Matthew Hayden backs India for Test Series win, says 'I don't think England bowlers are that good'
India is set to play a five-match Test series in England starting on June 20. Ahead of the tour, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has expressed his support for the young Indian squad. Despite experts favouring the hosts, according to Hayden, Shubman Gill-led team can prove the doubters wrong.
After the retirement of players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, India's Test team is in a rebuilding phase. The absence of experienced pacer Mohammed Shami due to fitness issues further complicates the situation.
The 18-man squad, captained by 25-year-old Shubman Gill, is relatively inexperienced, raising concerns about their ability to compete in England's tough conditions. However, Hayden remains optimistic about their potential.
Matthew Hayden downplayed the strength of England's bowling attack, citing their own challenges with injuries and retirements.
"I don't think England bowlers are that good, they have got a number of injuries and a number of retirees as well, that will be the challenge," Hayden opined while speaking on JioHotstar.
"The northern Test matches when it's zipping around that will be key, win that one and it could well be a series that goes India's way," he added.
He also emphasized that India could take advantage of tough venues like Leeds and Manchester, where conditions favour swing and seam.
England's bowling unit is indeed depleted for the series opener at Headingley, Leeds.
Key pacers Mark Wood, Jofra Archer, and Gus Atkinson have been ruled out of the first Test due to injuries.
Wood is recovering from knee surgery and may miss the first three matches. Archer, on the other hand, is nursing a thumb injury and could return for the second Test. Atkinson's hamstring issue leaves his availability uncertain.
England's pace attack for the first Test includes Josh Tongue, Sam Cook, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Jamie Overton. Shoaib Bashir is the only specialist spinner, with part-time options in Joe Root and Jacob Bethell.

Japanese sportswear giant ASICS will ramp up India manufacturing to 40% from 30% over the next few years to ensure steady supply, a top executive told Reuters, as the country's regulations force global brands to pause imports of footwear. The Indian government has mandated certain standards for various footwear segments, requiring both domestic and foreign manufacturers to obtain quality certifications. ASICS, which has also paused imports, said bringing in footwear from any country is not feasible without government certification. "To address this critical situation, we are strategically developing local production capabilities," ASICS India Managing Director Rajat Khurana said. For financial year 2024-25, ASICS reached 30% local production, a government-mandated threshold that allows foreign brands to operate their own single-brand stores in India. The firm, which operates roughly 125 stores through franchise partners, plans to open its first brand-owned store this year and is scouting locations in and around Delhi and Mumbai , Khurana said. It aims to set up a couple more over the next few years. ASICS, which competes with global rivals including Nike, Adidas , and Skechers USA in India, also plans to open three new franchise stores per month between now and the end of the year. For 2024-25, ASICS projected revenue growth of 35%-37% in India, following a 26% jump in the previous fiscal year that lifted its revenue to 4.28 billion rupees ($49.7 million). The local sporting goods and apparel category is expected to double to $58 billion by 2030 from 2023 levels, according to a 2024 report by consultancy firm Deloitte. Known for its running shoes, ASICS is benefiting from a growing fitness culture in India and rising interest in tennis and pickleball among affluent urban consumers.

George Russell said he was driving better than ever and ready to fight for a Formula One championship with Mercedes after taking the team's first win of the season in Canada, but this year still looks like a long shot. The Briton, out of contract at the end of 2025 but confident of staying, recognised any title chance this season would probably require the McLaren drivers to make mistakes and drop points. McLaren's Lando Norris and championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri collided in Montreal, with the former retiring from the race while the Australian moved 22 points clear after 10 of 24 rounds. Russell is fourth overall but still a mighty 62 points behind Piastri, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen is third. 'I don't really know how Max and I are so close to those two (McLaren drivers) because they clearly have the most dominant car,' said Russell. 'I think the two of us have been very consistent and getting the maximum result from our packages week in, week out. But I can't imagine them to continue throwing away points in the manner they're doing. 'Of course, we hope that continues to be the case, but I don't foresee us getting in the championship fight through pure pace as Lando did last year. We'll only be there if results like today continue or things like today continue to happen.'
