As we revealed, the newly-promoted Premier League club just hired keeper coach Neil Cutler.
And he is a big fan of experienced, four-cap England man Johnstone, 32.
Cutler worked with Johnstone at Aston Villa and Wolves and wants to reunite at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland have looked at expensive keepers in Europe but may look at a relative domestic bargain in Johnstone.
The move could happen as a loan because the star still has a contract at Wanderers for three years.
Manchester United academy graduate Johnstone joined them in a £10million deal from Crystal Palace last summer.
Johnstone played 10 times for the Molineux Stadium outfit last season, including seven times in the league.
He failed to keep a single clean sheet in those matches, conceding 17 goals.
The FA Cup was more fruitful for him.
He kept one clean sheet in three games as Wolves beat Bristol City and Blackburn before crashing out in round five on penalties to Bournemouth.
Johnstone was last involved for the Three Lions in March 2024.
Although his last game was a 1-0 win over Australia in October 2023.

AFL fans were left stunned by Fremantle star Andrew Brayshaw after he delivered a post-match interview while blood streamed from a head wound he sustained during his side's comeback victory. The Dockers trailed Hawthorn by 13 points at the final change of Saturday night's match, but kicked four goals to nil in the last quarter to seal the 12.5 (77) to 9.10 (64) win in front of 49,460 fans. One of those sides builds out from the back and neatly goes all the way to score at the other end. 'You look like a team,' Martin shouts at them, clearly pleased. 'When you move like that you look like a team.' He talks to them all a lot. Swears a lot too. Those who have been around the club for a while say he is more vocal during training than recent predecessors. These are players and a management team still sussing each other out. He tells them the sort of possession he wants from his defenders at the back: 'Not side to side, f***ing passive.'
