Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss has named 10 potential debutants for Friday's clash against Tonga in Nuku'alofa.
The 26-member squad has a mix of seasoned Super Rugby players, standout Australian Under-20s players and high-performing club players.
The squad includes six uncapped players who featured for the Junior Wallabies at the recent World Rugby under-20s Championships in Italy, with veteran Fiji-born Seru Uru amongst the experienced hands named.
Friday's match at Te'ufaiva Stadium will be Tonga's only warm-up game before they face Samoa in their opening Pacific Nations Cup clash on 23 August.
Papua New Guinea will host the Pacific Bowl in this year's rugby league Pacific Championship series this October.
The Kumuls will meet the Fiji Bati and Cook Islands in Port Moresby in the men's competition.
NRL.com
reported the women's competition will feature PNG, Cook Islands and Tonga.
The Pacific Bowl tournaments will be played over three consecutive weekends at Santos Stadium, kicking off on 18 October.
The Pacific Cup competition, featuring Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand will be played in New Zealand and Australia.
Taranaki NPC winger Taniela Rakuro has extended his place at the Fijian Drua for another Super Rugby Pacific season.
The franchise said Rakuro, who made his debut in 2023, has signed a contract renewal for the 2026 competition.
The wing is currently with Taranaki in New Zealand's NPC, as an injury cover for Hurricanes winger Kini Naholo.
He scored five tries in their 97-nil victory over Thames Valley during a pre-season trial game.
Rakuro said he is grateful for the oppotunity to play Super Rugby again with the Drua in the new season.
Former double netball international, Kristiana Manu'a has announced her retirement from elite netball.
The New Zealand-born player of Samoan heritage played for the Australian Diamonds national team in 2016 and for Samoa's Tifa Moana in 2023, where she captained the team.
Her club Sunshine Coast Lightning says the player has had an illustrious 11-year career.
Manu'a, 30, has played 128 National League matches across the ANZ Championship, ANZ Premiership and Suncorp Super Netball in both New Zealand and Australia.
Tongan Tala women's netball team captain Hulita Veve is out of contract in Australia's Suncorp Super Netball competition, after the Queensland Firebirds announced she will not return to them in the new season.
Veve has been with the Firebirds from 2024, playing 32 games for the club.
She is one of three players that the club announced were not returning in 2026, the others being Tippah Dwan and Ashlee Barnett.
Veve has been Tongan netball team captain since 2022.
Fiji Bula Boys football coach Marika Rodu has named his 25-member extended squad for the King's Cup tournament in Thailand next month.
The squad will be trimmed to a final 21 players before the trip.
FBC
reported Rodu has named a number of young players, with a focus on the next FIFA World Cup qualification cycle.
The King's Cup will also feature host nation Thailand, Iraq, and Hong Kong.

Can the Pumas derail this All Black season before it even really starts?

