Somerset and Warwickshire heading for draw on batting-friendly pitch
Warwickshire and Somerset are heading for a Rothesay County Championship draw at Edgbaston after the home side narrowly avoided the follow on on the third day, writes Brian Halford, ECB Reporters' Network.

In reply to 498, Warwickshire were bowled out for 351, achieving the 349 follow on figure with just two wickets to spare. Alex Davies hit 78 (186 balls), Sam Hain 78 (170) and Tom Latham 65 (158) but, on a very good batting pitch, nobody else reached 30 against a Somerset attack which kept the pressure high, led by skipper Craig Overton (four for 61).
Somerset closed the third day on 116 for three, 263 ahead overall, a commanding position but unlikely to be a winning one on a batter-friendly pitch which is not deteriorating.
Somerset's seamers opened up superbly after Warwickshire resumed on the third morning on 158 for one. Matt Henry bottled up fellow Kiwi Latham with a sequence of maidens before, still to add to his overnight score, Latham drove at one that nipped away and edged to wicketkeeper James Rew. Five overs, and just six runs, later, Davies perished when he edged Overton to slip where Tom Kohler-Cadmore took a fine catch, low to his right.
Jacob Bethell, promoted to four, batted solidly until the stroke of lunch when he bottom-edged a pull at Overton to Rew. The wicketkeeper collected again shortly after the interval when Ed Barnard edged an injudicious drive at Overton and self-flagellated all the way back to the pavilion.

As Warwickshire wobbled to 235 for five, Somerset had all the more reason to regret their recklessness with the bat on the second afternoon. A follow on figure of 550 would have put the home side under pressure but 349 was within reach albeit, it transpired, only just.

Kai Smith and an increasingly expansive Hain added 66, Hain passing 50 from 133 balls and celebrating with two straight sixes in an over from Jack Leach. Smith supplied Rew's fifth catch with a leg-side tickle off Overton and when, in the final over before tea, Hain edged Leach to slip, Warwickshire were still 32 short of the follow on figure with three wickets left.
Corey Rocchiccioli responded aggressively with 28 from 31 balls but pulled Migael Pretorius to long leg with ten still required. Tense moments followed for the home side until Ethan Bamber reverse-swept Leach for four to avert the follow on and pretty much sentence the match to a draw. Bamber and Che Simmons both soon fell playing the forward defensive, Simmons bowled by Archie Vaughan and Bamber lbw to Leach.
Somerset's second innings started with a couple of jolts when both openers fell in the first eight overs. Kohler-Cadmore lifted Bamber to mid off and Josh Davey's off-stump paid a high price for his decision to play back to Olly Hannon-Dalby.
Tom Lammonby and James Rew added 83 before the former (33, 46) lifted Rocchiccioli to mid-wicket to squander the opportunity of reaching a third century in successive championship innings tomorrow.

