7 NPA rebels killed in Masbate clash; AFP reports over 1,000 neutralized in 2025
The firefight, which lasted about 30 minutes, was carried out by the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army under Joint Task Force Bicolandia, operating within the 9th Infantry Division. High-powered firearms were recovered at the encounter site.
According to the AFP, the operation is part of its ongoing, intelligence-driven campaign to suppress insurgent activities in the Bicol Region.
'This tactical victory significantly weakens the CPP-NPA-NDF in Bicol, as the AFP continues to push for peaceful surrender and reintegration through the E-CLIP program,' the military said in its weekly briefing.
The clash in Masbate marks one of the latest actions in the AFP's intensified counterinsurgency efforts. From January 1 to July 24, 2025, the military has recorded the neutralization of 1,005 CTG members and supporters across the country.
Breakdown of the figures includes:
867 who surrendered,
71 apprehended, and
67 killed in armed engagements
Additionally, 540 firearms and 302 anti-personnel mines were recovered or surrendered, while 96 encampments were taken over by government forces.
The AFP also reported progress in its campaign against Local Terrorist Groups (LTGs). Since January, 128 LTG members and supporters have been neutralized — 114 surrendered, four were arrested, and ten were killed. Troops also recovered 142 firearms, five anti-personnel mines, and seized five encampments from LTG elements.
The military reiterated its call for remaining armed groups to return to the fold of the law and avail of the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which provides assistance for those willing to reintegrate into mainstream society. — Sherylin Untalan/BAP, GMA Integrated News

China on PH-India WPS drills: Third party may not interfere in disputes
Philippine and Indian navies steam in formation across the West Philippine Sea, as an Indian naval helicopter soars above, demonstrating coordinated maritime power during the bilateral maritime cooperative activity (MCA). The MCA was conducted on August 3 to 4, 2025. Photo by: PFC Carmelotes PN(M) / PAOAFP The Chinese government has rebuked the first joint drills of the Philippine and Indian navies in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), saying that no third party should meddle in territorial and maritime rights issues in the contested waters. In a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "Disputes over territory and maritime rights and interests should be settled through negotiation and consultation by countries directly concerned, and no third party is in any position to interfere in that." The Philippine and Indian navies from Sunday to Monday conducted a bilateral maritime cooperative activity (MCA) in the WPS to enhance their tactical coordination and joint maritime capability. "First time in history, na nagkaroon tayo ng joint sail with the Indian Navy. We are hoping na magtuloy-tuloy ito, so that, mas madami pa tayong gagawing mga exercises and activities with the Indian Armed Forces," Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. earlier said. (For the first time in history, the Philippines had a joint sail with the Indian Navy. We are hoping that we would have more of these, so that we would have more exercises and activities with the Indian Armed Forces in the future.) Troops from the two countries joined rendezvous operations, communication checks, air defense exercises, and maneuvering drills with photo exercise (PHOTOEX). Aside from these, they also participated in more complex warfare simulations such as screening exercise (SCREENEX), over-the-horizon targeting (OTH-T), naval surface interdiction and clearance (NSIC) integrated with a publication exercise (PUBEX), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise, replenishment at sea (RAS), passing exercise, and steaming fast (PASSEX/STEAMFAST). The AFP said the first bilateral MCA between the Philippines and India underscores the two countries' readiness to work together in promoting maritime domain awareness and supporting a peaceful, stable, and secure region. GMA News Online has requested comment from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) regarding Beijing's statements, but it has yet to respond as of posting time. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. is currently on a five-day state visit to India. Ahead of his visit, the DFA said the Philippines was looking forward to expanding maritime cooperation with India. Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim. The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago including Luzon Sea and the waters around, within and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis." China has refused to recognize the decision. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Philippine, Indian navies begin first joint South China Sea patrols
File photo shows Rear Admiral Shusheel Menon, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy, welcoming AFP chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. aboard INS Shakti during its Manila port call on July 31, 2025. Courtesy: Armed Forces of the Philippines Indian Navy warships have begun patrolling areas of the disputed South China Sea with their Philippine counterparts for the first time, Manila's military said Monday, as President Ferdinand Marcos departed for a state visit to New Delhi. The two-day sail includes three Indian vessels and started Sunday, a day before Marcos left on a trip that will include talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Philippines has heightened defense cooperation with a range of allies over the past year after a series of clashes in the South China Sea. Beijing claims nearly the entirety of the waterway despite an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis. India's naval vessels, including the guided missile destroyer INS Delhi, arrived in Manila for a port visit late last week. The patrol "started yesterday afternoon, then it's ongoing up to this moment... the activity at the moment is replenishment at sea," Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Salgado told AFP. While in India, Marcos is expected to sign pacts in such fields as law, culture and technology, according to Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq, but all eyes will be on any potential defense agreements. Before departing Monday, Marcos praised the two countries' "steadfastness in upholding international maritime law, including the UNCLOS", the UN treaty granting an exclusive economic zone within 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) of a country's shores. The Philippines has previously purchased BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India, a weapon which has a top speed of 3,450 kilometers (2,140 miles) per hour. India, which has engaged in border clashes with China in the Himalayas, is a member of the so-called Quad, a group that includes fellow democracies the United States, Japan and Australia. Beijing has repeatedly alleged that the four-way partnership, first conceived by late Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, was created as a way of containing China. — Agence France-Presse
