Motherwell star wants solid end to the season as he eyes new contract
Canadian international Harry Paton hopes to extend his stay at Fir Park
Motherwell winger Harry Paton hopes to impress in the last four games of the season, earn a new deal at Fir Park and get a solid pre-season behind him to kick-start into the new campaign.
In the meantime, the Canadian international hopes to help Motherwell finish seventh in the Premiership, top of the bottom six, with a win at Dundee on Saturday.
That would put the Steelmen eight points clear of their hosts with nine to play for, all-but keeping them in the division for next season.
When asked if Motherwell can finish seventh, Paton said: 'Yeah, definitely. I think with the way the manager has come in and kind of getting the points that he's wanting us to do, you can see there's improvements there. I definitely think so.
'Looking forward to next season, being in the best position we can be at the moment would really benefit the team for next year, that would be great.
'I think, looking back, it was really unfortunate [not to be in the top six]. We put it on the line for the last game, it was kind of our of our hands, but we did everything we could to get to that top six.
'Our goal now is to be top of that pile, and just finish the season really strong.'
Paton has targeted a place in Canada's squad for the home World Cup next year and hopes he can get there while plying his trade in Lanarkshire.
When asked about his contract situation, Paton said: 'I'm up at the end of the year. There's an option there.
'I just want to focus on the rest of the season and finish on a strong note.
'It's a little bit out of my hands, but I'm hoping to keep doing my thing, and hopefully see what happens.
'But I've really enjoyed my time here, and I would love to extend it, 100 per cent.
'You can see the aspirations oft he new management team coming in, how close we were to the top six this year, and definitely the goals will be increasing next year, and from a personal note, I've really enjoyed it, the league really suits my style.
'Also, tying in with Canada, that's a big aspiration for myself next year with the home World Cup in Canada.
'That's a goal I want to achieve, and definitely if I'm here, I can definitely have a good shot at getting in there.
'That's a long way, obviously. I have to do a lot of grafting, get my head down and keep working hard, but [being at Motherwell] would give me a good opportunity, I think.
'That's what my goal is going to be for next year.'
Paton has been blighted with injuries in each of the last two seasons, and last year had a chance of getting into the Canada squad for the Copa America.
He said: 'I think it was the end of last season, just before the Copa America, I just got a really bad injury and then started off the season really well with the cup and was really looking forward to the season.
'My ankle needed surgery, so it has kind of been a hampered season for me.
'But, looking back, I've played quite a few games this year and if I can finish off and get a good run of games, really get me into my form, I think I could end on a positive.
'Pre-season is huge, yeah. And I'm actually interested to see where the management team will bring in for pre-season. It's going to be different. Maybe we'll go away somewhere, and it'll be interesting to see the kind of runs he has planned for us.'

The happy couple celebrated their wedding day by sharing a series of photos and videos from the joyful occasion. The Israeli couple have been together since 2018 and were all smiles as they made their vows before throwing an amazing party with friends and family. However, SunSport understands the newlyweds remain stranded in Israel. Flights out of the danger zone have been blocked with the military shutting down the airspace until June 30 as attacks continue into a fourth day since Israel launched the bombardment of Iran on Friday. On Sunday, an Israeli strike killed the chief of Iran's armed forces intelligence unit. Iran state 224 people have been killed in attacks since Friday while 24 people have lost their lives in Israel. The British Foreign Office has put Israel on the 'red list', advising against all travel. The scary incident comes three years after Solomon and political science student Voshina had to be evacuated out of Ukraine by the Israeli government. Gerwyn Price spots real reason 'rubbish' Luke Littler and Luke Humphries were humiliated
Gerwyn Price spots real reason 'rubbish' Luke Littler and Luke Humphries were humiliated The Welshman reached the final with Jonny Clayton after 'rubbish' England were knocked out in the first knockout round Price branded England's performance at the World Cup of Darts as 'rubbish' Wales' Gerwyn Price has given his take on why England's Luke Littler and Luke Humphries were humiliated in the first knockout round at the World Cup of Darts despite being the overwhelming pre-tournament favourites. Alongside teammate Jonny Clayton, Price helped to take Wales all the way to the final in Frankfurt, with the duo easing past the Phillipines, Hong Kong and the Netherlands before meeting Northern Ireland in Sunday night's final showdown. However, it wasn't to be as the Northern Irish team of Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock came out on top 10-9 to win the tournament for the first time. But while Price and Clayton could be proud of their performance, which saw them come painfully close to winning a third World Cup title, the same cannot be said for Littler and Humphries. While they are the world's top two players, they were well beaten by hosts Germany in the tournament's second round on Saturday, with the partnership of Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko producing an inspired display to claim a sensational 8-4 victory. It was the first time that Littler and Humphries had partnered each other in the tournament, with the former making his debut and the latter appearing for a second time after playing alongside Michael Smith last year. While the two English players are good friends away from the oche, Price says that the duo - who both received MBEs in the King's Birthday Honours - "didn't show a team ethic" in the lead up to their defeat to Germany. Article continues below "I think you need to have a connection," said the 40-year-old former world champion. "You need to have that camaraderie off the stage and connection because when we all turned on the first day - and I'm not just saying this because they lost - but the only two players that didn't turn up together, didn't sit together, didn't play as a team "I'm not saying who they are but they didn't win their first game." Branding Littler and Humphries' performance as "rubbish", 'The Iceman' added: "You need to turn up together, you need to be as a team. "You turn up as a team, you practice together, you sit together. It's a team ethic and it didn't show with England. "It showed on the board. They're great players individually but you need to be as a team. Article continues below "I wanted them to do well, but they didn't," Price continued. "I'm not just saying that! I wanted them to do well, but they were rubbish." After beating England, world number 18 Schindler told Sky Sports that he was right to think that their opponents were "beatable" as he and Pietreczko "believed in ourselves". He added: "We have been putting in a solid performance, and obviously the double 16s from Ricardo just went in, so we are very happy to go through."

But as well as several superstar signings, Fergie was also responsible for a few spectacular flops. And the now-83-year-old revealed that two-time Champions League winner Owen Hargreaves fell into the 'underwhelming' category. Fans will also remember him scoring a penalty against Chelsea in the European final in Moscow, but Ferguson doesn't recall his time so fondly. Owen had no confidence in himself whatsoever. "He didn't show nearly enough determination to overcome his physical difficulties, for my liking. "I saw him opt for the easy choice too often in terms of training. He was one of the most disappointing signings of my career." It turned out to be a disaster. Sir Alex Ferguson Things quickly went downhill in 2008, with a recurring patellar tendinitis problem virtually ending Hargreaves' career. He would make just five more appearances for United after his debut season, before joining Manchester City for one, injury-ravaged campaign in 2011. Hargreaves, who won four Bundesliga titles in 218 games for Bayern Munich, scored just two goals in 38 appearances for the Red Devils. The former midfielder now works as a pundit to TNT Sports.
