‘Pakistan's moment in Washington'

This is apropos a letter to the Editor from this writer carried by the newspaper yesterday. I would like to add that the reasons for the US shift are not hard to discern. While India has long been touted as America's counterweight to China, its policy choices have frustrated Washington. New Delhi's unrelenting purchase of Russian oil—now exceeding 1.5 million barrels a day—and acquisition of Russian arms has provided Moscow with critical liquidity to sustain its war effort against Ukraine. Arms deals alone totaled over $5 billion in 2024, undermining Western sanctions. Trump and senior Republicans like Marco Rubio publicly criticized this stance, framing it as opportunism detrimental to US and NATO interests. In this context, Pakistan's alignment with US priorities, however cautious, has not gone unnoticed. On Palestine, Pakistan has walked a fine line. Publicly and diplomatically, Islamabad has been vociferous in condemning Israeli atrocities in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, echoing global outrage at what many now call a 'slaughterhouse.' Yet, unlike Iran or other Muslim-majority states, Pakistan has avoided providing material or military support to Palestinian resistance factions, preventing open friction with Washington or Tel Aviv. This careful positioning has kept Pakistan in the good books of the US administration while still satisfying domestic demands for moral solidarity with Palestine. Another critical factor shaping this newfound goodwill is Pakistan's willingness to open its mineral-rich landscape to US investment. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

JI Karachi links school dropouts to corruption in Sindh

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan has blamed widespread corruption and flawed government policies for keeping more than 7.8 million children out of school in Sindh alone, out of a total of 26 million nationwide. Speaking at a book and schoolbag distribution ceremony organized on Thursday by JI's New Karachi Town chapter, Monem Zafar Khan said the public education sector had once produced exceptional individuals such as the late nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. He lamented that the same institutions have now been devastated due to mismanagement and corrupt practices by successive governments and an incompetent administration. He pointed out that despite the Sindh government allocating over Rs613 billion for education, the sector continues to deteriorate. He said the public schooling system had been on a sharp decline for the last two decades, giving rise to an unchecked boom in private schools and creating a wider gap between social classes. Monem Zafar Khan also highlighted the role of vested interests and elite indifference in worsening the situation. He said that it was not just a matter of budget mismanagement, but also a deliberate neglect by those in power that has driven children away from educational institutions. He asserted that JI has remained committed to the cause of education. Despite limited resources, the party had successfully restored over 45 public schools in nine towns of Karachi during the past two years. He announced JI's next target is to upgrade all public schools in these areas and improve student enrolment while also encouraging youth participation in sports for better physical and mental health. The JI leader also participated in the party's 'Make Karachi Green' drive by planting a tree during the event. Reflecting on the significance of the month of August, he called on the nation to honour Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's vision by striving for a future where every child has access to quality and uniform education. He reiterated that education remains the only sustainable path to national progress and revival. New Karachi Town Chairman Muhammad Yousuf and JI leader Tariq Mujtiba also addressed the ceremony. Trade agreement with US: Pakistan govt says secured lowest tariff rate in South Asia

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani said Pakistan has secured the lowest tariff rate in South Asia—19 per cent—following a trade agreement with the United States, a move expected to boost exports. The minister, Thursday, told the National Assembly during question hour that the 19 per cent tariff rate offered to Pakistan is the lowest in the South Asian region. He said that bilateral relations with the United States (US) have strengthened as a result of government's efforts. He highlighted that 'the agreement comes at a time when many had not anticipated such progress in Pakistan-US relations.' US cuts Pakistan tariff to 19% from 29% after trade deal 'At a time when cipher conspiracies were being floated, no one expected a deal like this with the US. Even the opposition will have to acknowledge that despite numerous challenges, our trade ties with the US have improved,' he remarked. He accused the opposition of hoping for deteriorating ties with Washington and pushing the country towards default. However, he credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's efforts for steering diplomatic relations in a positive direction. He also pointed to the high-level engagements that contributed to the breakthrough, including a meeting between Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and US President Donald Trump, as well as discussions held by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar with senior American officials. He said 'this trade deal is the outcome of coordinated efforts by key government leaders.' He noted that the government was working to lower energy tariffs, with a new energy policy on the horizon. 'We hope that the government's initiatives will lead to a reduction in production costs and make Pakistani exports more competitive,' he added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