How to watch Crystal Palace vs Liverpool live: Community Shield stream, TV channel, team news, prediction
Crystal Palace and Liverpool meet at Wembley on Sunday in the FA Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser for the domestic season in England. FA Cup holders Palace will be eager to win even more silverware as Oliver Glasner's side have had a disrupted summer following their heroic defeat of Manchester City in the FA Cup final at the end of last season. Palace have been demoted from the UEFA Europa League to the Conference League due to rules regarding multi-club ownership but they've appealed that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and will find out the verdict soon. American billionaire Woody Johnson has agreed to buy the majority stake in the club from fellow American John Textor whose Eagles Football group are at the center of the dispute over Palace's demotion to the Conference League. On the pitch they've managed to keep hold of key players Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze for now. Liverpool continue to mourn the loss of Diogo Jota after his tragic death in a car accident in Spain over the summer. On the pitch, Arne Slot has added plenty of new players this summer with Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong all arriving to boost his squad. Luis Diaz has left and Darwin Nunez appears to be on the way out too to help offset some of the huge spending, while Alexander Isak is also a target for Liverpool. It's clear the Reds aim to make the most of their title win last season and are now focused on winning the Champions League, and everything else, too. For live updates and highlights throughout Crystal Palace vs Liverpool, check out PST's live blog coverage below. How to watch Crystal Palace vs Liverpool live, stream link and start time Kick off time: 10am ET Sunday (August 10)Venue: Wembley Stadium — LondonTV Channel/Streaming: ESPN+ Crystal Palace team news, focus Long-term absentees Chadi Riad and Cheick Doucoure remain out but Crystal Palace have a full squad to choose from aside from that. Oliver Glasner has called for some additions to be made but given the change in ownership dragging on and the uncertainty over which European competition they will play in, there hasn't been much movement in Palace's squad this summer. Eze, Guehi, Mateta, Henderson and Wharton are the spine of the team and that remains intact, while the likes of Munoz and Kamada will look to build on a superb end to last season. Liverpool team news, focus There are very few injury concerns for Liverpool as they lined up the quartet of Mohamed Salah, Wirtz, Ekitike and Cody Gakpo from the start against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday. Slot is trying to get the balance right so he can put as much attacking talent on the pitch as possible at the same time. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are struggling with injury, while Virgil van Dijk missed the games against Bilbao due to illness and goalkeeper Alisson returned to Brazil for private reasons. Crystal Palace vs Liverpool prediction This is always a funny game to predict but it feels like Liverpool will lay down a marker for the levels they're going to try and reach this season. Given the uncertain offseason Palace have had, they'll be competitive but it feels like they've stood still. Crystal Palace 1-3 Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold heaps praise on Sadio Mané
Trent Alexander-Arnold & Sadio Mané Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a striking tribute to Sadio Mané during the podcast hosted by Gary Neville. The English defender revealed that his former Liverpool teammate was the only player he had the privilege of playing alongside without ever having to face him as an opponent. The England international did not hide his admiration for Mané's exceptional qualities. He highlighted that the left winger, in his view, embodied the archetype of the perfect modern forward. Alexander-Arnold emphasized the remarkable technical versatility of his former Anfield training partner. The right-back's comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo underscores the level of excellence attributed to the Senegalese star. "He was a perfect forward. He had everything. He was an athlete. I would probably say he was similar to (Cristiano) Ronaldo. He was fast, powerful, could score with both feet. He was a constant threat to everyone," said Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Blackburn Rovers register transfer interest in ex-Birmingham City forward
Blackburn Rovers are interested in striking a deal for VFL Bochum winger Koji Miyoshi. The Lancashire Telegraph understands that, as first reported by Alan Nixon, the Japanese winger is on their list of targets as they look to bolster their wide options. Right-wing is now the priority position in the Blackburn Rovers squad after the signings of Lewis Miller and Axel Henriksson this week. They filled the vacancies at right-back and in attacking midfield. Roves want to add a right-winger before the transfer window shuts with Ryan Hedges their only senior option in that position. Tyrhys Dolan, Andi Weimann and Amario Cozier-Duberry were options there last season and have left the club. READ MORE: Miyoshi has tasted Championship football before and was very popular at Birmingham City. He departed after their relegation to League One and joined German side Bochum having registered six goals and seven assists in 2023/24. They were relegated to the last season and therefore, Miyoshi could be available. Any deal is likely to be the highest outlay of the summer for Rovers for the 28-year-old, who scored once in 15 appearances last term. As previously reported, there is money available to spend and Ismael said that the sale of Callum Brittain should give more 'freedom' in the transfer market too. Rovers have used up all of their ESC slots after the arrival of Henriksson but Miyoshi would qualify for a regular GBE work permit, providing a deal is struck before he plays for Bochum in the second tier of Germany. That was a similar story with Dion De Neve earlier this summer. Cover at centre-back also remains on the agenda for Rovers. Hayden Carter's injury and the need to manage Scott Wharton mean an additional signing in that position has been explored.
