Status-quo: Chishti suffers Supreme Court reversal in battle for TRG Pakistan control
The SHC had issued a ruling on June 20, 2025 abating a $53 million tender by the company's largest shareholder Greentree Holdings, as well as annulling Greentree's shareholding and ordering elections.
Greentree subsequently appealed the ruling at the SCP, which has led to an interim order asking all parties to maintain status quo.
US arbitrator orders Zia Chishti to pay $9.1mn to TRG International
TRG Pakistan's share price reacted immediately to the posting of the order on the Supreme Court's website, jumping by 7% on hopes of a quick resumption of the tender, before reaching at a more modest gain of 1% as investors digested the news of a legal battle through the SCP.
Chishti had resigned from the company in late 2021 upon disclosure in US Congressional testimony of an arbitration award against him for sexual misconduct.
The company's current management has maintained that any association of Chishti with the company would be damaging to its assets and reputation.
At the same time, the company's Bermuda based affiliate TRG International has sought to remit to Pakistani shareholders the proceeds of sales of its stakes in its portfolio companies by way of share purchases by Greentree Holdings.
Zia Chishti, The Telegraph settle libel suit over reporting of ex-employee's 'grooming' allegations
Chishti had successfully challenged Greentree's remittance of funds and purchase of shares in the SHC, which has now been appealed in the SCP.
With Chishti's takeover efforts for TRG Pakistan now at least delayed by the Supreme Court appeal process, the impact on former TRG Pakistan CEO's financial liabilities is unclear as Chishti's path to accessing the significant liquidity at TRG International has narrowed.
With significant creditor liabilities ranging from the US tax authorities to bank defaults to arbitration fee awards, Chishti is estimated to owe over $30 million to various parties.

Intra-day update: rupee strong run continues against US dollar
The Pakistani rupee maintained its upward trajectory against the US dollar, appreciating 0.08% during the opening hours of trading in the inter-bank market on Thursday. At 10:30am, the currency was hovering at 282.72, a gain of Re0.23. On Wednesday, the currency settled at 282.95. Globally, the US dollar flirted with a two-month peak on Thursday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell stuck to his patient approach on rates in a closely watched policy decision and offered little insight on when they could be lowered. The greenback was also on track for its first monthly gain for the year, bolstered by a hawkish Fed and US economic resilience, with uncertainty over tariffs beginning to ease given recent trade deals struck by Washington. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was last steady at 99.77 , not far from a two-month peak of 99.987 it hit in the previous session. The dollar index was set for a monthly gain of more than 3%. US President Donald Trump's chaotic tariffs and fears of the dollar's demise earlier this year had undermined the currency and given it the worst start to the year since the floating exchange rate period. Those worries have since abated, giving the dollar new life. The latest push higher for the currency came on the back of the Fed's policy decision on Wednesday, after Powell reiterated it was still premature to ease rates. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, gained for a fourth straight day on Thursday, as investors worried about supply shortages amid US President Donald Trump's push for a swift resolution to the war in Ukraine and threats of tariffs on countries buying Russian oil. Brent crude futures for September delivery, which are set to expire on Thursday, rose 27 cents, or 0.4%, to $73.51 a barrel by 0028 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude for September gained 37 cents, or 0.5%, to $70.37 a barrel. Both benchmarks settled 1% higher on Wednesday. The more active Brent October contract was up 29 cents, or 0.4%, at $72.76. This is an intra-day update

Bullish momentum grips PSX as Pakistan, US strike strategic trade deal
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) saw bullish momentum during the early hours of trading on Thursday, as investors rejoiced after the US struck a trade deal with Pakistan. At 9:50am, the benchmark KSE-100 index was hovering at 139,657.99 level, an increase of 1,245.74 points or 0.90%. Across-the-board buying was observed in key sectors, including automobile, cement, commercial banks, fertilizer, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs, refinery and power generation. Index-heavy stocks including HUBCO, PSO, SNGPL, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL and SSGC traded in the green. Analysts attributed the buying spree to investor optimism after the US and Pakistan struck a deal that will result in lower tariffs for the South Asian nation, as well as an agreement in which Washington will help develop Islamabad's oil reserves. 'We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves,' US President Donald Trump wrote on social media on Wednesday. 'We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership.' Trump's social media post did not provide further details. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, in a video message on Thursday, termed the trade deal a 'win-win' situation for both countries. 'We are in a good place today in Pakistan, in terms of where we have arrived before August 1. We have come a long way in terms of our overall strategic partnership between Pakistan and the United States,' he said. Pakistan faced a potential 29% tariff on exports to the United States under tariffs announced by Washington in April on countries around the world. Tariffs were subsequently suspended for 90 days so negotiations could take place. US total goods trade with Pakistan was an estimated $7.3 billion in 2024, according to the website of the Office of the US Trade Representative, up from around $6.9 billion in 2023. The US goods trade deficit with Pakistan was $3 billion in 2024, a 5.2% increase over 2023. Internationally, Asian equities slipped on Thursday after weaker-than-expected Chinese activity data and a plunge in copper prices, while investors weighed a trade deal between South Korea and the US The dollar held near a two-month high as investors weighed a Federal Reserve decision to hold rates steady and strong earnings from megacap tech firms. Nasdaq futures surged 1.2% after better-than-expected earnings from Microsoft and Meta Platforms. S&P 500 futures advanced 0.8%, while the US dollar held steady after hitting a two-month high. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.7%, though still on track for its fourth consecutive monthly gain in July. This is an intra-day update

EVs: 2 German firms keen to train technicians in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Two German tech companies have expressed serious interest in providing technical training to Pakistani firms and developing electric vehicles (EVs)-related infrastructure in the country. The development came during a meeting on EVs chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan with a special focus on EV skills training. The meeting was attended by representatives from the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), two German companies namely, Lucas Nülle and the Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) along with the officials from the Engineering Development Board (EDB). The agenda focused on the urgent need to develop skilled technicians for the growing electric vehicle industry in Pakistan. Discussions were held on the current gap in skills required for EV maintenance and services, and how to address these challenges through international collaborations and structured training programmes. Lucas Nülle and IMI expressed keen interest in partnering with NAVTTC to provide technical training in Pakistan aligned with international best practices. SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasised that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif envisions the successful implementation of Pakistan's electric vehicle policy, which requires a strong foundation of skilled human resources. He added that once electric vehicles become in mainstream on Pakistani roads, there will be a substantial demand for professionals trained in EV maintenance and battery services. 'The development of a skilled workforce in this sector will create widespread employment opportunities and contribute significantly to the national economy.' The SAPM further highlighted that all training models should be designed according to international standards to ensure global competitiveness. He termed trained EV technicians as a national asset. To move forward, Haroon Akhtar Khan directed the EDB and the Ministry of Industries and Production to work in close coordination with NAVTTC and the German companies to formulate a comprehensive training and implementation proposal.
