palapes) cadet on July 28. Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said the report, which takes about a month to complete, will determine the 22-year-old cadet's cause of death before investigators can finalise their papers. The newly appointed state police chief explained that the delay was due to several samples still undergoing analysis at the chemistry department. 'Investigators will then refer the matter to the state prosecution department for advice on certain requirements during the course of the investigation. 'The prosecution department will also determine if there are grounds to charge or if further investigation is still required,' he told reporters at the Johor police contingent headquarters today. Ab Rahaman said Bukit Aman's top leadership had instructed that the case be investigated thoroughly, given the public attention it had drawn. He expects the probe to be completed within a month before the investigation papers are forwarded to Bukit Aman and the state prosecution department for further action. So far, police have taken statements from 22 witnesses, including the doctor who conducted the initial examination, the pathologist who carried out the autopsy, as well as the victim's family members, trainers and friends involved in the training activity. Syamsul Haris Shamsudin died on July 28 at Kota Tinggi Hospital after completing his reserve officer cadet training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said an internal investigation by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) found no evidence of abuse or mistreatment during the training session. He said all witnesses, including officers and instructors, confirmed no abusive behaviour or misconduct occurred throughout the training. Yesterday, Syamsul Haris' mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, called for a second investigation and for her son's grave to be exhumed to determine the exact cause of death. The 45-year-old single mother said the application had been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) through the Higher Education Ministry to enable a transparent investigation.

Report: NFLPA puts in-house counsel Heather McPhee on paid leave
The NFL Players Association continues to generate headlines for less-than-ideal reasons. Via Don Van Natta Jr. and Jeff Passan of the NFLPA placed in-house counsel Heather McPhee on paid administrative leave on Tuesday, after (per the ESPN report) multiple employees filed complaints with the union's H.R. department about her. She allegedly failed to follow her supervisor's direction and allegedly bullied colleagues and disrupted the union's work environment, per the ESPN report. The NFLPA will need to have plenty of evidence and documentation to show this move isn't a pretext for retaliation. She was reportedly instrumental in the investigation arising from financial dealings by NFLPA officials with OneTeam Partners, and some believe she was otherwise sounding internal alarms about other irregularities. She reportedly retained a lawyer for a possible whistleblower claim against the union. Coincidentally, the lawyer she hired is the same lawyer who handled a whistleblower case against now-former executive director Lloyd Howell's previous employer, Booz Allen Hamilton. That case resulted in a $377 million settlement. On May 30, McPhee reportedly sent a memo to the NFLPA executive committee regarding the fact that she had been contacted by federal investigators exploring OneTeam Partners and the NFLPA. She reportedly wrote in the memo that she was ordered to stop working on anything related to the OneTeam Partners probe, 'with the threat of employment discipline.' She also urged the executive committee to meet on the matter. One of the complaints against her was filed by Matt Curtin, the head of NFL Players, Inc. and a member of the OneTeam board of directors. Hired by Howell, Curtin was a candidate for interim executive director, before the sudden resignation of NFLPA chief strategy officer JC Tretter. If/when she sues, the case will likely expose plenty of things that previously weren't known publicly. Which won't be good for the NFLPA. Still, someone apparently decided it's better to deal with the amorphous threat of future litigation over any potential disruption resulting from McPhee's ongoing presence in the workplace. Whether the disruption is good or bad depends on perspective. The NFLPA will likely paint her as a disgruntled employee who was trying to set the union up for a severance agreement, a settlement, or a verdict. She'll likely explain that, at a time of maximum chaos and misadventure by the union, she was trying to put the interests of the organization over the interests of specific individuals who, in her belief, were engaged in potentially inappropriate conduct. You know, like using union dues to finance multiple trips to a strip club. For more on the recent issues with the union, check out my initial visit to Pablo Torre Finds Out. And my second. And my third. And, as of this morning, my fourth. As someone texted tonight, "Cue episode five."