Pumas v All Blacks Kick-off: 9:10am Sunday 17 August Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, Córdoba Live blog updates on RNZ Analysis - Just what's at stake this weekend in Córdoba? When this season's All Blacks draw came out, all attention focused on the monster test with the Springboks at Eden Park, as well as the Grand Slam tour at the end of the year. But the next two games are arguably just as huge. Scott Robertson's side faces a Pumas team that only has to look back 12 months for success and has a squad of players now used to beating the previously invincible All Blacks, plus is coming off a massive run of results since. "They create a lot, they're a team with a lot of experience. A lot of them play in Europe, they're well coached and play with passion," said Robertson this week. All Black Damian McKenzie in action against Argentina in the Rugby Championship match in Mendoza. Photo: gaspafotos / PhotoSport "They've got speed to finish, so they're threatening. It's test footy and among the top eight anyone can beat anyone on the night. You've got to be at your best in every game." Pretty standard stuff from the All Blacks, with all three players made available to media this week also noting the 'passion' the Argentineans will bring. Given that most of the Pumas players ply their trade in the Top 14, there admittedly isn't a lot to go on other than the times the All Blacks actually played against them - but that's something that will undoubtedly be sticking in their minds like a bad dream. "Over the last few years, they've challenged us, particularly in the first game. We've lost a couple of those, so the first 20 minutes can be important," said Will Jordan . Last year's shock 38-30 win by the Pumas in Wellington was notable for a couple of reasons, firstly because they rattled the All Blacks into one of the most embarrassing plays of their history when a regulation ruck on halfway ended up being fumbled all the way back to be forced dead over their own goal line. Secondly, it should've really been more and this was clearly on the mind of coach Felipe Contepomi post-match, who took every opportunity to reinforce that this was a Pumas side that is not only confident of beating the All Blacks, but now expects it. "It's how you win, sticking to your plan. That's what we're looking for and it wasn't the perfect game, there's lots of things to improve," he said after the win last year. However, some old habits die hard. The Pumas have never been able to strong two decent performances together against the All Blacks and last year was no exception, as they were flogged 41-10 the following week at Eden Park. Photo: Andres Larrovere / AFP) It is likely we will know just whether it will be a regulation All Black victory after that opening period Jordan mentioned. But it's almost certain that two losses in a row has the potential to throw this season into disarray for Robertson, whose side has otherwise been building nicely towards the Rugby Championship. But now the challenge for Contepomi's men is to get those results at home. History suggests Córdoba will be the best chance, given that all three of their victories have come in the first game of their Rugby Championship meetings, but history also implicitly states that Argentina is one place where the All Blacks may well be the most comfortable playing. Aside from one test in 2019 that finished 20-16, the average winning margin over the Pumas in Argentina has been very handy. Will this change due the fact that they now come in having fashioned a record only the Pumas can over the last year? Or will the weight of expectation once again crush their spirit?

Maddy Gordon to leave the Pulse and play in Australia

Pulse midcourter Maddy Gordon has signed to play for the Queensland Firebirds in next year's Super Netball competition. She joins team-mate Kelly Jackson who announced her move to the Kiri Wills-coached Firebirds earlier this week. Queensland are making the most of the recent loosening of Netball New Zealand's eligibility policy . On Monday both Gordon and Jackson were named in Dame Noeline Taurua's first Silver Ferns squad of the year . Gordon has been with the Pulse since 2018 and has 29 Test caps. "I just can't thank the Pulse region enough," she said in a statement. "I came down here here as a young 18-year-old and they put me in the Manawa. "They backed me, they gave me a chance and not many people get given a shot like that." During her time in the Pulse, Gordon won three ANZ Premiership titles (2019, 2020 and 2022) and was MVP of the Pulse's 2020 Grand Final win. Firebirds head coach Wills welcomed the arrival of Gordon, who is able to perform at either wing attack or centre. "Maddy possesses a fantastic engine and brings a mix of pace and skill which has been proven at the highest levels internationally," Wills said. "Whether it is feeding our attack or providing disruption and hunting in defence, Maddy will be a great addition to our team for the 2026 season."

Photo: Office of the Prime Minister, PNG A competition has been launched to name Papua New Guinea's new NRL team . The PNG team is set to join the NRL for the 2028 season. The Post-Courier reported Prime Minister James Marape saying the name should be driven by a motive that reflects national unity, positive growth, and a strong partnership with Australia. "In a land of a thousand tribes… this one team must resonate with one people, one nation, one country," he said at the competition launch. PNG NRL bid CEO Andrew Hill said the competition was about creating a team that every Papua New Guinean can call their own. "By inviting every Papua New Guinean to help us name our team, we are building something that truly belongs to its people," he said. The board for the franchise was named in June , and features Marcus Bai, who played for the Kumuls, Melbourne Storm and Leeds Rhinos; and Ray Dib, former chairman of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Submissions for the team name will be open to all Papua New Guineans until 31 August, after which a board-designated team will filter the names. The most popular suggestions will be put to a public online vote, with the final name requiring a majority vote to be selected. It is expected that the chosen name will be announced during Papua New Guinea's 50th independence anniversary celebrations.
